Hannah is TOPS!By Jordan Lee (35/10)Tay Shi En Hannah (25/09) is the colleges Top Science and Top Chinese Student with 7Distinctions with H2 subjects in Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and Economics. She was anALPHA Student.

Q: How did you feel before you got your results?A: I had wanted to only be in the hall when the result slips are given out in classes. I was atthe foyer when my name was called out as Top Student which made me rush into the hall to be

congratulated by Ms Leong. I am still in shock actually!

Q: Did you study hard or do you think you are naturally smart?A: Im more of a study-hard person and I think its about constant revision. Talent can also benurtured by studying hard.

Q: What would you advise your juniors?A: To always do constant revision and always see your teachers for consultation.

Play Hard, Study Smart!By Ayesha Solehan (36/10)When asked how Top Malay Student Muhammad Hazim bin Rosli (06/09) balanced hisstudies and his role as the Vice-Captain of AJs Soccer team, he attributed his achievements(7 Distinctions) to proper time management. The ALPHA Student advises his juniors thatproper time management is essential in doing well, and it is more important to study smart, than just studying hard. Hazim cited the Reading Room and the Library as among the bestplaces to study in school. He found studying outside counter-productive. He also diligentlywrote his own notes as his form of revision. When approached, Hazim was at a loss forwords as he did not expect to get a distinction for his General Paper, though he did hope fordistinctions in his other subjects. He also said that liking his subjects was another essentialfactor in doing well, as he did very much enjoy Mathematics and Chemistry. With his perfectrank points, he has been offered a scholarship to study Chemical Engineering at the NationalUniversity of Singapore (NUS) but he hopes to study that subject at the Imperial College ofLondon instead. Hazim aspires to be a pilot with Singapore Airlines in the future. He wishesto thank all his subject and CCA teachers for being there to support him whenever he needed

them. We wish Hazim all the best for his future!

Nobody Said It Was EasyBy Teo Chin Siang (36/10)Har Amreet Kaur d/o Ramesh(21/09) emerged as the Top Indian student (local) of AJC inthe A Level Examinations with 6 Distinctions. The journey to her glory today hasnt beena smooth one. Amreet revealed that it was strenuous for her to ask for consultations withteachers given her soft-spoken and passive character. Like most of us, she had faced setbacksin her grades. Instead of throwing herself into despair, she had turned these setbacks into aforce of motivation to strive for better grades. It took Amreet a lot of effort and she oftenstudied at her favourite mugging spot at Woodlands National Library to ensure consistency.

Her advice for us juniors? Dont lose hope, continue to strive. Always ask questions whenin doubt

Sit Tight in the RaceAgainst Time

Tan Ho Yee(32/09) was genuinely surprised when Ms Leong announced her name as theTop Arts Student. She never expected that she would score this well in the examinations.Diligence is the key to Ho Yees success. She encourages her juniors to constantly be

motivated because the race against time will get extremely difficult, especially towardsthe end of the year. She recommends the airport as being conducive for studying because itis a quiet place where peer-revision could be done. Interestingly, she believes in luck too,as she feels that we could all use a pinch of good luck to boost our confidence during theexams. Ho Yee plans to further her studies at the National University of Singapore (NUS).She plans to get into Law School or the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. We wish Ho Yeeall the best in her future endeavours!

Managing Studies is a Conscious Action

Diane Seto (31/09) obtained 6 Distinctions. She was a member of Project Eureka and was also anALPHA Student.

Q: How did you manage your studies before the A Level?

A: For me, managing my studies had to be a conscious action. I had to put much effort and timeinto planning out my study schedule a few months before the A Level. I remember I took one

whole Saturday just making these plans! They were very detailed - I believe I had planned outspecic topics and chapters to cover every week, and the specic number of hours I would spendon them. I also drew a timeline to get a big picture of the entire study process and the time framebetween major tests/exams. Making these plans made me more at ease because I knew I had tojuggle many responsibilities - CCA, assignments and the like.

