...Bezhiwa Idakula, simply known as Bez, is an explosive soul singer with a truly unique voice and playful stage presence. In addition to an amazing performance at the 2012 ‘Super Sun Concert’ held at the Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, the Soul and Rock star had an outstanding year in 2012, from being inducted into the MTV Iggy Hall of Fame and premiering ‘Stupid Song’ ft Praiz on BET International to being honoured at the ‘Top 40 Personalities Under 40’ by Applause Africa magazine, amongst others.

Bez’s best selling song, ‘Stupid Song’, is indeed stupid. What, in the world, does the following mean? Ti nini ta na na, tololo tala or boju boju o. Stupid as it sounds, its got many of us swaying. It would seem the more meaningless a lyric, the more we love it. Pray, how senseless can a song with a lyric like ‘All I want is your waist’ be? Yet, this song is played at every party.

While Nigeria’s young male talents are besotted with the woman’s anatomy, which is all they sing about (a soon to become boring subject), Bez’s song offers a breath of fresh air in the midst of all the steamy gyrations in what we call hip-hop.

The boy‘s got talent, character and an identity far removed from all the orgies that pervade music of today. This is what I find enjoyable in the ‘Stupid Song’ album – rekindling the ra-ta-ta days of children at play.

Yemisi Suleiman caught up with the star and they went down twinkle, twinkle lane. Read the moonlight story on pp. 8,9&10.

Our Fashion today features some trends we are loving and a chic celeb we are loving even more.

UGONNA OMERUOWe are loving...

by - Jemi Ekunkunbor

Ugonna Omeruo is the young sassy designer who stormed the fashion scene a couple of years back. Ever since, she is proving to be a great advertisement for her works. She is a regular face on the red carpet, spotting outfits from her label, House of Nwocha. Although she is seen once in a while in long dresses, the short ones seems to be her favourite and we are her loving her for her creativity and sense of style.

/ April 7, 20136

Ugonna rocks colour blocking trend in this pink and aqua dress. She makes a statement with this chunky neckpiece.

It is on rare occasion we see Ugonna step out in a hat gingerly perched on her head. Ugonna reinvents herself here in this blue dress with fuschia pink accessories.

Ugonna in this red, frilly floral dress looks so girlie. A red dress with matching red accessories is just hot, hot.

Lace blouse and mini, layered skirt becomes Ugonna. Cinching the waist with this tiny black belt makes her waistline a delight to the eyes. She finishes this look with matching peep toes.

This damask skirt and sexy, lacy blouse is just so smart and chic.

Trends for MEN

TOP5by - Yemisi Suleiman

Looking good is not a woman’s prerogative anymore. Men can look as fashionable pairing different options and not wearing the same boring shirts and ugly trousers all year round. Every year, fashion trends for men are listed out, but since many men rarely follow fashion norms, all this style news eludes them. So to be in line with this season’s trend, check out what fashionable men are wearing now s seen on the runways.

FASH ION

The sleeveless blazer is not the easiest trend to pull off but the fact that so many designers featured this type of blazer/jacket in their collections suggests that there may actually be a place for them this year. Best way to wear is to layer them over shirts.

Blue hues proved to be extremely popular on the high fashion runways - ranging from bright cobalt/aqua shades to more subtle, calm tones. So for those that already have a wardrobe full of navy and sky blue, there should be something that will still appeal.

After struggling to be on the fashion radar for some lime, it is lime for the tailored shorts suit to shine. It is hot on the runways and celebrities tat can pull this queer trend off. Tkeep them well filled at Ihc waisl (they should be able to be worn withoul a belt) and make sure they closely follow the lines of your thighs, stopping an inch or two above the knee.

Metallics is one hot trend for men now and there is no denying the fact that the use of metallics in fabrics and garments adds not only an interesting colour and tonal element to any look, but also a textural aspect, something that is fresh and new. It will work very well as separates, if dressed down with more subtle items.

And one of the biggest pattern trends proving to be extremely popular for S S13 is the return of stripes. Although the Breton stripe and nautical inspired pieces continue to remain a popular choice amongst fashion-conscious men, this season stripes are being adopted in various ways.

