Yesterday I received an e-mail from Alec “Doc” Isabeau, informing me that the Monday night run he has hosted from his home for the past quarter-century has
officially reached its finish line. The next e-mail came just minutes later, and was sent by John “Mojo” Royston:
It is with great sorrow that I read these words. I was running the Monday night run when Joanie and I lived on Montgomery. On a few occasions I ran from home to the run, then at Woodlake I believe, then home again. That was 1989, making it 25 years. And I was certainly intending to return after my recovery. I completely understand and have often been amazed at how long this run has endured. An ER institution is gone...
In the early years I would join in on the run from time to time. It was unique for many reasons but mostly because it started at 7:00 p.m. year-round, rain or shine, in evening sun, twilight or darkness. I’m not sure when, but at some point the run was declared to be exactly 49 minutes long.
I probably made it to only a few dozen runs over the years (out of over 1200 – do the math!) but I know that none of routes we covered were ever repeated. It didn’t matter if we ventured onto the trails of Annadel State Park or dodged traffic in the dark crossing Yulupa Avenue on our neighborhood tours, somehow the 49 minute mark always came within a block or two of Alec’s house.
Let me state here (my opinion) that the run was not for everyone. There was a pace to be held
and only begrudging tolerance for stragglers. It wasn’t overly strenuous for the regulars and the majority of seasoned newcomers who showed up out of the blue. Some who struggled to hang with the pack but enjoyed the comaraderie actually became better runners just because they wanted to be part of this group.
And you had to have thick skin to roll with this crowd. Few subjects were off limits and once a pack member was singled out for ridicule a feeding frenzy of over-the-top insults and humiliation was likely to follow. Even if you were the target of such abuse you could be entertained as long as you understood that it was all in fun. I have rarely laughed so hard on a run!
Another danger you could encounter with this group was the assumption that you knew where they were headed. Woe is you who finds yourself ahead of both Doc and Mojo on a Monday night run! At some point you will look back to find that your training group has been whittled down to one. Good luck calculating the remainder of your 49 minutes.

In recent years my only contact with the group was on the nights I hosted a crowd for Monday Night Football. Somehow the leaders of the Yolo Yo-Yos, few of whom knew what the letters NFL stand for, kept track of when the Bears were playing and routed their herd of lemmings past my house. The doorbell would ring, Mojo would rush in and render my bathroom off-limits for the evening, and regulars like Doc, Two Shoes, Dutch and Rhino would jog a lap around my living room while the newbies hung around outside in the dark, probably wondering if the police would be showing up at any minute.
If the Bears were winning I would welcome them with open arms. Most nights I would be pouting about my team’s inept play and considered their visit an unwelcome incursion into my personal space. How dare they!
I always intended to be more of a regular for the Monday night run. I enjoyed it every time and yet considered it an inconvenience because it started and finished at such a late hour. Only now that it is gone do I realize how much I missed out on over the years. I need to use this as a lesson going forward. Time spent with good friends is never time wasted.
On Robin Williams
Yes, he did run the Kenwood Footrace, at least once. I was there in 1984, bringing my Montgomery High School cross country team to assist with putting on the event. This was years before the Empire Runners assumed ownership of the race. The race director, let’s call him R.D. K, was almost a one-man enterprise in those days and Kenwood was his biggest event.
Unfortunately his “senior staff” consisted of his mom – let’s call her Mother K – who I will politely describe as being an unpleasant woman.
R.D. K ironicallly assigned her to the “Trouble Station,” therefore defining the term “Double Trouble” for any runner who ended up having to visit Mother K on race day.
Robin was in his absolute heyday as the star of Mork & Mindy in 1984 and, although his space was respectfully heeded by the Kenwood crowd that morning, it was clear that everyone instantly recognized America’s latest superstar celebrity. Everyone except Mother K.
One bold young autograph seeker was rewarded with Robin’s bib number when he brushed aside her scrap of paper, unpinned his number and signed it to her. Ah, but when he went to pick up his t-shirt a few minutes later, he found that he needed to have his race number. Robin was sent to the Trouble Station.
Robin was at his comedic best in dealing with Mother K who, as I watched in both amusement and horror, would accept no excuse for an entrant “losing” his bib. He was clearly disappointed that he would not get his shirt but effusively praised Mother K for her diligent service as he shook her hand, thanking her for her time.
When he left I approached Mother K and said to her, “Don’t you know who that was?” A blank stare. “Mork!” Nothing. Of Mork & Mindy!” Still nothing. “Robin Williams!” Mother K finally fired back, “More like Robin Hood!. No number, no shirt!”
Then I watched as my number one assitant, a girlfriend coincidentally named Robinn, furtively grabbed a shirt from a box behind Mother K and slipped it to Robin, who was genuinely grateful. That is exactly who he was.

