Teacher Appreciation WeekTeacher Appreciation Week was celebrated during the week of

May 6. If you see your child’s teacher(s) take the time to thank them, in some way, for all of the hard work they have put into educating your child this year. Our teachers not only put in the hard work necessary to educate each student, but they also truly care for each child that comes through our doors. It is impressive to see the great things going on in the BV classrooms!

Staff AppreciationThe Boyer Valley School would not run smoothly without the

great contributions of its support staff. I’d like to thank the secre-taries, nurse, technology coordinator, para-educators, custodians, groundskeepers, cooks, and bus drivers for all of their hard work throughout the year! We have a wonderful staff that goes above and beyond to help kids!

Counselor’sCORNERBy Keri Brosamle, MS/HS Guidance Counselor, [email protected] Office Hours: 8:00am-3:45pm M-F

Thank-You Scholarship DonorsI would like to personally thank all of the

businesses, organizations, and people that donated scholarships to our Boyer Valley Seniors. The cost of college is continually rising, which makes scholarships more and more important to students graduating from high school. This year 52 scholarships were awarded to 26 seniors for a total of $244,413.

Thank you so much for all of your continued support of our stu-dents, it is greatly appreciated!

Recent High School Graduates Finalizing Financial Aid: Students who just graduated from high

school who are planning to attend college this Fall need to make sure that they have completed their entire financial aid process. Students need to make sure they have accepted their financial aid awards, signed and submitted their Master Promissory Note (MPN), and completed financial aid entrance counseling on https://studentaid.ed.gov. Students will not receive financial aid until these steps are completed. For assistance with Financial Aid, please contact Steve Irvin at 1-515-402-4209 or [email protected]. He is highly knowledgeable about the entire financial aid process.

College Transcript Request from IWCC: It is the graduates’ responsibility to complete the online transcript request, so IWCC can send your transcript to the particular college you are enroll-ing at in the Fall. Here is the link for graduates to complete their college transcript requests: http://www.iwcc.edu/future_student/Records/transcripts.asp.

Thank-you notes: Students, please remember to write thank-you notes to the people/organizations you received scholarships from.

Improving Resumes and Gaining Experience

This summer I encourage all students to become more involved in their community by volunteering, working, or job shadowing. By volunteering & job shadowing not only do students help their com-munity and people in need, it also teaches students valuable work skills and helps them plan for their future. In addition, students can add those experiences to their resume, which looks great on college and scholarship applications.

Fall 2019- Online College Classes through IWCC:

Online college level classes are available for students in grades 10 (Second Semester only), 11 and 12, as well as TAG students in 10th grade. All online classes are dual-credit, which means they count for high school & college credit. The fee for these classes will be determined at a later date. There will be a manda-tory meeting for all students (and their parent/guardian) who are taking online classes in the Fall. This meeting will be held in the BV Auditorium on Thursday, August 15th @ 5:30pm. Amanda

O’Neal, from IWCC will be here to give you with information and to answer any questions you have about online classes. Students will also receive their textbooks for those classes, at that time. This is a very important meeting for students and their parent/guardian to attend. If you will not be able to attend this meeting, please contact me at the school at 712-643-2258 or [email protected].

School Supply Recycling ProgramWe accept donations at any time, for students in need of school

supplies. If you would like to donate (new or gently used) school supplies at any time, you can drop those off at the BVHS office and I will make sure they get to students in need (while supplies last). The main supplies that students need are: 2-pocket fold-ers, spiral notebooks, mechanical pencils, 3 ring binders (1 ½ - 3 inches), kleenex, hand sanitizer, highlighters, and backpacks. I cannot guarantee that I will have enough school supplies for everyone; however, I hope that this program is able to help some students in need.

We also accept clothing donations and our most needed items are: t-shirts, gym shorts, socks, winter coats/hats/gloves.

As always, if you have any questions/comments/concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at

712-643-2258 or [email protected]. I hope all of you have a wonderful summer!

