1. Almanzor Descended from an Arab family ofYemen established in the region ofAlgeciras from the Muslim conquest of theIberian peninsula.He was the ruler of musulms in Al-andalus. He studied laws in Crdoba, andduring the caliphate of al-Hakam II, heldimportant administrative positions, suchas director of the mint (967 ) or intendant of the army ofGeneral Galib (972). In 976, the premature death of al-Hakam II stood infront of the Caliphate of Crdoba to Hisham II, a boy of onlyeleven years, a circumstance that took Almanzor, determinedand ambitious man, to seize the reins of power. That same yearhe was appointed tutor to the young Caliph, with the help ofhis mother.Subh, a captive Vascon wasprobably his lover. Two years later,in 978, and after having madeHisham II a political puppet, andafter having neglected to influentialfigures such as al-Mushafi andGalib, Almanzor had himself namedhajib, a sort of mayor of the palace,or prime minister, which allowed him to have an absoluteauthority over all the Iberian territory.