All good things come to an end. The Monday Night Run, born a quarter century ago, when Dan “409” Preston and I would meet for a relaxed 30 minute recovery jog (between grueling Sunday trail runs and Tuesday track workouts), has run out of steam. Over the ensuing years, the MNR became a reliable ritual of social, conversational running, where many strong and lasting friendships were formed and countless non-running adventures (e.g. rock climbing, backpacking, 4-wheeling) were spawned by our collective enthusiasm and oxygen deprivation.
Dan “409” Preston and Alec “Doc” Isabeau
It didn’t take long for 409 and me to be joined by an ever-expanding circle of fellow Empire Runners – the real MNR stalwarts over the years were Mojo Royston, Tim Stewart and Lars Andersen. Other regulars, at one time or another, included Jerry Lyman, Eric Downing
(he received his nom de guerre “Puddles” on a wet MNR), Lou Garcia, Val and Dave Sell, Dave Secchitano, Dave Goodwin, Joe Tonna, Rick Descano, Dave DeSelle, Terry McNeil, Dave and Christy Holligan (remember them?), Peter Masi, Bruce Linscott (the Tamalpan), Bruce Scott, Peter Kirk, Scott Ames, the Hutch, Bob Merritt, Big Al Tagliaferri, and countless others who showed up episodically. At first, we met for the MNR at the bachelor pad Lou and I shared in Woodlake, then we moved briefly to the parking lot of what now is Whole Foods (wasn’t it a Mulsberry’s or an A&P back then?). We had a brief stint at the Masi’s house up on the “Holligan-Garcia Loop”, but for 95% of its tenure the run began and ended here at the Isabeau house on Yolo Court. Over the years, the MNR developed a few rules of engagement, which were rarely broken:
1. We left at 7:05 p.m., sharp.
2. We always ran 49 minutes. Somehow, eerily, no matter the route or pace, we rarely deviated from this entirely arbitrary standard by more than two minutes in either direction. In the early years, this meant the run was about seven miles long. More recently, we could squeeze and wheeze about 5 ½ miles into our 49 minutes. (Remember the one and only Monday Night Walk? The day after our victory at the Calistoga to Santa Cruz Relay in 2002 we were all so sore and tired that we simply strolled for half an hour and called it good.)
3. No training effect was allowed – this was supposed to be a recovery run. This was
Monday Night Memories

The Empire Runners Club | www.empirerunners.org | [email protected]
Typical Monday Night Runners, from left, John “Mojo” Royston, Tim “Stewie” Stewart, Dale “Sledge” Peterson and Alec “Doc” Isabeau
the most frequently broken of the rules, with excursions up Holland Heights or to Lake Ilsanjo, or simply whenever Val showed up.
4. We never ran the same route two weeks in a row.
5. We always circled back for slow, tired runners. Those who disobeyed this rule were summarily ditched on the run and/or dressed down later.
6. Driving rain, howling wind, bitter cold and sweltering heat were embraced as bonuses. Tim Stewart, in particular, just relished those stormy winter runs in horizontal driving rain.
7. When you showed up at Yolo Court, you didn’t knock on the front door, for heaven’s sake, you just walked in, like family.
LT might be in her cow pajamas, cooking dinner, watching the Niner’s on TV, but she would remind you that “Monday Night Runners don’t need to knock, got it? Just don’t let the cats out!”
8. Did I mention that we always ran 49 minutes? …Even if Lars’ cesium-decay pulsar-synchronized atomic wristwatch indicated something outrageous like 37:21, we ran 49 minutes. Do I make myself perfectly clear?
In the past few years, the MNR crowd has thinned, like our hair.
Changing schedules, priorities, injuries, Monday Night Football gatherings, new careers (including the Navy SEALs, emergency medicine, and others), various excuses, both legitimate and lame, and the natural flux of life have closed this chapter of the Monday Night Run. Perhaps someone else will consider hosting a new MNR, maybe at an earlier hour in the evening? When it’s dark and raining on a Monday night twenty years from now, will you be out running and laughing with your best friends? I hope so.
It’s been great. Thanks all!
Cheers,
Doc

