On November 26 AmCham was visited by the UNEE group, a small group that is developing a project to create links be- tween universities, enterprises and the government with the purpose of increase the productivity, de- velopment and com- petitively of both the universities and Panamanian enter- prise. It is composed of several universities, including Universi- dad Tecnológica de Panamá (UTP), Uni- versidad de Panamá (UP), Universidad Autónoma de Chiri- quí (UNACHI), Uni- versidad Especiali- zada de las Américas (UDELAS), Universi- dad Marítima Inter- nacional de Panamá (UMIP) and Universi- dad Latina de Panamá (ULAT), to- gether with the not- for-profit organiza- tions UNPYME, CO- SPAE AND CONEP. Don Elder is Project Manager for Caterpillar Latin America Support Services, S.de R.L., with responsibility for the design and con- struction of Caterpil- lar’s new Customer Demonstration and Learning Center be- ing established near Veracruz, Pa- nama. Don joined Caterpillar in 1999, and prior to this as- signment he was the Technical Training Manager for Caterpil- lar Latin America Commercial Division, operating from the Miami Skills Acquisi- tion Center in Miami Lakes, Florida. He has also served as Professional Develop- ment Consultant and 6 Sigma Deployment Champion for Cater- pillar Americas Com- pany. Don graduated from the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York in 1971, and served as an officer of Ar- mor/Cavalry until his retirement from ac- tive duty in 1999. He is a gradu- ate of the US Army Command and Gen- eral Staff College, US Army School of the Americas, and the Interamerican De- fense College in Washington, D.C. He holds a Master of Arts in Spanish Lan- guage from Middle- bury College. During his Army ca- reer, Don served in a wide variety of mili- tary and diplomatic assignments. He commanded the 3 rd Battalion, 70 th Armor from 1989-1991, and the 16 th Armored Cavalry Regiment (Training) from 1994 -1996. He served extended tours of duty in Germany, Spain, Panama, El Salvador and Mexico, with operational de- ployments to several other countries in the Western Hemisphere. Tourism Commitee

On December 2 the Tourism Committee met at AmCham. Thirteen members came to hear to Fer-nando Machado, Di-rector of Playa Tor-tuga Hotel & Beach Resort, talk about the hotel.
