Mission-driven. Community-based. Not-for-profit.These are more than words. They are the principles and philosophy that drive every decision that ProMedica makes as an organization.

With people as our foundation, we believe that health care is about delivering compassionate care, high-quality services, and exceptional experiences. We believe that building healthier communities extends beyond our walls and requires taking a broader view and greater role in the health of our communities.

Our Vision is to create communities where all individuals reach their highest potential for health. To fulfill our Mission, it is critical that we navigate the significant shifts and changes in the healthcare environment. And, over the next several years, we will use our strategic principles to help guide the organization, align resources and deliver superior results for our patients, our employees and our communities.

ProMedica embraces its role as an anchor institution and has taken a leadership role in addressing hunger and several other social determinants as the root causes of poor health in the communities we serve. ProMedica’s thought leadership on addressing hunger has reached a national scale and has been a catalyst for multiple initiatives that address hunger in local communities. ProMedica has added momentum to the recent revitalization of the Toledo community, moving its nearly 1,000 corporate employees to a renovated downtown campus and by investing capital in various community development projects that foster economic development across the region.

2017 Mission and Community Benefit Report

• ProMedica implemented system-wide, a new RF Sponge Detection Technology from Medtronic. The new technology addresses the issue of retained sponges in surgical and labor/delivery patients with the goal of ensuring patient safety and eliminating retained sponges. Implementation of Medtronic’s Situate Detection technology was implemented in all areas where sponge counts occur, including surgery, EP labs and labor/delivery.

• The Radiation Oncology Programs at ProMedica Flower and Bixby Hospitals as well as ProMedica Monroe Cancer Center have received a full, three-year accreditation from the American College of Radiology. This survey validates the appropriate and safe delivery and documentation of radiation therapy along with positively noting ongoing quality assessment and improvement efforts. This is a voluntary accreditation that demonstrates ProMedica’s and ProMedica Cancer Institute’s commitment to quality.

• ProMedica opened a Specialty Pharmacy to aid patients who are living with chronic and complex health conditions and need specialized therapies or personalized care. The pharmacy provides dispensing for specialty medications used to treat chronic health conditions, including cystic fibrosis, ulcerative colitis and Chron’s disease, hepatitis C, multiple sclerosis, autoimmune disease, cancer, and much more.

• ProMedica broke ground for the new Lenawee County Hospital in Michigan. The new hospital’s name will be the ProMedica Charles and Virginia Hickman Hospital. The Hickman family gift, made in major part by Steve and Sally Hickman, is the largest donation in the history of ProMedica, and continues a long family tradition of giving to advance health care in the region. The new hospital will consolidate the existing ProMedica Bixby and Herrick Hospitals into one facility, which represents a $135 million investment in the community.

• A new Sepsis Predictive Analytics tool is now available in Epic. Epic developed a standard model for early identification of sepsis, which provides a clearer picture of the future. Sepsis predictive models identify patients who are most at risk for sepsis, and scores are precise due to a rich data model based on dozens of data points, including diagnoses, medications, and lab results. Epic’s predictive analytics identify the earliest signs of sepsis, calculates the patient’s risk factors, and its decision support tools guide clinicians to early interventions and treatment.

• Tomosynthesis, also known as 3D mammography, became available at ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital in 2017. Unlike traditional 2D imaging that produces a “flat” image of the breast, 3D imaging takes millimeter “slices” of the breast and then reassembles the “slices” to produce images the radiologist reads. Since implementing Tomosynthesis at Monroe, 40 additional appointment slots per week have become available as a result of greater efficiencies, allowing the center to serve more patients sooner.

Community Advocacy• ProMedica established the Ebeid Promise, a 10-year, $50 million

community revitalization initiative thanks to a generous $28.5 million gift from the family of philanthropist and former Board Member Russell J. Ebeid. The Ebeid Promise will expand the scope and purpose of ProMedica’s Ebeid institute with a key focus on the social determinants of health – health, nutrition, education, job creation, and financial stability. This long-term investment will start with the UpTown Toledo neighborhood and will be expanded to Toledo’s Monroe Street Corridor, near ProMedica Toledo Hospital. Plans include replicating this concept in communities across ProMedica’s service area in coming years.

• ProMedica established a national research center devoted to studying the impact of social determinants of health on individuals and communities. The center is being developed in cooperation with the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences. It will be one of the first of its kind in the nation and uses a multidisciplinary approach to understand and propose solutions to address the conditions in which people are born, live, work and age that affect their health and well-being.

• ProMedica continues to operate two food clinics – one at ProMedica Health and Wellness Center and the other at ProMedica’s Center for Health Services – to serve patients who screen positive for food insecurity and have a referral from their primary care provider. Patients are able to receive food for themselves and their family from either location. As part of the program, each patient receives two to three days of supplemental food for their family. Through December 2017, more than 9,700 visits were made to the Food Clinics, impacting more than 3,200 unique households. This translates to about 74,520 days’ worth of food provided to patients and families in the community, the equivalent of 223,560 meals.

