1. INTRODUCTION – ORGANISATIONAL HISTORY Centre for Disabled Children Assistance (CDCA) is a non profitable organization working in disability especially in children with physical disabilities (CwDs), health, sanitation & hygiene and women empowerment areas. CDCA is founded by a group of nine people with the aim of advancing the lives of CwDs those from the remotest part of the Himalayan region of Nepal. It is officially registered in District Administration Office (DAO) of Kathmandu in 2006 with the registration number-861. And, is affiliated with Social Welfare Council (SWC) in 2011 (affiliation number-20,726). Mr. Dendi Sherpa is professionally a tourist guide. And, therefore, he travels all over the Nepal mostly with foreigners particularly in the Himalayan regions. While travelling, the worst and most pitiable lives of CwDs those mostly from the remotest part of the country strike in his mind to do something towards making difference in their lives. He found that those CwDs are extremely excluded from the family, society and even from the geographical structures. So far, he had similar experiences in his childhood. These all factors motivated him eternally to establish a “CDCA Home” so that those CwDs can live and, challenge the difficulties to bring the differences in their lives. With this initiatives, CDCA has currently sixteen children with physical disabilities (9 boys & 7 girls) ranging ages from 5 to 18 years old who are from different parts of the districts viz. Gorakha, Jumla, Khotang, Solukhumbu,Sindhupalchowk and Dolakha districts of Nepal. All these districts are geographically remotest, socio-economically and educationally disadvantaged. Therefore, CDCA is providing them intensive care with homely environment, medical treatment to combat with disabilities and school education to impart light of knowledge in their life. CDCA does not only rehabilitate the CwDs from poorest families of remotest areas of Nepal instead it is conducting different types of programmatic interventions. For instances, it annually provides free of cost medical treatment to those children with physical disabilities who are financially poor and are from the poorest families of the remotest places. Moreover, it provides scholarship to the needy school children for their partial support to acquire school education Vision A country where all the children with physical disabilities and helpless children can live their lives with full of dignity and respect through independent lives. . Mission To enable the children with physical disabilities and helpless children providing child friendly environment by rehabilitating them, providing them school education, medical treatment and psychosocial counseling. Rupak Bohara

His leg deformed after fire caught him when he was around 5 years old. This story is of 15 years old

Rupak Bohara from Jumla. His parent was not able to take him to hospital for treatment due to

poorness. He came in contact with CDCA. In its initiation, his treatment was done in HRDC and was

brought in children home. Now he is studying in grade 9 in Pushpalal memorial boarding school.

He is staying in the home since 6 years with other children like him. He says “If i was not brought to

Kathmandu i could have been grazing cattle in the jungle without studying. Now I am studying in a

good English medium school and staying in homely environment with other friends, sister brothers. As

like Dendi Dai in future I want to be a social worker and help other who are in difficult situations”.

Mithun Rai

His father left them alone and went with another woman. So he says he has no remembrances of his

father. He only remembers his mother and younger brother. He is Mithun Rai, 18 years old from

Solukhumbu. His mother saved him fighting with fire when it caught their house but it burnt his hand

and right side face when he was just 3 years old.

CDCA brought him to HRDC for treatment and after he started living together with other children in the

home. He is studying in Puspalal memorial boarding school in grade 10. He says “when I will be adult, I

will be a teacher and teach children and work to help suppressed people in the community”.

Samjhana Rai:

“When I was in Khotang I used to walk like a cow with my legs and hand putting slippers. It is like a

dream now I can walk with walker and modified shoes and also go to school with the help of my friends

and crutches. If I was in village, I could not have gone to school, no sanitation. My life could have been

12

more miserable”. While saying her eyes were full with tears. She is Samjhana Rai, 14 years from

Dipsung, Khotang. Her both legs are thin and weak due to polio when she was 6 years old.

CDCA brought her to HRDC for treatment. After the treatment she came in the home. Now she is

studying in Puspalal Memorial boarding school in grade 6. In future she has interest to work for children

like her to put lights on their life as Dendi dai is doing today to them.

Her mother is alcoholic & her father left them and remarried with another woman. She has one elder

sister but has no news of her.

Rehabilitated case studies:

Bhumika Adhikari

Fire burnt her both legs into ash when she was just 3 weeks. Unfortunately, she flew into open fire

cooking stove after mother fainted when she got a stroke by the epilepsy while feeding her milk.

Epilepsy became unfortunate to them that father married another woman leaving them alone. This is a

story of 4 years old Bhumika Adhikari of Khotang district. She is the youngest among five girls’ children.

There was no hope of surviving my daughter. Her bed was her toilet. We used to see her when we had

time from work. Her burnt wound had never been ok. We had no money so we didn’t take her to

hospital for treatment”. Her mother Bhima Kumari said. In the village, she came to know CDCA can

help her daughter. She was brought to HRDC. After three month stay in hospital she is now able to walk

with the help of artificial leg and walker. She can also do her daily activities by herself. She is living

in CDCA home with other children. She will go to school from next education year.

13

Dikshya Thapa

In the age of 10 years old first time she step on the ground of school, heard school bell ringing, lined in

prayer and sit in front of teachers listening to him/her teaching different subjects. These things she

used to hear only from her younger brother, sister and other children around her house. She stood in

second position in her class. Her friends love to help in her mobility, reading and writing in school. She

is studying in grade 1 in Ever Green English School near to her house. Her sisters drop and carry in a

bicycle to school and home. This is what Dikshya Thapa of Rudrapur-8, Rupandehi shared her feeling

with us.

She was born with Spinal Bifida a birth defect disability where backbone lacks full development. So her

lower part down from hip does not function properly. She lost control on her urine and toilet activities.

She lives with her two elder sisters, one brother, parents and grandmother. Parents work in the field

and run a small shop in village.

CDCA identified her when it was on the way to monitor Kapilvastu projects. Then, she was brought to

Kathmandu in Norvic Hospital for treatment after consulting with neurosurgeon. After the successful

operation her condition was improved and now she is enjoying going school like her sister brother and

other children around home.
