The program focuses on reading. Reading integrates 3 other skills: Listening, speaking, and writing

Benefits of reading:

1) Gets new vocabulary that they can use later2) Can pronounce words3) Can read confidently4) Makes it more fun5) Improves students’ reading speed

HOW DOES THE READING

a) Students will be provided books .b) Home Reading Log book will be

provided to each student to record what students are reading.

c) Novel reading activities will be conducted in class.

d) 2 English teachers will be teaching in class most of the time.

THE HOME READING LOG PROGRAM The Reading log program requires students to: A) Read at home three times a week B) Thirty minutes each time C) Fill out the date, title of the book and comments. D) Comments are like: I like the book because I like

the main character Sarah. Examples will be given. E) Each student will be given a reading log. F) Reading log will be checked every week by the

teacher. G) For the reading log, students can read – comics,

magazines, newspaper, any kind of books or even material from the internet as long as it’s in English.

Parent's role: Ensure that your child has the reading material for

the week. Ensure that your child reads 3X a week for 30

minutes each time. Ensure that your child fills out the Home Reading

Log. Assist child in looking up difficult words if there are

any in the dictionary. Make reading a fun activity where parents can spend

quality time with your child. For parents who are able to speak English, please

try to communicate more in English with your child.

CONSEQUENCES FOR NOT READING: 1) Parents will be informed in the

communication book. 2) The reading log is part of the overall

assessment so it’s important that all students put the effort needed.

3) Students’ break time will be reduced and they will have to complete Self Access Reading tasks.

LISTENING SKILLS

A) Listening to the teacher B) Listening exercises from the

grammar books C) Listening exercises from the

storybooks using a CD or teacher’s voice.

WRITING SKILLS A) Answering reading comprehension

questions. B) Starting to write simple

paragraphs C) Technical details such as spelling,

grammar, punctuation and capitals are integrated in the lessons.

Assessment Assessments will be done by integrating

all the 4 language skills in the form of formative tests and classroom activities including spelling quizzes.

Assessments will also be done through the EHB ( Evaluasi Hasil Belajar).

Other programs: 1)English Day every Wednesday where

all students will have to communicate in English with each other.

2) Student Teacher Communications will be conducted in English by all English teachers and some selected teachers that are fluent in English.