Q: Where was your favourite mugging spot?A: Id have to say the AJ Library attic - Id choose a table to the far end of the room next to the glass windows. The library isclean and the air-conditioning makes it really conducive for studying. And its quiet!

Q: Do you have any tips for your juniors?

A: I think the key to doing well is not about mugging 24/7, but studying smart. Pay attention during lectures, take down notes, and ask questions during tutorials. Clarify all your doubts as early as you can. Never leave them to a week or two before the

exams. Every day when you return home from school, try to review what you learnt during the day. It doesnt take long, maybeabout half an hour per subject, if you put your mind to it. It might also be a good idea to see your tutorials as extra practiceinstead of a chore. Make a habit of reviewing your work before doing your tutorials to get the most out of them.

    By Lim Seow Hwee (36/10)

Super BoyBy Lim Seow Hwee (36/10)Edwin Ang Ching Jitt (06/09) scored 7As. He was a class leader and an ODAC Quartermaster with152 hours of Community Involvement Programme (CIP) Hours under his belt. He received a CCAMerit Award & the Social Service Platinum Award 2010. He was also an ALPHA Student and was partof the Ang Mo Kio Trail Core Organising Committee.

Q: Did you study hard or do you think you are naturally smart?

A: I believe that nobody is born with the knowledge of calculus; all of us have to go through a processof learning and we should work hard towards that knowledge and the skill that we desire, though Ido acknowledge that the circumstance and the speed at which we learn may differ. Nonetheless, Ibelieve just by working hard would not likely bring us far in life, we need to also work smart, workwith our peers, and most importantly, work with our mentors and our beloved teachers to achieve our dream.

Q: What were your motivations while studying for the A Level?A: My most signicant motivation was to win a scholarship for my tertiary education to reduce my dads nancial burden. ThoughI was offered the ASEAN Scholarship Merit Award to pursue my studies in Singapore for the past 4 years, it was still nanciallychallenging, especially when my brothers were also concurrently pursuing their Pre-university and University education. Withthe scholarship ending upon my graduation from AJC, scholarship would be vital for me to continue pursuing university courseshere in Singapore. Besides, I have made many friends and buddies in AJC, be it in class or CCA, who supported me in studiesand various projects without which my success would not have been possible. In addition, I was also very motivated by thepatient and enthusiastic teachers who taught me in various aspects of studies and project management as well as never failingto answer some weird questions that I occasionally posed. Thank you, everyone!

Reginald Ng (06/09) scored 6As. He was the Vice-President of Visual Arts Club. He was also theoverall champion of AJ Idol in 2010.

Q: How did you manage your studies before the GCE A Level?A: I participated in AJ Idol last year so I had to practice my piano to prepare for the performance.Playing the piano was a chance for me to relax. I also went to church weekly and had prayertime, which were also forms of relaxation for me.Q: What was the toughest challenge you faced while studying?A: A lack of sleep! I only had 3 hours of sleep before my literature paper!

Q: Do you have any tips for your juniors?A: Do your best and you wont have any regrets!

Q: Is there anybody you would like to thank?A: God, my family and my teachers.

The annual post-Promo Character Development Programme happened on the 18th and the 19th ofNovember 2010. The meeting point was at Castle Beach at East Coast Park.

The JC1s built sandcastles based on their class vision and goals. The students learnt the importance ofteamwork, cohesion, unity and perseverance as they built sandcastles under the hot afternoon sun.

It might seem enjoyable but the activity was actually arduous as meticulous planning was needed to

ensure that the task objective of building sandcastles as a class was met. Apart from the scorchingtemperature, students had fun overall, bonding with their classmates.

UnforgettableBy Ong Xin Yang (24/10) & Ching Kwun Hin (35/10)

The annual NYAA-ODAC Camp was held on the 26th 28th ofNovember last year.

