KISSES FROM KATIE by Katie Davis Monday, February 27, 2012 Led by Rev. DeAndrea Dare AN INVISIBLE THREAD by Laura Schroff and Alex Tresniowski Monday, March 26, 2012 Led by Rev. DeAndrea Dare What would cause an eighteen- year-old old senior class president and homecoming queen from Nashville, Tennessee, to disappoint her parents by forgoing college, break her little brother’s heart, lose all but a handful of her friends (because the rest of them think she has gone off the deep end), and break up with the love of her life, all so she could move to Uganda, where she knew only one person but didn’t know any of the language? A passion to make a difference. Katie Davis leſt over Christmas break her senior year for a short mission trip to Uganda and her life was turned completely inside out. She found herself so moved by the people and children of Uganda that she knew her calling was to return and care for them. Katie, a charismatic and articulate young woman, is in the process of adopting thirteen children in Uganda, and she completely trusts God for daily provision for her and her family. Led by Rev. Jason M. Jones When Laura Schroff first met Maurice on a New York City street corner, she had no idea that she was standing on the brink of an incredible and unlikely friendship that would inevitably change both their lives. As one lunch at McDonald’s with Maurice turns into two, then into a weekly occurrence that is fast growing into an inexplicable connection, Laura learns heart-wrenching details about Maurice’s horrific childhood. As their friendship grows, Laura offers Maurice simple experiences he comes to treasure: learning how to set a table, trimming a Christmas tree, visiting her nieces and nephew on Long Island, and even having homemade lunches to bring to school. We have grown used to the battles over Jesus—whether he was human or divine, whether he could do miracles or just inspire them, whether he even existed. Much of the church defends tradition, while critics take shots at the institution and its beliefs. But what if these debates have masked the real story of Jesus? What if even Jesus’s defenders have been so blinded by their focus on defending the church’s traditions that they have failed to grapple with what the New Testament really teaches? Bible scholar, Anglican bishop, and bestselling author N. T. Wright summarizes a lifetime of study of Jesus and the New Testament in order to present for a general audi- ence who Jesus was and is. In Simply Jesus, we are invited to hear one of our leading scholars introduce the story of the carpenter’s son from Nazareth as if we were hearing it for the first time.

What would cause an eighteen-year-old old senior class president and homecoming queen from Nashville, Tennessee, to disappoint her parents by forgoing college, break her little brother’s heart, lose all but a handful of her friends (because the rest of them think she has gone off the deep end), and break up with the love of her life, all so she could move to Uganda, where she knew only one person but didn’t know any of the language? A passion to make a difference. Katie Davis left over Christmas break her senior year for a short mission trip to Uganda and her life was turned completely inside out. PASTORAL COUNSELING AVAILABLE

“RE-MEMBERING LIVES”: A GRIEF SUPPORT GROUPMondays, January 23-February 20, 6:30-8:00pmFacilitator: Rev. Dr. Mitzi Ellington, DMin. (see article above)

Experiencing the death of a loved one brings many changes to a person’s life. Death does not mean the end of the relationship nor is grief about “getting over it”. How do we hold on to the memories and the joy of the past? How do we feel our sadness and live in the present? How do

we anticipate the future with hope? What do we do with our stories of loss and love? These stories matter. Persons will be invited to share their stories and discover how the stories and lives of our loved ones can and do continue to hold meaning for our lives.

Stephen’s Ministry

Are You Experiencing a “Winter” in Your Life?In addition to the cold weather outside, many people experience “winters” in their personal lives. A recent loss through death, divorce, or relocation may leave them feeling lonely. A hospitalization, cancer diagnosis, or ongoing medical problems may leave them feeling isolated. The loss of a job, the fear of layoffs, or a financial setback can devastate one’s self-esteem. Family and personal struggles may leave them with nowhere to turn for support.

If you are going through a difficult time, our Stephen Ministers can bring God’s warm love back into your life. They provide confidential, one-to-one Christian care. They will meet with you privately on a weekly basis to listen, support, and encourage you, to pray with and for you, and to walk with you for the duration of your crisis.

Aledo UMC offers Pastoral Counseling to the Aledo Community. The Rev. Dr. Mitzi Ellington is avail-able to see individuals and couples over the age of 18 on Thursdays from 12:00-7:00 pm by appointment only. Fees are based on

income. For appointments, call 817-907-3243. Rev. Dr. Mitzi Ellington is a pastoral counselor in private practice at FUMC in Fort Worth. She received her clinical training and a Doctor of Ministry degree in Pasto-

ral Theology and Pastoral Counseling from Brite Divinity School. Mitzi is ordained, and her experi-ence includes over 20 years of hospital chaplaincy as a Board Certified Chaplain.