4 | SUMMER 2019 District Newsletter

Summer is an exciting time for children to enjoy time with friends, a week at camp, a family vacation, or time at the pool. But for many children who receive free and reduced-price meals at school, summer can mean hunger. Just as learning does not end when school lets out, neither does a child’s need for good nutrition.

The Summer Food Service Program, administered by the Iowa Department of Education, provides nutritious meals and snacks to children in low-income areas during the summer months. There are many summer food service program feedings sites across the state of Iowa, however the program is still vastly under-utilized. The biggest barrier to children participating in the Summer Food Service Program is knowledge that feedings sites exist.

To locate feeding sites in our area go to:https://www.educateiowa.gov/pk-12/nutrition-programs-

Wellness Policy Assessment ReportThe Boyer Valley Board of Education is committed to the

optimal development of every student. The board believes for students to have the opportunity to achieve personal, academic, developmental, and social success, there needs to be a positive, safe, and health-promoting learning environment at every level, in every setting.

The school district provides a comprehensive learning environ-ment for developing and practicing lifelong wellness behaviors. The entire school environment, not just the classroom, shall be aligned with healthy school district goals to positively influence a student’s understanding, beliefs and habits as they relate to good nutrition and regular physical activity. In accordance with law and this belief, the board commits to following a Wellness Policy.

This policy can be found on the school’s website, http://www.boyer-valley.k12.ia.us/ under Board policy 507.9. The Wellness Policy committee welcomes input from parents, staff, community members and students. Contact the school nurse with any con-cerns or ideas.

TeamMates Strives to Reach GoldDunlap, IA — Every young person deserves to have someone

to turn to. The mission of the TeamMates Mentoring Program is to impact the world by inspiring youth to reach their full potential.

Right now, TeamMates is serving close to 8,000 youth in more than 140 communities across Nebraska, Kansas, Wyoming and Iowa. Mentors meet with their mentees one-on-one in school, once a week, during the academic year.

“We don’t do this for the accolades, but when your mentee does say ‘thank you’, it touches you to your core,” Mentor Giovanni Jones said.

Mentees can be nominated one of three ways. They can be nominated by a parent, a school staff member, or self-nomination. Mentors are not tutors, counselors, nor are they there to “fix” any-

thing— they’re there to be friends. Mentors are matched with mentees based on interests and life experiences.

The TeamMates Mentoring Program would love an opportunity to share the mission of the program with the community. With your help, we can be one step closer to serving 12,000 youth by 2020 and be considered part of the “Gold Standard” of school-based mentoring programs.

To schedule an interview about the TeamMates Mentoring Pro-gram, please contact Sarah Malone.

We are looking for mentors and new TeamMates board members. If you are interested in mentoring you can go to www.teammates.org and click on “Become A Mentor” to apply. If you are interested in serving on the board please contact Sarah Malone for more information.

Boyer Valley FFASpring & Summer is Ag TimeBy Nicole Behrendt, FFA Reporter

This spring has sure been busy for the Boyer Valley FFA. Earlier in April we sent sixteen members to the Iowa Leadership Conference in Ames. We had members compete in contests, attend workshops, and help with community service projects. Everyone had a great time at convention. When we came back we stayed busy, the chapter worked together to have the first ever Boyer Valley FFA petting zoo. There were ponies, rabbits, calves, donkies, sheep, goat, and a duck. The campus care kids loved it and we had a great turn out. A huge thank you to the 4-County fair for allowing us to use their gates. That’s not all, we just recently had our senior BBQ. We had great weather this year and served a lot of burgers to students and community members. Make sure to go like our Facebook page and follow our instagram and twitter to keep up with all our summer events as our chapter officers attend COLT on June 5, and we send our livestock judg-ing teams to contest!

Avoid Lyme Disease

Please wear long sleeves and bright colored clothing when camping, fishing or out in the woods. Due to the increase in rain we will see more than average ticks and mosquito’s this year!

