AZC SECONDARY SCHOOL

The much awaited opening of the new secondary school happened during the holidays. Reports from people who attended the opening said it was a thoroughly enjoyable night and the new buildings are very impressive.

Year 4 was lucky to get a tour of the new building from Miss Kalaizis and the Year 9 students.

‘Wow’ and ‘hectic’ were some of the words used to describe the building by the Year 4 students.

The new building has amazing facilities: a multipurpose hall; science labs; food technology lab; art room; and a music room to name, but a few.

I know that I cannot wait to get to high school and use the facilities in the new building.

Hussein Salim, Year 4

PaymentsParents are reminded that all payments should be made by direct deposit, Bpay or through the EFTPOS facility at AZC.

The reason for this procedure is twofold:

- AZC does not want to handle or hold cash on the premises; and

- AZC wants to minimise any bank charges for parents who are withdrawing cash from ATMs to make a fees payment.

AZC appreciates your cooperation in this matter.

A Bad Day at School

It's Monday morning at 7:01.You’re still half asleep; your homework’s half done.Your shower is cold; your oatmeal’s dry.Your mother forgets to kiss you good-bye.You’re walking to school; it’s zero degrees.Your fingers won’t work; your toes and ears freeze.Your zipper is stuck; your left sneaker squeaks. You walk in the school and you see a big store. You slip on the steps then you trip in the hall. The gym door is locked and the library's the same. Then the principal greets you by the wrong name.Tara Youssef - Y3

COLLEGE UNIFORMParents are reminded that they must purchase available uniform items from AZC and missing/out-of-stock items from Yeronga School Uniforms (900 Canterbury Rd, Roselands).

There is concern that some families are substituting College uniform items by purchasing items from unapproved suppliers. Specific concerns are boys’ trousers, school shirts, AZC caps and tracksuit pants.

Parents can save themselves a lot of money by ensuring their child’s name is marked clearly on all pieces of clothing.

NUT FREE ZONE

Mohamed Soummaka, who is in Year 1 in 2012, has a severe nut allergy. To prevent a medical emergency, there can be no nuts or foods con-taining nuts in the school.

This includes, especially Nutella and hazelnut products, and anything con-taining tree nuts.

Al Zahra College and the Soummaka family appreciate your assistance in making our College a nut free zone.

Thank you in advance for your complete support.

ASTRO AHMAD’S AMAZING FACTSHave you seen Venues and Jupiter lately?Waking up at 5:30 a:m to go swimming training is usually a drag for me, but throughout July, it has been a treat because I was able to see the planets Venus and Jupiter dazzling in the morning sky.

I noticed that Jupiter looked much smaller than Venus. This is because it’s much further away from Earth. However, this gas giant is so big that Venus or Earth can fit inside it 1000 times. Did you know that just like Saturn and Uranus, Jupiter also has rings? They are faint and are only able to be seen when Jupiter passes in front of the Sun. These rings are named Gossamer, Main and Halo. Jupiter also has 50 moons.

Unlike Jupiter, Venus has no moons. It’s also known as Earth’s evil twin sister, because it’s almost the same size as Earth and is made up of almost the same materials. However,

it’s a deadly planet. Its atmosphere is filled with poisonous gasses, like carbon dioxide, and because it’s much closer to the sun than Earth, it’s very hot. Therefore, no living thing can ever survive there. Did you know that one day on Venus is longer than one year on Earth? Confused???......This is because it takes Venus 224 Earth days to orbit the sun (which is how we measure a year). However, it takes 243 Earth days to rotate on its axis (which is how we measure a day).

If like me, you had a chance to see Venus and Jupiter before sunrise, then you may have noticed a little star next to the planets. This star is called Aldabaran, an Arabic word that means “the follower”. Aldabaran is a red giant star that is 65 light years away from earth. Although it looks little to us, it’s much bigger than our sun and all the plants in our solar system put together. To give you an idea of how big it really is, imagine Aldabaran is a watermelon and our sun as a watermelon seed.

So fellow space rangers, if you wake up an hour or two before sunrise, you too can see Venus and Jupiter throughout August. You can’t miss them, as they are the brightest objects in our sky. In fact, Venus is the third brightest object in Earth’s sky after the sun and the moon.

For detailed information about what you can see in the Earth’s sky each day and night, visit the Tonight/ EarthSky website. http://earthsky/tonight.

Until next time, this is Astro Ahmad taking you to infinity and beyond…

Ahmad Sabra (Year 4)

STATE OF ORIGIN

The 2012 State of Origin series was the 31st time the annual best-of-three state of origin was played.

Game I was played at Melbourne's sold out Etihad Stadium and won by Queensland. Its television broadcast watched by more than 2.5 million viewers, rating it as the most-watched State of Origin broadcast since the introduction of OzTAM ratings in 1999. New South Wales' series-equaling win in Game II, played at Sydney's sold out ANZ Stadium, set a new TV ratings record for most-watched second game of any series in State of Origin history. The decider, Game III was played at Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium and was won by Queensland. This game set a new record for the highest television audience in Australia for a rugby league match since the introduction of the OzTam ratings system in 2001.

The opening game for the New South Wales Blues saw Todd Carney, James Tamou, Tony Williams and Jamie Buhrer make their debuts, with all either having previous interna-tional representative or grand

final experience. Michael Jen-nings was the first Origin player

in 29 years to be selected to the  squad after playing in the reserve grades, where he was dropped from the Penrith Pan-thers for one game due to poor off-field discipline. Jamie Buhrer from the Manly Sea Ea-gles was generally the shock selection in the squad, only playing for City Origin earlier in the year as his sole representative honour and was yet to play 50 games for his club. But he was selected due to his big game experience, having played in Manly’s winning 2011 NRL Grand Final team, and his high utility value to replace their recognised utility in Kurt Gidley who was unable to play in the 2012 series because of a season-long injury. Only 9 of the selected 17 players were incumbent from Game Three in 2011.

Queensland's selected side for the first game was largely unchanged from the 2011 se-

ries, with only four changes made. Their only debutant was Matt Gillett from the Brisbane Broncos to play a utility role from the bench. It was hooker Cameron Smith's first match and series as the permanent cap-tain for his state, having previ-ously filled in for the role in ‘The Immortal’ Darren

Lockyer's absence.Khalil Youssef - Y4
