Principal’s report
Thank you
I would like to thank Brett Price for taking on the role of Principal whilst I was on leave for the start of term 2. It is a great privilege
to have a senior executive team with such significant levels of experience and talent. John Parker and Aaron Perkins ably supported
Brett. Thanks must also go to Brendan Fox for taking on the role of Head Teacher Maths.
Our wonderful volunteers and student leaders
Thank you to the parents who volunteered over the weekend to sell lamingtons, (all sold out in record time), and to work in the
canteen. Thank you to Mariah and Mr Walker for your work in the canteen. Thank you to Mr Price, who returned from the Heron
Island at 2.00am on Saturday morning, then turned up at school on Saturday to help with the sausage sizzle. Finally, and very
importantly, thanks to the hospitality students, the students from our leadership initiative and other students who volunteered
their time on the weekend to help in the canteen and with the sausage sizzle. It is wonderful to see such hard working, community
minded and eager young adults making a positive contribution.
School building improvements update
So far, we have had classrooms in J block replastered and painted – making this space a lot brighter and fresh. We have had one
third of L block (classrooms and corridors) painted and plastered and this space is also looking a lot lighter and neater. One of the
home science kitchens is just waiting the arrival of the new cupboards and work on this will swiftly move towards completion. The
internal student toilets are just awaiting the delivery of some fittings and they will be completed. We will then move to refurbishing
the outside toilet blocks for students. On Tuesday, I met with the Assets Management to plan the next phase of our ongoing
refurbishment, which will see more classrooms upgraded, more student toilets refurbished and external painting and upgrades
occurring.
Trivia Night
The year 10 Leadership are in the process of organising a Trivia Night in Mid June possibly the 15th. The funds raised are initially
earmarked to support disadvantaged students unable to afford major excursions. The students did an outstanding Job at the
election day BBQ and the school’s future leadership is in safe hands.
Waratah Award
The Waratah awards first expedition is pencilled in for June27 and 28. The group to go first will be the senior group and will do an
overnighter from Evans Head to Ballina. Mr McMillan and Ms Smith will be supervising and students will receive instructions on
planning and packing for such an excursion.
ACE Reports
The ACE Reports for this term are now being completed and will be published by the end of the week. If, when comparing this
report to previous reports, you have any concerns, Please feel free to contact the school.
Athletics Carnival
The athletics carnival is on this Friday. All students are expected to attend, and remember, that participation is the key to enjoying
the day. The dressing in team colours has other benefits this year with House points and canteen vouchers up for the best dressed.
Thank you,
David Silcock
Canteen Volunteers Remember:

Careers Communication Corner
Year 10 (optional Year 11/12): I have booked a bus to Wollongbar TAFE ‘Open Day for schools’ on Thursday, 6 June. No longer a
TVET Day for only Year 10.This year TAFE have asked students to go online and complete a short survey by this Friday, 24 May, to
help plan the info available on the Open Day based on student interest. I have emailed to all students in Years 10/11/12 the survey
link, on your school emails for you to access. This day can help students decide to choose TAFE as part of Year 11 subjects or to
assist with leaving school after Year 10. Year 11/12 can look at options for 2020 to help future planning. Permission notes are on
Careers Office door in the box. Cost is subsidised at $1 per head. First 54 to pay AND return signed permission note together to
front office have priority.
Year 12 Careers Chats Terms 2/3: Last week I commenced withdrawing Year 12, two students at a time, to come and have a chat
with me in the Careers Office during study periods. These chats will continue until I confer with all Year 12 at least once. After this
time, students can book extra time if needed to update resumes, fill out applications e.g. accommodation, scholarships or ask for
any assistance. Parents/carers may also contact me by phone or email to arrange time to visit or seek advice by email or phone.
Year 9 Small group chats: This term I have arranged with Mr Fleming (Religion teacher) to send 4 students from each Religion
class, to my office for Careers Information, to talk about Resumes, Cover Letters, Job Interview Hints and Important websites. I
can also explain using Sentral information, how regular attendance and punctuality and good behaviour can be important
characteristics for future employment such as casual work and apprenticeships. These chats continue until I have seen all of Year
9 before the end of the year.