011HEALTHY LIVINGHEALTH

Hello my dear readers, today we continue from the previous edition, on the famous issue every woman faces: Exercise Versus My Hair challenge. As you have seen from the previous edition (march 10) it is possible to work out and still have nice hair. I agree it’s not easy, but it is doable. Remember nothing good comes easy and looking good and feeling great is a wonderful thing once you can pull it off. Thankfully yours truly is here to do all the hard work and tell you how to go about this task as stress-free as possible! So here’s how:

Last but certainly not least, keep your mane under control by opting to work out in cooler environments. Getting your burn on in a cooler environment can make a difference when it comes to the amount of sweat you build up on your roots. So ladies get up under the AC or a fan during your indoor workout to keep your scalp a little less sweaty.I have worked out my entire hair life (through relaxers, natural hair…kinky and fro-ed out, and blow outs….long and sleek). And I can say is that the key to working out and maintaining lovely locks is: styling products. With natural hair, leave-in conditioner is my BFF. The more the better…before, during, and certainly after workouts. And with natural blown out hair don’t opt out on the heat protectant or anti-reversion styling products. They not only protect the hair from heat and environmental damage but they also lead to a better blow out. Remember, the better the blow out the better it will hold up during jumping jacks.

A few of you have asked me what I’m doing with my hair while it’s straight and I’m working out. I’m no expert at being a straight natural and to be honest my roots are not perfectly straight, so there has been some reversion. It’s something I accept and that happens when exercising heavily.

I always believe in putting your hair up in a high bun or ponytail when working out. Not only will your hair be out of your face, because the tips are packed high up into one the likelihood of it touching your sweat is considerably low hence keeping it dry and not affected by the exercise. I’ve tried this it works. I’ve also found that putting the hair up in 2-3 buns is alternative method, it keeps the roots tauter. If your hair is shorter, you may have to do 5-6 buns instead.

I always try to wear a scarf that will absorb the sweat around my edges (temple to temple) in addition to

pulling it back. I know some of you are probably cringing, but having it on while you are heavily sweating for 30 minutes won’t kill your edges.

I’ve recently been wearing a linen head wrap that I have. It soaks up sweat. I have tried satin scarves, but they get soaked easily and then the sweat has nowhere to sit but on my hair. So in my experience and opinion I would say a linen or lycra head wrap.

Do not let your ends come anywhere near your face or any sweat. It’s much easier to hide puffy roots than it is puff ends. You may want to braid your hair up and pin it. But remember not to pin too close to your roots as that just puts the sweat on it directly.

However you secure your hair prior to your workout, leave it alone until it dries completely. So when you are done with your workout stay in a cool room for 20 minutes and then wrap your hair and have a shower. Your hair would have recovered during that cool down period.

Make sure you start out your straight hair with good anti reversion products. Aveda Pomade has been my go to product. It really helps to keep my hair from going “poofy”. Another bestseller is Mizani H2O night time treatment. With this a little goes a long way and you see the results immediately. It totally reverses the hair to how it was pre-workout.

You can still work out. Please do not stop working out entirely because of your hair. Avoid the rain, don’t go swimming, but please work out. If you don’t want to do strenuous cardio, try to do some yoga or weight lifting instead. Remember, the closer you get to wash day, the more intense your workouts can become.

That’s about all I’ve got ladies. Nothing ground breaking, nothing earth shattering. But it’s been working for me and I know it will work for you too. Feel free to share your own routines for working out with straight natural hair, just email me at [email protected] I would love to hear from you.

2. Use MoisturizersYour face should be moisturized with a good moisturizing lotion regularly to prevent dryness and wrinkles. It’s critical that you wear a moisturizer around your lip and mouth. Moisturizers replace the lost moisture in your skin and plump the skin cell, reducing lines and wrinkles around mouth and lips.

3. Avoid Over Sun ExposureRegular sun protection is the best way to get rid of deep fine lines and folds around the mouth. Avoiding sun exposure can really help to delay the formation of fine wrinkles around the mouth and lip wrinkles. Sun exposure damages the skin cells immensely and causes the collagen under the skin to break down and deteriorate. The deterioration of collagen in the skin increases wrinkles and sagging, around the mouth and the eyes. In order prevent deep wrinkles around mouth it is best to apply good screen lotion before you step out.

4. Exfoliate RegularlyExfoliating is another tip to get rid of wrinkles around mouth. Exfoliation will remove the dead skin cells that make your mouthwrinkles. Try to exfoliate your skin twice every week using natural beauty products like sugar, strawberries, avocado, bananas or lemon. It will remove smile lines around mouth naturally. Let me know how you get on after 6weeks, remember its a long termbattle so don’t expect to see results immediately.Best wishes, Teri M

Thanks so much Teri. Wil do just that. And update you. Stay blessed. - Jola

Good afternoon Teri,How can I maintain a beautiful skin? - Jola

Dear Jola, Thanks for writing in. Smile lines are considered as

one of the first signs of aging, effective skin care will help reduce wrinkles and fine lines that form around the

mouth and lips. Also saving your skin from extreme change in temperatures can prevent further wrinkling around the mouth.Below are some immediate tips, also if you smoke stop immediately!