Lyme disease is transmitted by the bite of an infected black legged tick or deer tick.

The symptoms of Lyme disease vary and may take anywhere from 3 days to a month to take effect. Early signs include chills, fatigue, fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, swollen lymph nodes, and in seventy to eighty percent of cases, a red and round rash like a bulls eye. The rash may feel warm to the touch and spread over a few days.

As the infection progresses, other symptoms can occur including new rashes, arthritis, dizziness, heart palpitations, loss of muscle toe, inflammation of brain and spinal cord. Lyme disease is treated with a course of 10-14 days of antibiotics.

1. Apply Tick Repellent as needed (ask parents to apply repellent)

2. Treat animals with flea and tick treatments3. Wear bright clothing when out camping, fishing or in the

wooded areas4. Check for ticks daily if outside

Host a Foreign Exchange StudentGreetings! My name is John Olerich and I am reaching out to

you as your schools IEC for foreign exchange students. We are currently looking for families to host students in your school. We have found that the best way to get things started in the com-munity is to have some one that works at the school host for a year. By doing so you allow the community to become familiar with the students and the program. Many households feel that if someone that works with the school can have success in hosting then maybe they too can host. We have several students that are looking to come to America next year and would love to be in your school and communities. My wife, who works at East Sac County as a teacher and head volleyball coach, and I have hosted ten students from this program and love the students and program so much that we are working with them trying to place students in our local communities in order to give them a chance at experiencing America, the Midwest way. Please talk with your spouse or signifi-cant other and consider hosting a student next year so that they can experience what life is really like in America, and so that your communities can learn more about a different culture. By opening your door you are helping others come forward and expand our culture and learn about a new one. Please feel free to contact me at or at 712.790.0811.

Thank you so much.

Back to School supplies needed for Mr. Hesman’s math courses

As calculators will be used in class and on assigned work, each student should have one of their own ( as loaners may not be available). Simple scientific calculators can be purchased at most stores for under $10. If a student plans to continue through the entire Boyer Valley math courses, I strongly suggest each indi-vidual get a graphing calculator of their own. I would recommend a TI-83, TI-83 plus, and TI-84 (range in price, but all near $100) or the Casio fx-9750G plus (around $50) as all of these are allowed on the ACT and SAT tests. The TI calculators are recommended for use by many colleges.

Postseason Bulldog Golf By Coach Gary Neilsen, HS Golf Coach

The Boyer Valley boys golf team finally put the season to a rest on Friday, May 24th. On Friday, May 10th the boys participated in the Sectional Golf tournament in Moville. The boys finished 4th overall in the team standings, missing out on advancing to the District round by only 11 strokes. Individual scoring for the day was: Grant Kenkel (82), Conlan Petersen (93), Adam Puck (96), Clay Roberts (107), Conor Kenkel (112), and Caden Neilsen (114). With scores of 86, and 93, Grant and Conlan qualified to move on as individuals to the District Round.

On Thursday May, 16th these 2 boys played in the District Round at Lakeside golf course in Fort Dodge. Conlan finished the day with a 84 for a 13th place finish overall. Grant finished the day with a 77, for 3rd overall and earning a trip to the 2019 State Golf Tournament in Newton, IA. The tournament was to be played on Thursday, May 23rd and Friday, May 24th. Grant shot a 94 on opening day of the tournament, but unfortunately was not able to play in day 2, due to weather (Newton received 2.5” of rain Friday morning, causing day 2 to be canceled). Since day 2 was canceled, the final results were those of the players at the end of Thursday’s round. Grant placed 35th individually out of the 58 golfers that took part in the the State Tournament.

Congratulations to Grant Kenkel and Conlan Petersen for their achievements this season, and with many young golfers on the Varsity team, we are looking forward to many good things in the future for the Boyer Valley boys golf team.