Lara Porter Young Archie Finalist 2019
Most people are familiar with the Archibald Prize that is a Portraiture painting competition, run each year by the NSW Art Gallery.
The gallery also runs a competition for young artists called ‘The Young Archie competition’, which invites budding artists between
the ages of 5 and 18 to submit a portrait. There are four age categories: 5-8 year olds, 9-12 year olds, 13-15 year olds and 16-18
year olds.
Alstonville High School had four students enter the competition across two age categories and we would like to congratulate Lara
Porter for becoming a finalist in the 16-18 year olds Young Archie Awards 2019.
All finalists are displayed at the Art Gallery of NSW held in conjunction with the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes exhibition
as well as online. https://www.artgallery.nsw.gov.au/prizes/young-archie/2019/
Here is her entry:
‘I’ve known Noel since the day I was born; he is one of my dad’s oldest friends and has become like a grandfather to me. Noel is always interested in me and my passions. My drawing is based on a photo I took when Noel and Dad were having a beer at home after work, just sitting and enjoying the view of the Nightcap Ranges. I admire their genuine, uncomplicated friendship’

Cows Create Careers 2019 competition Year 9
On Wednesday of week 2, year 9 agriculture students attended a seminar on the local dairy industry from Alicia Richards of
Subtropical Dairy NSW. Students learnt about careers and emerging technologies within the industry to promote engagement in
potential future work pathways. On Monday of week 3, students in year 9 agriculture classes received two dairy calves from Paul
Weir (dairy farmer and organic fertiliser producer at Tuncester). Students were taught the breeding pedigrees of the animals,
their birth history and information on running the dairy and rearing the calves. Students have been hand feeding and monitoring
the calves for weeks 3 and 4 as part of their project work.
Sydney Royal Easter Show Success
Nellie Witt, Year 10, travelled to the Sydney Royal Easter show in the Easter school holidays to exhibit beef cattle with remarkable
success. Nellie had the opportunity to work alongside some of the industry’s best at the biggest cattle show in Australia.
Throughout the week, Nellie competed in the national show with the following companies: Universal Livestock, Buckaroo
Brahmans, Toll Cattle that had been involved with Flemington Limousins.
On Friday, Nellie co-fitted the Grand Champion steer with Universal Livestock fitting company. The purebred Limousin grand
champion steer was bred by Toll Cattle & exhibited by St Johns College, Dubbo. Concluding a successful morning in the show ring,
Nellie spent her afternoon in the Brahman ring where she was awarded senior champion bull and a number of class ribbons on
behalf of Buckaroo Brahmans cattle stud, based in the Hunter Valley region.
On Sunday, Nellie assisted with the fitting of Flemington Limousin cattle and acquired another day of outstanding results.
Flemington Limousins were awarded Junior Champion Limousin Bull, Grand Champion Bull & Supreme Champion Limousin Exhibit
as well as receiving a number of class ribbons.
Nellie acknowledged that she was privileged to have had the opportunity, noting the wisdom that fellow members of the cattle
industry provided during the event. She has now returned home to help prepare cattle for Casino Beef Week & Lismore show later
this year.

Year 9 Agriculture and Year 11 Primary Industries - Primex 2019
Twenty students from years 9 and 11 participated in a tractor pull at Primex, in Casino on Friday, 17May. The activity involved
the elements of teamwork, which were exhibited by students during the event. This exciting experience involved pulling a 130 HP
tractor across a 40 metre distance whilst being timed. The time to beat was 45 seconds (Casino Primary School). Together as a
team we achieved a new time of 21.53 seconds in our first attempt. However, we anticipated that we could accomplish a better
result and decided to have a second attempt at the tractor pull. Together with all our effort and strength, we reached our goal of
achieving a better result of 18.65 seconds taking 2.88 seconds off from our previous result. The tractor pull was a fun activity that
was very interactive and demonstrated that teamwork can always achieve the best results. Personally, Primex was an interactive
and educational day out that involved understanding the characteristics of different breeds of cattle, types of machinery and
resources used in agricultural enterprises. However, my favourite experience at Primex was getting to know the people in the
community that assisted in enhancing our educational understanding of the agricultural industry.

Year 10 Textiles Technology
The Year 10 Textiles Technology class made another visit to Maranoa nursing home at the start of this term. The girls continue to
find it rewarding to work with the elderly in their local community. They enjoyed running the textile craft activity while telling
them a bit about themselves and learning about them too.
TAS continue to inspire our student body with project-based learning at Alstonville High School. The students are producing a vast
arrange of projects and the results featured throughout our TAS section are full of innovation and show the students creative flair
in various areas throughout our technologies.
