Clínica Nueva Vida means New Life Clinic. This clinic was established 20 years ago in re-sponse to a refugee resettlement program after Hurricane Mitch hit Nicaragua and Honduras. The barrio of 12,000 people was named Nueva Vida. It is filled with poor families. Our clin-ic reaches those in the barrio and out-side into the city of Ciudad Sandino and surrounding rural communi-ties. In 2018 Nicaragua experienced political unrest that has left the Ministry of Health finan-cially strapped. Many NGOs left Nicaragua but the CDCA stayed and did not close the clinic during the violence, nor since… but struggles financially to continue to provide these programs and services which include:

We have on staff a Health Promoter who organizes 30 lay health promoters who then provide first aid kits and nebulizers from many of their homes. In 2018 they helped over 6,500 people. They provide education for the community and identify needs that the community wishes to have addressed.

We have support groups for: 1st time pregnant mothers; mothers with infants; mothers with toddlers; preteen / teenage girls (to prevent teen preg-nancy); the LBGT community; boys;

parents with asth-matic children; and patients with chronic condi-tions.

Exams are provided by both Nicara-guan doc-tors and international volunteer medical providers. In addition

We have a pro-gram that reach-es the elderly in their homes. We also have a program where new mothers and their infants are accompa-nied by clinic staff and volun-teer promoters through their pregnancy, birthing classes, and the first year of the child’s life

(weighing, measur-ing, and monitoring the infants). Almost 70% of our pediatrician’s pa-tients are 5 years old or younger. Our medical staff and volunteers provide home visits to the elderly, infants, and patients at risk.

A full-time radiologist is on staff, and provides much needed ultrasounds in Ciudad Sandino, a city

with a popula-tion around 200,000. Our old machine broke and is irreparable, but we hope to get a newer one in 2019. We also provide EKG services.

We continue to provide prenatal care, PAPs, and family planning, even though our ob/gyn resigned due to personal health issues. Our doctors write orders for lab

tests that are examined in our own

Lab tests are done by our part-time technician and by an outside pathologist. After receiving the results, our medical personnel write pre-scriptions, which our pharma-cy fills.

to acute care we provide services to patients with chronic conditions (e.g. hypertension, asthma, diabe-tes, etc.) which involve monthly appointments with doctors, medications, educational meetings and sup-port groups.