Participants had to push themselves to the limit and showcasetheir resilience throughout the 3 days. They went all out oftheir comfort zone as they roughed it out sleeping in tents, not being able to bath properly and enduring a 20km nightexpedition to catch a glimpse of the sunrise at the SingaporeFlyer. The campers enjoyed other activities too, such as theBarbeque and the Amazing Race.

But the camp was not just about going through hardshiptogether; it also offered the participants many new experiencesand broaden their knowledge on various places in Singapore;for instance, trekking along the Southern Ridge at night andexperiencing Singapores vibrant city nightlife.

The camp was never about the end result, but rather theprocess. It was a learning journey. An eagle never learns toy without rst taking the leap of faith to jump from its nest.In the same way, we learnt that we must test and challengeourselves in order to discover what we are truly capable of.

    Opportunities and Partnership 9

Mr Robert Kee, newly appointed Vice-Principal to AJC, is often seen with a genial smile that has putmany students at ease in his presence.

Mr Kee was working in the private sector before becoming a civil servant. It is admirable that Mr Keegave up a high-paying job in order to work with us, young ones, as he fervently believes that the

students today are the leaders tomorrow. He hopes that by investing his time with us, we will becomebetter leaders for Singapore.

His passion for education is evident in many aspects. For one, he is not bothered by the fact that theworking hours are long (7am to 6-7pm daily) as he believes that his investment in us will be worthwhile. He wants the right values to be inculcated in the students which he believes will be made easier becausewe have a cozy and friendly environment that promotes leadership qualities with supportive teachers. He hopes we will invest our time and energy wisely and never falter when we meet obstacles.

More interesting facts on Mr Kee:

    1. He has worked in the computer, medical and scientic industries.2. He came from Waters Asia-Pacic, a market leader in Analytical Instruments and before

that, he was in the medical instruments industry for 15 years working for Philips, Agilent and

Hewlett-Packard.3. In Waters Asia-Pacic where he spent 5 years before joining AJC, he was the Director of theService Organization where his main responsibility was to ensure that customers are satised withthe services and support provided by the company.

On 25th March 2011, parents of JC1 students were invited for theannual Parents-Principal Meeting at the AJ Auditorium. Our principal,

Ms Susan Leong, gave valuable information about the JC1 curriculum, our schools vision, mission, values and opportunities offered to ourstudents. The admission criteria for universities in Singapore were alsoshared, as well as the requisite grades to pass each subject. Key eventsduring the school year such as the common tests, promotional examsand Science Practical Assessments were highlighted as well.

From the 23rd - 27th November 2010, 14 AJCians represented thecollege in The Hague International Model United Nations (THIMUN)Conference, where they were offered the delegation of Germanyand Cote dIvoire. Undeniably, it was one of those rare opportunitieswhere students from all over the world gathered to discuss globalissues. Armed with the relevant research they did over the course ofone month, participants in the THIMUN Conference tried their handsat drafting their own UN resolutions and honing their respectivedebating and public speaking skills during resolution debates. It wasindeed an enriching and unforgettable experience for all studentswho took part as it provided them with a sneak peek into the runningand organization of the UN. Indeed, the THIMUN Conference was aneye-opener for these lucky AJCians as they managed to developskills, forge new friendships and glean invaluable lessons that theycan never learn in the connes of a classroom.

10 Social Conscience - Family Day

On the 2nd of April, students and teachers alike waited tocatch a glimpse of our guest of honour,MP Seng Han Thong,

as he arrived on the stage of the AJ Square at 9am. We wereexcited, waiting in anticipation of this festival of fun, goodiesand colours. AJCians displayed their entrepreneurial spiritwith a variety of stalls ranging from pasta and donuts tohaunted houses, with proceeds from the sales going toAsianWomens Welfare Association (AWWA).