1. Hydrate Your SkinSince dry skin is a cause of wrinkles, hydrate your skin by drinking plenty of water as a natural remedy to reduce wrinkles and lines around mouth. For looking younger, beautiful and reducing wrinkles and fine line around mouth, try to drink at least two liters of water everyday. Drinking adequate amounts of water will help keep your body hydrated and help to get rid of wrinkles around mouth.

you have trees to climb. It was just fun growing up as a kid in Jos. Musically, a lot of people would play music for the fun of it. You hear of a new guy in town, you go check out the guy; go back home and practice to sing like him. Sometimes, you go to a garden and some musicians are playing, and you hang out with them. With time, you find out that you are building your social circle around musicians and you are just honing your skills continuously. Eventually, you discover that you have honed perfectly and can go commercial. I think, that is one of the most important things about artistes that come from Jos.

You are from Nasarawa State. What fond memories do you have of it?

A lot of people do not know much about Nasarawa State. When I go around the world and people ask me where I’m from, I tell them I’m a Nigerian from Nasarawa State. First of all, Nasarawa State is the next-big-thing when it comes to resources. It’s the next big thing after oil and the more people start focusing on solid minerals, we can have alternative means of income for the country. There are loads of things I want to do with the youth in Nasarawa State; adding more value to their lives by creating more opportunities for the youth in

school and more.

If you have a word for the governor, what would that be?

The governor has been doing a lot and it’s great to see somebody coming in, seeing the way things are and trying to create something amazing from it. We have a university in Nasarawa State which is really great. I think there are more things to be done and people like us, sons of the soil, can join hands with the government to create something really amazing for the state.

Let’s talk about your Europe/America tour. What is it all about?

Most of the time, musicians just want to play around the world. It’s great to be able to be invited for a couple of gigs. We were invited to play at the Colombia University, New York for their African Economic Forum. There is a place called the Rock Wood Music Hall. That’s a great venue in New York that has booking agents coming through with a lot of booking; we will be playing there as well.

That usually turns out into more gigs. There was a time we played in South Africa. We went there for one gig and when we got in on Sunday and played that

Sunday. By the time we finished, we were booked for like three or four more gigs during the week. So, it is a process; you go, you do two or three and find doors open for you to do more and you keep going.

I will also be recording my new album in New York, shooting a video and then recording with an artiste, Ambassador, who is a rapper from Ghana but lives in Brooklyn. So, there is a lot to do.

What should your fans expect from your new album?

Yes. Just for the fun of it. They will hit the record butMy new album is taking a bit of departure from the sound that they know Bez for. First of all, I have evolved into another level, so it’s not a complete departure. It’s just a small evolution. I think I’ve found a stronger voice, so that will be very prominent in my music. I’m putting a more African sound in my music as well, shielding it with a bit of mainstream and Rock while keeping the Soul genre very much present in the music. So, it will be much more exciting. The album and the new music will be very exciting for my fans.

Musically, is there any musician you look up to? Who do you admire? Who would you have actually learnt from?

There are a lot of musicians that are my colleagues in the industry that I admire. For example, Tu Face, who is first of all, a really humble person; but this is somebody who knew exactly what he wanted to do from the word go and he pursued it. I’m sure he had loads and loads of setbacks but he just kept on. It’s amazing to see his growth over the years and he is growing stronger and stronger.

Those are the kind of people I admire; that you can look up to them and say: ‘This person was able to do it and he wasn’t able to do it in just a year or two’. You could see that there is a period of paying dues; there was a period of growth and there was this period when he became a mega super star. So, those are the kind of people I look up to.

You always wear a fedora. Is that your style signature?

Apart from the fact that I think sometimes it makes me look cooler (laughs). First of all, I wear prescription lenses (medicated lenses) so, I thought if I am going to wear glasses, why not make it look really nice. I thought to use fashionable frames and then the Fedora; I used to wear face caps before. I had different types of caps but at a point, I just settled with the Fedora.

It works for me and it gives me that extra look. My style could be very laid back; sometimes, jeans with t-shirts, beads, hats with glasses. I just jazz it up to make it look interesting. To me, it’s just how I feel like expressing myself. I am not so fussy about wearing too many things.

Do you have a designer that makes clothes for the red carpet for you?

In Lagos, I am very good friends with MAI so, he does a lot of stuff for me. Orange Culture does for me as well. I have a lot of people that I have worked with randomly but these are the more consistent ones I use.

You were one of those honoured at the ‘40 Personalities Under 40’. What was it all about?