• ProMedica’s Financial Opportunity Center (FOC), provided education and counseling to nearly 1,000 individuals in 2017. Housed in the Ebeid Institute, FOC helps individuals needing

Established in 1986, ProMedica serves 28 counties in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan and is one of the region’s leading healthcare providers. Our stewardship of resources has enabled us to wisely invest in cutting-edge technology, innovative programs and family-centered facilities that help to ensure patients and area residents have equal access to high-quality, safe care in the most appropriate setting, regardless of a patient’s ability to pay.

Based on needs that we have assessed within the communities we serve, ProMedica launched new services and programs in 2017 to help meet the growing demands of local consumers across all spectrums of life, including those individuals who are often the most vulnerable when it comes to health care: the elderly, poor and underserved.

ProMedica and its affiliates comprise more than 330 sites, more than 2,300 physicians, approximately 15,000 employees, and more than 460 volunteer board members. During 2017, ProMedica discharged more than 83,000 inpatients and served more than 1.6 million outpatient visits, while handling 380,000 emergency visits system-wide.

Additionally, our physicians, leadership team members and employees individually contribute personal resources to the community in numerous ways – such as through tutoring elementary students in reading, providing health lectures at local senior centers, offering summer employment and job training for at-risk youth, generously contributing to community fundraising campaigns such as United Way, participating in medical missions, serving on local not-for-profit boards, and donating nonperishable goods to numerous local food pantries and churches – underscoring a key benefit of ProMedica being locally owned and operated.

income support (public benefits) and employment coaching and counseling, as well as free tax preparation through the Ohio Benefits Bank. FOC also offers a digital literacy series to assist individuals wishing to improve their computer literacy and skills to be more marketable to prospective employers.

• ProMedica’s Summer Youth Employment Program partnered 40 central-city teens, ages 16 – 19, with mentors in ProMedica departments such as human resources, radiology, nutrition services, and information technology, to learn skills including customer service, punctuality, and being accountable to others.

• In 2017, ProMedica primary care providers began screening patients for social determinants of health by asking questions related to education, employment, food security, housing, transportation, and violence. Patients who screen positive for any of the factors are connected to necessary community programs and resources for assistance.

• ProMedica was one of three finalists nationwide for the prestigious Foster G. McGaw Prize. As a result, ProMedica received $10,000 to be used in support of community health initiatives including Teen Pep and Come to the Table food reclamation programs, as well as our partnership with Toledo/Lucas County CareNet.

• A Hoop House donated by the Eisenhower Center was constructed on the farm property adjacent to the ProMedica Charles & Virginia Hickman Hospital campus in Lenawee County. The specialized greenhouse will provide opportunities for rehabilitative therapy. It will feature accessible garden beds, hydroponic and aquaponics systems, and eventually a fairy garden with a monarch butterfly house.

Research and Education• In 2017, ProMedica welcomed 130 residents/fellows and

460 medical students from the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences as part of the Academic Affiliation created in 2015. The collaboration is helping to advance medical education and clinical research in northwest Ohio, building a legacy model of health care that will benefit community members across the region.

• ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital had six new traditional year interns that started in a newly-approved medical education training program. Additionally, seven new emergency medicine residents and six new family medicine residents started rotations at the hospital. This brought all Monroe Hospital training programs to full capacity for learners.

Strategic Innovation• Kapios Health, a healthcare technology focused on the

development of digital health apps and created by ProMedica Innovations inventors, was approved for an additional $600,000 in funding ($300,000 from ProMedica and $300,000 from Kaonsoft) to hire new personnel.

• ProMedica Innovations is collaborating with NextTech Ohio, an organization comprised of ProMedica, Mercy Health, The University of Toledo, and Bowling Green State University. In 2017, the Ohio Third Frontier Board awarded an $8.7 million grant to NextTech to serve as northwest Ohio’s Entrepreneurial Services Provider (ESP) to help accelerate the growth of early stage Ohio technology companies.

Workplace of Choice• Throughout 2017, ProMedica implemented its new time and

attendance tool, MyTime, which allows employees to log time and request time off through a web-based application. It provides centralized and standardized time and attendance and staffing and scheduling applications for employees system-wide. MyTime replaces multiple systems that were used to track time worked and manage time off.

• ProMedica launched two employee engagement pulse surveys system-wide, in April and October. The survey allowed employees across the system to have the opportunity to provide feedback on engagement efforts to date and focused on the three key engagement themes for 2017: communications in the organization, respect for employees, and trust in senior leadership.

• In 2017, human resources recruiting filled 5,183 positions bringing 3,636 new employees to the organization.
