RAYANNE & HASSAN REPRESENT AZC AT

STATE CROSS COUNTRYRayanne Makki and her younger brother, Hassan, represented AZC and ASISSA for a second time at the Sate Cross Country Championships that were conducted at Eastern Creek in June.

Both students, along with the AZC regional cross country squad, had been training with Mr Jessurun since early May.

Well done, Rayanne and Hassan!

MOBILE PHONESStudents who bring a mobile phone or other electronic device to College must leave it at the Main Office when they arrive. The item can be collected on their departure. If the device is required for use in the class-room, then the teacher will advise the Main Office.

READY TO LEARNIt is absolutely essential that

students arrive at school, ready to learn. This won’t happen if students do not have adequate sleep (10-12 hours, depending on age) or have unhealthy eating habits.

If parents don’t have these two factors right, then learning and personal achievement will be a ‘hit or miss’ affair.

How much sleep do your children have each night?

INTERSCHOOL SPORT

Congratulations to the Primary Girls’ futsal team who defeated Belfield College 3-2 in a gripping final at Liverpool. By far the dominant team in the competition, the AZC girls rose to the occasion to make it a clean sweep to date. Well done, boys, on your great football to be futsal champions in 2012, defeating Green Valley 7-1.

PaymentsParents are reminded that all payments should be made by direct deposit, Bpay or through the EFTPOS facility at AZC.

The reason for this procedure is twofold:

- AZC does not want to handle or hold cash on the premises; and

- AZC wants to minimise any bank charges for parents who are withdrawing cash from ATMs to make a fees payment.

AZC appreciates your cooperation in this matter.

Drama Club Last year at Al Zahra College, Miss Sadruddin came up with a fabulous idea to start a drama club.

The first play that took place was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in which I played the main part which was Charlie. It was a great success.

In 2012, the teachers decided two have two drama clubs, a junior and a senior club. This was all due to the popularity and interest that evolved from last year.

Drama is a great way to show off students’ confi-dence and talent and let me tell you something. Al Zahra College has a lot of talented children.

The junior drama club meet every Thursday at lunchtime to brainstorm ideas together for the up-coming annual performance. We also act out some scripts with different expressions involved. It’s full of great entertainment and a whole heap of fun.

This year the junior drama club is doing a production of the Gruffalo.

It’s sure to be brilliant.

COLLEGE UNIFORMParents are reminded that they must purchase available uniform items from AZC and missing/out-of-stock items from Yeronga School Uniforms (900 Canterbury Rd, Roselands).

There is concern that some families are substituting College uniform items by purchasing items from unapproved suppliers. Specific concerns are boys’ trousers, school shirts, AZC caps and tracksuit pants.

Parents can save themselves a lot of money by ensuring their child’s name is marked clearly on all pieces of clothing.

NUT FREE ZONE

Mohamed Soummaka, who is in Year 1 in 2012, has a severe nut allergy. To prevent a medical emergency, there can be no nuts or foods con-taining nuts in the school.

This includes, especially Nutella and hazelnut prod-ucts, and anything containing tree nuts.

Al Zahra College and the Soummaka family appreciate your assistance in making our College a nut free zone.

Thank you in advance for your complete support.

ASTRO AHMAD’S AMAZING FACTSOn the 13th of June 2012 NASA launched a black hole hunter into space. This new telescope, called Nustar, will be used to find and study one of the most amazing and mysterious objects in space. BLACK HOLES!

Black holes are fascinating objects because they have such powerful gravity that they pull in everything in their path. Not even light can escape from them, that is why they are invisible. So if they are invisible, then how do we know they exist???

We know they exist because when a black hole pulls in matter [solids, liquids and gases], radiation is released and this helps astronomers find the black hole using special x-ray telescopes.

Have you ever wondered what would happen to you if you ever fell into a black hole? Not that it

could ever happen, but let’s imagine you fell in feet first. The gravitational pull on your feet would be stronger than that on your head, because of the small distance between them, causing your body to be stretched out like a piece of bubble gum. This process is called “spaghettification” or the noodle effect. In other words, you'd be turned into spaghetti.

So how is a black hole formed? One way a black hole is formed is when a large star, about ten times the size of our sun, grows old and dies. When the core of such a star runs out of fuel to burn, it will explode into something called a supernova. The left over material from the explosion collapses into itself and becomes a black hole. This type of black hole is called a Stella-mass black hole.

Scientists also believe there is a black hole in the center of most galaxies, including the Milky Way- our galaxy, not the chocolate! This black hole is called Sagittarius A and it's a super massive black hole that

has a mass equal to about 4 million suns [mass is the amount of matter or “stuff” in an object].

Can Earth be gobbled up by Sagittarius A?

Never fear, the super massive black hole in the centre of our galaxy is too far from our solar system so it can't pull us in. Also, our sun is not big enough to turn into a black hole when it dies, therefore, our Earth is safe from black holes. However, asteroids on the other hand, well, that's a different story!