By Applause Africa magazine; they had an edition on the ‘Top 40 Personalities Under 40’ making a mark in the society and I was on the cover for that edition. Once again, to be recognized in an industry as one of the leaders is amazing. That way, you know you are doing the right thing and people are noticing. They flew us over to New York for the launch and I performed as well at the show.

Apart from music, what else do you do?Music is (not) the only thing I do. I do advocacy as

well for Friends Africa. I am working with them; teaching people how to protect themselves against malaria, tuberculoses and AIDS. I am also working as a board member of Ovie Brume Foundation. Again, I have great passion for education because, when I was in secondary school, I lost my dad and somebody paid my fees throughout secondary school and also part of university (a lot of people assisted). So, I thought to myself, where would I be now if people didn’t give me that opportunity to finish my education. So, I always think of working with people to give back to society and help when it comes to education. That is what I do with education.

That is what I do with education.

music is not the only thing I do. I do advocacy as well for friends africa. I am working with them; teaching people how to protect themselves against malaria, tuberculoses and aIds.

Dear Momodu,Sugar does not cause cancer but sug-

My advise: Stay off or limit drastically your intake of this legal white substance especially refined sugar and be vigilant, “sugar is vary omnipresent”.

those late nights. ‘ It’s okay’, he said. Just come back Tuesday instead of Wednesday. ‘Thanks babes’, I quickly replied. Certainly wasn’t about to start arguing.... Getting his go ahead without complaints was good enough...what difference did one day make?? Called Rolake back, we were ready to roll!

She arranged everything- called her agent who got us visas and good seats on Qatar airlines business class, booked our hotel stay at the Marriott near the marina using my Rewards number to get us a good discount and arranged for our airport shuttles to and fro. By evening of the next day, all was in place and all I had left to do was pack a few clothes in my Louis Vuitton luggage and put my cards - debit, credit and frequent flyer in my matching handbag. Travelling must be in style, no matter how short the trip... it gets you best treatment by airport and flight staff who can only distinguish pedigree from what they see before them. I knew Rolake and I would spend a lot of time talking... she needed to vent - and so I decided to surprise her with a stress bursting session at my favorite spa in Bur, Dubai so I quickly booked that, too.

Flight day came and off we happily went, each looking forward to uninterrupted fun with a genuine and time tested friend. I’d kissed my husband bye and laughed when he’d said ‘ stay away from the Souk’, shaking my head. How could I? Even he knew that was a tough call oo... Especially traveling with Rolake, who could actually take up residence in the Souk if allowed to...lol!

The lounge at Doha was a delight, as always, the transit time seamless and quite enjoyable. Rolake had started to regale me with her husband’s exploits and her house-help’s shenanigans since we took off from Lagos and all through the flight. I let her. She needed me as her vent receiving surface, just as I did to her from time to time as well. She knew without a doubt her secrets were safe with me as I knew mine were with her. We were not ‘Lagos’ friends. We’d been friends since primary school and survived many battles together. She knew I would be non judgmental and give advice from my heart, contemplating her issues the way I would my own. Generally, on domestic staff, once they start to misbehave, I simply fire. That’s usually true colors coming out and I do not give opportunity for them to repeat misbehavior, considering past experiences I’d had trying to ‘convert’ misbehaving domestic staff, all the while still paying salaries during the misbehavior....

Rolake went on to work issues and we spent a lot of time on that. By the time we were through, it was five am and we were in Dubai, at the Marriott. Both exhausted, we each retired to our rooms and slept till three pm! Both rested, we headed for the gold souk for some ‘retail therapy’ and marveled at the number of Nigerians we bumped into there. The owner of the store we eventually purchased some pieces from actually con-fessed to us he had two Nigerian wives while we were chit chatting and while he spoke, a couple walked in.

With all the awesomeness it possesses, beautiful Dubai is THE place for a quick three day weekend, sunny getaway with close friends or for just beating a hasty retreat into relaxation when stress of traffic, power, domestic help, etc start getting to you! The key airlines that go - Emirates, Qatar and now Etihad still treat Nigerians with some modicum of respect and regardless your class of flight, you can be sure to receive pampering that beats the European airlines hands down. Seven hours away, stressless visa procedures, weather that cooperates most of the time and shopping that includes favorite British, American and European stores, what’s not to love about this beautiful city that rose from the sand???

Rolake (not real name), my best friend from childhood called. Bottom line, she direly needed a break or she would go nuts; did I fancy a Thursday to Tuesday trip to Dubai? Quickly, I called hubby to seek permission. Rolake was well known to him so I didn’t have too much explaining to do...plus he was really busy at work at the moment, working late with his team to meet some deadlines.
