GATHERING IN GOD'S NAME

HYMN: O Jesus I have promised

All O Jesus, I have promised to serve you to the end; Lord be forever near me, my master and my friend; I shall not fear the battle if you are by my side, nor wander from the pathway if thou wilt be my guide.

Still let me feel you near me: the world is ever near; I see the sights that dazzle, the tempting sounds I hear; my foes are ever near me, around me and within; but Jesus, draw me nearer, and shield my soul from sin. O let me hear you speaking in accents clear and still, above the storms of passion, the murmurs of self will; O speak to reassure me, to chasten or control; O speak and make me listen, true guardian of my soul.

Lord, let me see your footmarks and in them plant my own; that I may follow boldly and in your strength alone; O guide me, call me, draw me, uphold me to the end; and then in heaven receive me, my Saviour and my friend.

GREETING

Priest The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. All And also with you.

SENTENCE

PRAYER OF PREPARATION

LA Let us pray: All Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION   LA God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy, welcoming sinners and inviting them to the Lord's table. Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, with a sincere and a true heart.

All Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Priest Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. All Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING: Genesis 22.1-14

Reader Hear the word of the Lord, All Thanks be to God.

PSALM: Psalm 86:1-10, 16-17

LA How long, O Lord, will you so utterly forget me: All how long will you hide your face from me? How long must I suffer anguish in my soul, and be so grieved in my heart day and night: how long shall my enemy triumph over me? Look upon me, O Lord my God, and answer me: lighten my eyes, lest I sleep in death; Lest my enemy say ‘I have prevailed’: lest my foes exult at my overthrow. Yet I put my trust in your unfailing love: O let my heart rejoice in your salvation. And I will make my song to the Lord: because he deals so bountifully with me.

SECOND READING: Romans 6.12-23

Reader Hear the word of the Lord, All Thanks be to God.

THE CREED

LA Let us together affirm the faith of the Church:

All We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

Amen.

PREPARATION FOR THE EUCHARIST

LA Jesus said: A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you. John 13.34

THE PRAYER OF APPROACH

LA Let us pray: All We do not presume to come to your table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord whose nature is always to have mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.

THE GREETING OF PEACE

Priest We are the body of Christ. All His Spirit is with us.

Priest The peace of the Lord be always with you. All And also with you.

We turn to those nearby, and say ‘Peace be with you’. At this time, please avoid handshakes or hugs.

HYMN: When we walk with the Lord

All When we walk with the Lord, in the light of his word, what a glory he sheds on our way! While we do his good will, he abides with us still, and with all who will trust and obey.

Trust and obey, for there's no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies but his smile quickly drives it away; not a doubt nor a fear, not a sigh nor a tear, can abide while we trust and obey.

Not a burden we bear, not a sorry we share, but our toil he doth richly repay; not a grief or a loss, not a frown or a cross, but is blest if we trust and obey.

But we never can prove, the delights of his love until all on the altar we lay; for the favour he shows, and the joy he bestows, are for them who will trust and obey.

Then in fellowship sweet, we will sit at his feet, or we'll walk by his side in the way; what he says we will do, where he sends we will go; never fear, only trust and obey.