Until next time, this is Astro Ahmad taking you to infinity and beyond....

ICAS TESTSWelcome back, this is my sec-

ond extract (piece of informa-tion) for Al News! Today I will be discussing the ICAS tests.

Al Zahra students across Years 3,4,5,6 and secondary have

already participated in the first four exams which were computing studies, science, writing and spelling and are awaiting the upcoming English

and Maths tests.

I will now give you a brief re-port on what the ICAS test is. ICAS stands for International Competitions and Assessments

for Schools. These tests occur annually for primary and secondary schools. They consist of computer skills, English, maths, science,

spelling and writing.

Every year, over one million students participate in these tests and they are from over 6,300 schools in Australia.

Other countries where the test is sat include New Zealand, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa and the USA.

The ICAS tests give you a great

indication as to how you rank across internationally. I believe it is based more on general ability than actual preparation. This is my second year

participating in these tests and I can tell you they’re challenging. The hardest thing is the wait for the results, as Dr Darvall doesn’t let us know until the

end of the year Annual Presentation which I think is pretty unfair, but in saying that, it’s worth the wait.

Best of luck to all our students

at Al Zahra, and let’s hope we can achieve our best results.

The Polluted Ocean I am going to write about

polluted oceans.

The most polluted ocean in the

world is the Indian Ocean. The Indian Ocean has been polluted for the past 28 years. The Indian Ocean is very dirty and all of the rubbish is causing the

animals to die.

Who are causing these problems?

These people are ones who don’t care about the environment. They don’t want us to have a clean Earth and they are being very selfish.

They are called ocean polluters.

There are many ways to help our ocean but the most obvious one is not to throw you rubbish

on the ground.

THE FIFA WORLD CUP 2014The FIFA World Cup 2014 will start on Thursday, 12 June, and ends Sunday, 13 July, in Brazil.

The 2014 FIFA World Cup will be the 20th FIFA World Cup. This will be the second time Brazil has hosted the competition, the first being the 1950 FIFA World Cup.

Brazil will become the fifth country to have hosted the FIFA World Cup twice, after Mexico, Italy, France and Germany. It will be the first World Cup to be held in South America since the 1978 FIFA World Cup in Argentina. This will be the first time two consecutive World Cups are staged outside Europe and the first time two consecutive World Cups are staged in the Southern Hemisphere (the 2010 FIFA World Cup was held in South Africa).

The 2014 FIFA World Cup will feature 32 teams. Australia qualified to play in the FIFA World Cup in 2006 and 2010 but was unable to win.

The Australian team, the Soc-ceroos, has a new German coach Holger Osieck, who has helped produce impressive results in the 2011 AFC Asian Cup. Tim Cahill remains the team’s undoubted star and talisman with a stunning goal ratio from midfield and equally remarkable heading ability despite his modest stature. Long-serving skipper and

central defender Lucas Neill remains the bedrock of the team.

We wish them good luck and hope that they will bring the cup home.

Exceptional

Behaviour Awards

From ancient times, human beings have been living in a group and communicating with each other in different terms. Even in today’s modern world, we still maintain the same thing. In today’s world, good manners or good behaviour are very im-portant in most of our lives. I am going to discuss the exceptional behaviour award (EBA) program in our school playground.

Along with learning, good manners are very important. Our respected teachers teach us the proper behaviour we should model both in school and at home. For example, when teachers enter the classroom we exchange greetings, in the same

way when a relative or visitor comes to our home we should do the same thing.

While we are playing during the fruit break and lunch our teachers monitor our behaviour with our friends. Teachers look for the following: friendly play; kind communication and gestures; polite students; respectful students; caring students; and helpful students.

If teachers observe students modelling the above behaviours, they are awarded an EBA (Exceptional behaviour award). At the end of the school term, the awards are tallied up in each class and the class with the most EBA’s wins the prestigious award of the most exceptionally behaved class in the playground.

In Term 1, Year 4 won the award and now in Term 2, Year 1 are favourites to win the award as they have an amazing tally of 115 so far. Well done to both classes.

It is really important to maintain behaviour, not only in the playground but also every stage in our life. In that way we can be successful in our life.

The International Baccalaureate

The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young peo-ple who will help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understand-ing and respect.

To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programs of international education and rigorous assessment.

IB programs encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right

The most significant and distinctive feature of the IB Primary Years Program is the six transdisciplinary themes.

PYP Authorization

On December 22nd 2011, AZC was officially authorized as an IB world school for the Primary Years Programme. IB authorization means that AZC has fulfilled the requirements for program implementation including curriculum and policy development. The requirements for authorization are the same in each IB region with the process designed to ensure that schools are well prepared to implement the programme successfully.

AZC is a Candidate MYP School and an Inter-ested Diploma Programme School. By 31 March 2012, AZC will submit an application for an authorisation visit in Semester 1 2013. If successful, AZC will then offer the Diploma Programme as the AZC school exit credential from 2014 with our first Y12 graduates in 2015.

AZC is proud to be an IB World School.
