CASE STUDY

Background

Andersson Elffers Felix, based in Utrecht in the Netherlands, is a strategy and organizational consultancy fi rm that specializes in the public sector. All fi fty consultants at Andersson ElffersFelix (AEF) require fl exible, remote access to the corporate network. To safeguard the security and integrity of corporate data, AEF deployed a token-based solution. In 2008, the system had reached the end of its life cycle. AEF needed to fi nd an alternative. After evaluating various solutions, it selected SafeNet’s eToken NG-OTP.

Business Need and Challenges

Established in 1982, AEF has grown into an organization with fi fty consultants and a supporting staff of ten people, as well as regular interns. AEF’s main customers are companies that require strategic advice. As many consultants work on site at clients, remote access is essential.

“The main reason for choosing SafeNet was

its ability to offer a combination of network

authentication and physical access. This is

practical for users and for IT management. We do

not need separate systems for access to the offi ce

and in addition employees are less likely to forget

to bring their token.”

“Our main requirements for the new system were

strong authentication, ease of use and integration

with physical access to our offi ce. The integration

with physical access was especially a major issue

for us. It’s important that employees can enter the

offi ce at any time to work on a project or plan. This

requires a practical and user-friendly, but also

secure system.”

About Andersson Elffers Felix

The Solution: eToken NG-OTP and eToken TMS

After evaluating various solutions, AEF selected SafeNet’s eToken NG-OTP solution in mid-2008 and implemented the solution in October 2008. In a short pilot phase, the IT department tested interfaces to other systems, including the wireless network, and the phased deployment itself went smoothly. During the implementation, AEF was supported by SafeNet (Aladdin) partner B-able.

Solution Benefi ts

Combined physical-logical access - • AEF employees use their tokens to securely access the company offi ces, enhancing the in-perimeter security and for remote access to the network when working on site at customers.

Enhanced password management -• Employees enjoy the benefi ts of eToken’sWeb Sign On-capability (eToken WSO). This enables them to store their log-in data of websites on the token, thus enabling them to log on to a website automatically.

Ease of use – • Users have responded positively to the new authenticators.

For the time being, AEF deploys the tokens based on user name pin code and password. In the near future, AEF plans to expand into certifi cate-based (PKI) authentication. At this stage, they will utilize eToken NG-OTP’s smart card capabilities, where users are required to insert the token in a pc or laptop, adding another layer of security to AEF’s data and systems.

“You press the button once and a one-time-

password code appears. You then simply enter the

code and begin working. Additionally, it is practical

that the token can be used for in perimeter access,

to enter the offi ce.”