Rubber Ducky You’re the One…at The Salmon Creek Beach Run
By: Heidi Cusworth
Despite the weather being a typical Bodega Bay foggy mist, sixty- two runners took to the sands at Salmon Creek for either the 2 or 5 mile run. Once everyone registered in the upper parking lot and unloaded any potluck treats down on the Empire Runner tables down on the beach, they headed off to the starting line. Eric Bohn, the race event director, explained the EXTREMELY technical rules, starting with the explanation of the expertly measured starting line drawn in the sand. He then further explained that the 2 milers had to run around “the stick” with the ribbon (skillfully monitored by Ernie Bohn), and the 5 mile runners needed to run to the end of the beach, touch/kiss the rock and then head back to the start. This of course was all based on honor system, but all participants should know that we have video…
A number of participants chose to run barefoot, not such a good option up in Annadel, but works well for this event. This race was well represented by juniors, with 9 of the top 10 overall and 7 of the top 8 females in the 2 mile and the winner of the 5 mile all being under 18. The overall winners for the 2 mile were Connor Deleuze, Nehemiah Skandera, and Job Skandera.
The top 3 women were Sarah Skandera (age 10!), Val Sell, and McKenna Sell. The overall winners for the 5 mile were Nicholas Rauch, Jerry Finlay, and Tony Passantino. The top 3 women were Gretchen Forrey, Karen Kissick, and Elena Parolini.
Everyone who crossed the line received a winning rubber ducky. These duckies have been collected over the years, some runners even asked to trade in for a new style so they wouldn’t have any repeats!! Very cool, and understandable! Hopefully their collections continue to grow for years to come. Once everyone returned, the potluck began. People were incredibly generous with their treats. Homemade items disappeared so fast, the seagulls didn’t have half a chance to scope them out. Fresh fruit, salads, chocolate goodies, and pretzel chips rounded out all the “yumminess”. Once people settled down with their plates, the award ceremony was able to take place. There are awards given to the overall winners of each race - first place was a beautiful beach towel, second place was a baseball hat, and third was an extra-large beach ball. The division winners received salt-water taffy for first place, a kite for second, and a popular pinwheel for third place. After the awards, people hung out snacking and beach balls started flying up into the air. The Salmon Creek Beach Runs were a great success. Thank you for attending and thank you to all the volunteers (Eric and Ernie Bohn, Bill and Heidi Cusworth, and Jerry Lyman). Rubber Ducky, I'm awfully fond of you…

