2016 OVERVIEW

Dear Parents,

Our school community has come alive with the

sounds of shared laughter, heart melting smiles,

and positive expectations. Your children create a

delightful joy.

All staff at SCBC are directly creating a thriving

Christian community that inspires learning, as a

means of transforming and empowering lives.

Underpinning every important decision we make

at SCBC is the question: “Will this activity or event

prosper our vision?”

Our mission is driven from our love for God.

SCBC’s educational direction and guidance

draws upon international best practice in both

school effectiveness and

school improvement. We are both guided by

research, and maintain an active appetite to

explore innovative ideas that could value-add to

our student’s educational success.

You can expect from us:

High Expectations – for all of our students,

especially your son/daughter.

Explicit teaching – your teachers design and

deliver lessons that are intentionally pinpoint with

both understandings and information. This

includes play-based learning in early years

education.

Effective Feedback – your children can expect

feedback that directly relates to actual

achievement.

Data informs practice – we are using data about

your son/daughter’s achievements to strengthen

the likelihood of his/her success. It’s a bad plan

that admits no modification (Publilius Syrus).

Classroom Management – you can expect your

teachers to major on the basics; being clear

about learning objectives, clarifying what success

‘looks like’ for each lesson and learning

experience, then attentively evaluating what they

have understood.

Wellbeing – wellbeing is directly linked to

achievement. Wellbeing is optimal health;

spiritual, mental, emotional, social, and physical.

We make decisions to inside the classroom and

outside the classroom to help facilitate optimal

health for individuals and groups of students.

Collaboration – We are preparing your children to

be part of the global community. Robots are

good at automation. Humans are experts in being

innovative and enterprising. We are educating

your children to gain satisfaction from working to

their strengths. Having emotional intelligence to

collaborate is essential and a high priority in all

activities at SCBC.

The Bible reminds us to: ‘Never be lacking in zeal,

but keep spiritual fervour [great warmth and

earnestness], serving the Lord.’ (Romans 12:11)

We love seeing your children flourish.

Curriculum – Kindergarten and Pre-Primary

At South Coast Baptist College we understand that Kindergarten and Pre-Primary education is

important to both brain development and creating dispositions which support a child’s lifelong

love of learning. We believe in taking a holistic view of education catering for the physical,

intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual domains. Due to the importance of this early exposure

to school life, we cater for these groups through carefully planned and intentional play. Our

teachers are employed on their qualifications, experience and competence with this age group.

The curriculum in Kindergarten is based around the Early Years Learning Framework. This provides

opportunity for child-centred investigation, exploration and expression of ideas. Pre-Primary is the

foundational year for the National Curriculum. Our programming and reporting in Pre-Primary

align directly to the teaching of required curriculum. Our facilities are designed to give students

a physical environment that is engaging, spacious and functional. Facilities include large

purpose-built classrooms, a kitchen, a central learning area and an expansive, fully fenced

outdoor play area.

Pre-Primary students receive interim and end of semester reports on their progress throughout the

year. Students attend Kindergarten for five full days per fortnight whilst Pre-Primary students

attend school full time.

Curriculum - Primary

Primary school at South Coast Baptist College begins with Kindergarten and goes through to year

6 with currently over 520 students in the primary school.

The Early Learning Years (Kindy to Year 2) is a sub area within the Primary school and focuses on

the Early Years Learning Framework. Primary schooling is an integral part of a child’s development

and at SCBC we focus on the development of the whole child, including education, social,

emotional and personal through various intentional and well run programs.

Academically, a strong focus placed on numeracy and literacy skills. Programs in Literacy,

Numeracy and all other curriculum areas are sequenced to ensure effective transition between

year groups. Each teacher provides differentiation within the classroom and IEP’s (Individual

education Plans) where required so that each student can reach their God given potential. A

very strong and individualised Learning Support Program is provided for students who require

additional academic support.

The West Australian Curriculum is fully implemented across the Primary School (Pre-Primary to Year

6) and classroom lessons, resources and reporting in the Primary School aligns directly to the

achievement standards expected for each year level. Technology is widely incorporated into all

Primary classrooms. Wireless internet, interactive whiteboards, laptops and iPad are utilized by

teachers and students to enhance the education process. Students also attend Digital

Technology lessons with a specialist teacher and have an additional 2 lessons in one of the 2

primary computer labs each week to work within the Numeracy Program ‘Mathletics’ that is

utilised from years 1 to 6. Students also attend a variety of additional specialist lessons including

Art, Physical Education, Sport Music and LOTE (Mandarin).

Our highly popular co-curricular programs afford students opportunity to develop their own

interests in areas such as gymnastics soccer, basketball, netball, junior choir and chess.

Special events across the Primary school include various excursions, swimming lessons,

Presentation Nights, Academic Achievement Awards, year 6 Graduation, Mother and Father’s

day, Year 4 Entrepreneurs Day, Book Week with a character dress up day, the Year 5 sleepover

including 2 days of exciting activities and the Year 6 Camp featuring an itinerary of outdoor

adventures.
