Foreword

Dr. Andrew Pryke

Dr. Pryke was one of a group of researchers which founded FaraPack Polymers Ltd. in 2004 and has fulfilled the role of Principle Polymer Scientist since this time. Previous to this he worked for a contract chemical manufacturer immediately upon leaving school from 1988 until 1996 specialising in polymer R & D. During this time, he obtained a first class honours degree in chemistry and rose to become a senior laboratory scientist. In 1996 he successfully applied to the University of Sheffield to study for a PhD in “The synthesis and physical characterisation of well-defined linear and star polydienes” which was duly completed in 2000. Following this he carried out postdoctoral research with a number of academics before the inception of FaraPack Polymers.

FaraPack Polymers Ltd.

FaraPack was formed in 2004 by a group of researchers within the chemistry department of the University of Sheffield in order to commercialise the novel materials being produced within that department. Since this time they have moved into the area of providing bespoke polymer and material research, analysis and consultation from within the University sphere to clients in a wide range of industries. They are wholly owned by the University of Sheffield and boast three eminent professors from both science and engineering faculties as current board members. One of these is Professor Tony Ryan OBE. who is currently director of The Grantham Centre (http://www.granthamfoundation.org/ ) within the University of Sheffield, which aims to support sustainability research at the University of Sheffield and Ryan represented the Grantham Centre at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris in December 2015.

Executive Summary

Janger Ltd. contacted FaraPack (FP) with the aim of carrying out a survey into the environmental cost benefits of using its single piece polypropylene hanger system (in its various guises) over that of the more commonly employed traditional single or multi-piece hangers of the type currently used by outlets to display garments for sale and to a lesser extent by consumers to hang purchased items once in the home. The ultimate aim being to inform consumers and retailers as to the benefits gained by switching to Janger hangers.

This research has proven the concept of a single piece injection moulded polypropylene hanger to be of the order of 3-4 times less environmentally damaging as the current larger hanger types and in addition they are 4-5 times more efficient to transport in terms of fuel per Km per item, a saving which can be fully exploited due to their proportionally smaller size.

Results

The following hangers were assessed:

Transport

In addition to the figures calculated above it may also be useful to compare the costs associated with transporting a given mass a given distance and equating this to the cost of transporting a single item.

Transport Type Ton miles/gallon fuel Gallons fuel per mile per ton

Truck 41 0.02439

Plane 5 0.2

Train 100 0.01

Ship 140 0.007143

This data, along with the mass of one item of the various hanger types is then used to calculate the volume of fuel required (cm-3) to transport 1000 of a particular item one mile, using the various modes of transport, the following is found:

Fuel cost: cm-3 per 1000 items per mile (fossil fuel)

Brand/Logo Truck Plane Train Ship

Original Janger PP 0.977017 8.011538 0.400577 0.286126

Slim Janger PP 0.569926 4.673397 0.23367 0.166907

Inj Moulded one-piece PP 4.732425 38.80589 1.940294 1.385925

Slide average multi part 5.963874 48.90376 2.445188 1.746563

Which leads to the conclusion that transporting multi-part slide hangers commonly used today costs between 5 and 10 time that of transporting the corresponding number of Jangers.

Conclusion

In conclusion it can be stated quite confidently that Janger type hangers are better than the traditional type hangers already on the market for 3 main reasons:

Per item they are much lighter and therefore consume much less energy to produce. In addition, this leads to savings in transport costs between both the hanger producer and the garment producer and the consumer and the recycling facility. Typically, in terms of the energy costs incurred from cradle (materials in the ground) to gate (manufactured product) a Janger is approximately one seventh that of a single piece traditional hanger and one eighth that of a slide hanger.

1

They are considerably smaller, in fact the excluded volume of an original Janger is approximately 18 times less than an injection moulded one-piece shoulder type traditional hanger and 60 times less than that of a multi-part slide hanger, which leads to savings in transport.

2

They are single-piece, one-material designs and as such are cheaper to produce due to no post-moulding assembly steps being required and are, for the same reason, far easier to put back into the recycling stream at the end of life stage.