On this memorable occasion, the buzz around the stalls was,for the day, the hub of entertainment for visitors and studentsalike. The Multi-Purpose Hall turned into a gladiator ringas students crowded around and on the balcony above, towatch the epic battle between our Principal,Ms Susan Leongand physics teacher, Mr Chan Chee Ming in giant plasticbubbles. Over at the dunking machine, crowds gathered asthey witness their favourite teachers and CCA leaders fallinginto the water. At one of the haunted houses, a little boytugged at a zombies detached hand, which was supposed toscare. It was all in all a beautiful mess, when the unexpectedbrought joy and reward to the effort we had put in togetheras a college.

As the stalls sold out and the event drew to a close, a giantbanner bearing the AWWA logo made up of a record number ofpaper hearts was unveiled. A national record was set in stoneright in the AJ campus, a testament to what we as a collegecan achieve by working together. 3431 paper hearts were sold(which means $3431 was raised!) and that is an achievement

in itself as it exceeded their initial target of 2800 hearts.

That said, its hard not to give ourselves a pat on the back asthe whole event saw us coming up with the total of more than$40,000 which will be donated to our beneciary!

The banner is on display at the AJ Library.

To fullyappreciate the technologyof this laboratory, onewould have to know that something one nanometer longwould be 100,000 times thinner than the width of a strandof human hair!

OrcGanic GamingTournament2011On the 12th of March, two teams of ve students fromcXtreme took part in the rst Orcganic Gaming Tournament, jointly organised by SAJC andANGLER. OrcGanic is an organicchemistry game, where two opposing teams faced off againsteach other in a capture the ag and deathmatch game. Thecompetitors had to combine organic and inorganic reagents, state the correct conditions, temperature and reactionmechanism to create spells. These spells can then be used toght opponents or heal teammates. The tournament drew 31teams from over 15 tertiary institutions. Both teams from AJC

made it into the Round of 16 after facing off two teams fromRI. One team then went on to the nals, coming up againstincreasingly tougher opponents from River Valley High Schooland Dunman High School. The team met Millennia Institutein the nals and eventually emerged as Champions. The teamwon for themselves a Xbox 360 Kinect each. The team was alsoinvited to a gaming exhibition held on 19th of March at thepolytechnics.

On the 23rd of February, three teams of students from the robotics section of CXtreme took part in the rst annual NUS-IEEERobotics Challenge 2011. The competition was jointly organised by the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Instituteof Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a worldwide professional engineering and technology association. The event wasa line-tracking challenge, which required the team to build and program a robot to track a line across a course with multipledead ends to the nish. While the teams faced stiff competition from the other teams such as Rafes JC and NUS High, one teammanaged to enter the second round, in which the nalists were decided. Even though they did not make it into the nals, theteams picked up useful tips and knowledge from the competition experience and are now better equipped to train the next batchof robotics members to better prepare them for next years competition.

Its when youre safe at home that you wish you werehaving an adventure, and when youre having

an adventure you wish you were safe at home.

    - Thornton Wilder

A group of privileged students-drawn by the promise ofadventure and the secret desire for an escape from themundane cycle of everyday life signed on when OutwardBound Taiwan (OBT) came knocking.

It was winter when we arrived in December 2010. Rivertracing in icy-cold waters was our rst activity followed bya demanding six-day mountain expedition on Nan Hu Shan(with an altitude of 3,742 km above sea level), which was thehighlight of the trip. As a group, we hiked many kilometresevery day on unfamiliar rocky terrain with heavy load and theresponsibility of orchestrating the journey in our own hands.

Against intuition, a precarious cliff and steep downward-slope segment, not the summit climb, proved to be the mosttreacherous part of our expedition. It had unpredicted windsthat concurrently threw the biggest of us around and sappedour body heat, with half of members attempting that afterdarkness fell!

Sounds torturous and crazy? Yup, we probably thought so theretoo. Steamy Singapore had never seemed so appealing. Yet,true to the quote above, it is in the safety of home that weyearn with unbelievable fondness for the Taiwan experienceagain. Opportunities present themself for us to embrace, to

test how far we can truly go. After all, theres more to lifethan just to live.
