Learning outcomes At the end of the lesson, the student will be able to a) Define pain b) Review basic principles of pain assessment & management c) Discuss intervention: Non-pharmacological & pharmacological Assumed Knowledge Pre-clinical medical sciences module Lecture Contents i. Define pain: IASP ii. Assessment of pain: PQRSTU mnemonics iii. Goals of pain rating scales iv. Types of pain rating scales v. Intervention: Guiding principle vi. Non-pharmalogical intervention vii. Pharmalogical intervention: WHO analgesic ladder viii. Sedation score: Ramsay sedation scale ix. Topical, Regional, PCA x. Pre-emptive analgesia xi. Special consideration in children & the elderly Clinical Relevance Pain is considered the 5 th vital sign.
