History’s Greatest Event!
By Fr. Mark Haydu, LC © 2020 Liguori Publications
Today we celebrate the most important mystery of our faith, the greatest event in the Bible and all of history. Nothing before the events of Easter morning contains their full meaning, and nothing after makes sense without them.
Jesus’ conquering of death validated all of his preaching, teaching, and miracles. Now his doctrine of love, forgiveness, faith, and baptism is confirmed, as is God’s definitive revelation for humanity’s salvation. In short, the resurrection proves that Jesus wasn’t simply a good man, a wise teacher, or a revolutionary. He was all of those things and more—he was the Son of God.
Without the rising of Jesus from the dead, you cannot explain his appearing to the women, apostles, disciples, and crowds before his ascension. You cannot explain the transformation of the timid and baffled apostles into powerful preachers or the conversion of St. Paul from a murdering Pharisee to a persecuted Christian. Without the truth of the resurrection, you cannot explain the courage of any of the martyrs. Indeed, the Romans and Jews took these martyrs seriously. And if either group could have produced a
body of evidence or a convincing explanation to debunk the story, they would have.
So today, set aside your Lenten focus on the mocked, beaten, and buried Jesus. Celebrate the resurrection. Christ the Lord—and Christianity—is a reality and a force. Rejoice! Reflect on the truth and power of this day, and allow God’s Son to open the tombs of your heart and life. +
A Word from Pope Francis Today…we see that our journey is not in vain.…Why do
you think that everything is hopeless, that no one can take away your own tombstones? Why do you give in to
resignation and failure? Easter is the feast of tombstones taken away, rocks rolled aside.
—Easter Vigil homily, April 20, 2019
Ponder and Pray
Do I keep my sights on the Lord all year, not just during Christmas and Easter?
Do I take comfort that Jesus became human so that one day I may join him in his resurrection?
Lord, your resurrection pierces the darkness of doubt and fear. May the power of your resurrection help me to
deepen my love for you and all people.
—From Mindful Meditations for Every Day of Lent and Easter, Rev. Warren J. Savage and Mary Ann McSweeny
Sunday, April 12, 2020 • Easter Sunday, the Resurrection of the Lord
Easter Sunday 2020—Suggestions Matthew 28:1-10 or John 20:1-9
Liturgical color is white/gold. This is the most festive of all days. A white linen table cloth for your meal is most appropriate for today. In fact, linen itself is a symbol of resurrection. We learned on Passion Sunday that “taking the body, Joseph wrapped it in clean linen...” Fashioned from flax fiber, authentic linen is very strong and durable. Fragments of dyed fabric discovered in a prehistoric cave were found to be woven linen from wild flax dating back something like 36,000 years ago.
Easter Vigil with Fr. Anh Our Parish will Live Stream video of our Easter Vigil
Liturgy You will find a link on the Parish Facebook Page www.facebook.com/AllSaintsPuyallup. Look for a link

Easter Vigil – April 11 at 8:30pm
Easter Greeting: Greet each other with “Alleluia, the Lord is risen!” and answer “He is risen indeed!”
Sunrise: Get up early, while it is still dark, to watch the sunrise with your family. Read the Easter Sunday Gospel together, and share an Easter breakfast including hard boiled eggs. Perhaps an Easter food like hot cross buns could be part of today’s menu.
Easter Morning Mass: If you didn’t go online to watch the Vigil last night, watch the Easter morning by linking into the Archdiocese of Seattle Facebook page or you could find many other live stream Easter Mass being done around our Archdiocese and World.

Times for the Easter Sunday Liturgies livestream:
Easter Vigil – April 11 at 8:30pm
Easter Sunday – April 12 at 8:30am
Easter Sunday is when we all renew our baptismal promises—an opportunity to get out family albums to look at baptism pictures and certificates.
New clothes: New converts are traditionally baptized at Easter, wearing new white garments to symbolize their new life. If your family has new Easter outfits, share with your children where this tradition came from. Share on line or by phone calls with relatives and friends on Easter. Tell them what your family is doing for Easter this year -- maybe next year they’ll join in.
Whatever traditions you keep, remember that for believers, Easter is a
celebration that really never ends.

Easter Sunday Readings
Acts 10:34a, 37–43
This man God raised on the third day and granted that he be visible…to us, the witnesses chosen by
God in advance.
Colossians 3:1–4
or 1 Corinthians 5:6b–8
Think of what is above, not of what is on earth. For
you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ
in God.
John 20:1–9
Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and be-
lieved.
Divine Mercy Sunday Sunday, April 19th, 2020