Brad’s Corner
For the next few months I have decided to read and review a number of books written by or about women. So you can expect to see reviews about Grete Waitz, Joanie Benoit and Wilma Rudolph among others. I am still looking for a good book about Mary Decker-Slaney, so if anyone is aware of one let me know. The first book in this vein’ was recommended to me by one of my ER XC teammates and Thursday night regular, Steve Agar, who is a friend and teammate of
the author, Leah Pells.
Leah Pells was a world class 800/1500 track athlete for Canada. She was a multi-time Olympian for Canada in the 1990s first qualifying in 1992 in the 3000, then running her best 1500 in 1996 in Atlanta. She qualified again in 2000 (Sidney) but unfortunately, although she was in the best shape of her life, she shattered the talus bone in her foot in the preliminaries and didn’t make the finals.
“NOT ABOUT THE MEDAL”, by, Leah Pells,
WordNerd, Surrey, BC, Canada, 2012, pp 231.
“Not About the Medal “ is less a book about a world class runner’s running exploits and more about a woman’s survival of a very painful childhood and how running played an indispensable role. The book was passionately and well written. It was a pretty fast read but I must warn you that it is a painful read as well. Leah and her brother were raised by a single, alcoholic mother. If you are a survivor of an alcoholic upbringing you may find this book hard to read. Alternatively you may be enlightened on the manner of her development to adulthood.
If you were thinking this will be a nice book about a world class middle distance runner you will find that Leah spends about 2 chapters about her professional career but there is running throughout the book as you might expect considering her upbringing. As most runners have experienced, the act of running provides so many therapeutic, physical and health benefits and it is obvious that running is her salvation; her ‘safe zone’.
Frankly, prior to reading this I knew very little about Leah Pells running career. After reading the book I feel like I lived through a tornado and came out the other side, affected but alive. I recommend this book to everybody no matter what your upbringing. This book has something for everybody and I have left out the third theme that completes this story on purpose for you to discover on your own.
There are many books that are great when you are reading them but within six months or so you can’t clearly remember them. I can say, without reservation, that this book will remain memorable.
This book can be found at Amazon, Wordnerd or by googling Leah Pells and buying directly. Check out the library as well.
I rate it a 4.5/5 ****1/2

The Tuesday Nite Run:
Last month I extolled the virtue of the many Empire Runner Club runs, specifically, the Thursday Nite run. This month I thought I would give an update on the Tuesday Nite run (TNR). The Tuesday Nite run is led by none other than our Club President and long time coach, Larry Meredith. Due to that, the starting point for the TNR is at “the Palace”, 3390 Princeton Dr, Santa Rosa. This workout includes a warm-up, a speed/power session and a warm-down. During the year the speed/power session changes but what is consistent is the session is designed for many running levels though not the beginner. To get the most out of these sessions you need enough base to be able to push the workout. That being said the speed/power work is done, based on the ability of each person and is often seeded to keep the goup together for the repeats.
January thru April the Tuesday night speed session is often “neighborhood repeats” which are seeded with the slowest getting a head start. These are either timed or object driven (ie run to a certain object) With any luck at all Grace Hill repeats may be thrown in once a winter.
April thru July are repeat sessions at the Montgomery HS track. Meet at the Palace and jog over, then warm-up, then speed work, then warm-down (which may include some barefoot work on the football field) and jog back to the Palace. If you can get there early, Val may lead you in a 20-30min running drill session. The speed session is different each week (see calendar for the session). This will prepare you for a great track series each year.
August thru mid November the TNR adds hill repeats. Again start at the Palace and jog to:
Howarth (Camp WaTam hill repeats), Medica road repeats, Grace Hill Repeats (maybe?!). Lawn repeats are also added. The 500yd Lawn
repeats are performed at SRJC on a soft but uneven surface and are seeded individually and/or in teams. These workouts are designed to improve your Cross-Country racing and times.
Sometime during the year the Merediths host a post TNR potluck and no host libations. So in conclusion if you have a good base and are looking for some speed/power work, a change in your everyday routine or are looking to improve cross-country and trail run results, you should strongly consider a try at the TNR. Who knows, you may like it, you may see definitive improvement or you just may meet some new people to share your running “jones” with. Hope to see you there.

The Long and Short of It
Another Summer Track Series has come and gone. Here is a big thank you to race directors Paul Berg and Brad Zanetti Montgomery High School, their coaches, running program and volunteers. Without these folks there would be no track meets. 2014 was another successful year. I personally only ran in two meets this year as I missed two while traveling in Canada and Alaska and was called upon to help with timing at another. I will say though that both of the races I ran this year were a lot of fun, in no small part due to the support of the folks lining the track. I felt like I was running in a big meet and that my effort meant something. If you have not had this experience, you need to come out and give it a try next year. It is magical.
