[1]. XIII SIMPOSIO INTERCRISTIANO "LA VITA DEI CRISTIANI E IL POTERE CIVILE:

QUESTIONI STORICHE E PROSPETTIVE ATTUALI IN ORIENTE E OCCIDENTE"(MILANO, 28-30.08.2013)

Questioni storiche e prospettive attuali

    in Oriente e Occidente.

Projektes Damned in Hell in the Frescoes of Venetian-Dominated Crete (13th- 17th centuries), das

von Dr. Angeliki Lymberopoulou (The Open University, Milton Keynes) und Prof. Dr. Vasiliki

[9]. OTHELLO'S ISLAND: SECOND ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF MEDITERRANEAN AND

LEVANTINE CULTURAL HISTORY IN THE BYZANTINE, MEDIEVAL AND

RENASSAINCE PERIODS AND THEIR LEGACIES IN ART, CULTURE, HISTORY,

    LITERATURE AND MORE (CYPRUS, 9-12.04.2014)

    Da: Alessandra Bucossi ([email protected])

On behalf of the Academic Board of the 2014 Mediaeval and Renaissance Conference "Othello's

Island" I would like to inform you of our second annual conference taking place in Cyprus in 2014.

The conference is organised by academics from the Cornaro Institute, University of Sheffield

School of English and the University of Leeds School of Fine Art. It will be an opportunity to

discuss diverse aspects of this fascinating period in Mediterranean and Levantine history with

colleagues and reserach students from around the world. As a multi-disciplinary conference, art,

literature and other culture are all welcome topics, as are historical studies, archaeology, cultural

and material history, social history and other topics. However this list should not be seen as

exhaustive, so please do consider submitting a proposal even if your subject area is not listed.

Similarly, although based in Cyprus the aim of the second conference is to expand our

investigations into the wider Mediterranean and Levantine region, and to also encompass aspects of

Byzantine, Crusader State and Muslim cultural and social histories, during the Middle Ages and

    Renaissance.

A major strand is Cyprus and/or the Mediterranean in art, literature and other culture in the period,

including their presence in the work of Shakespeare and other writers. Cyprus is, after all, the island

of Othello (in a manner of speaking).

We hope you will have an interest in attending this event yourself, but also please do circulate this

information to your colleagues and students, whether undergraduate, postgraduate or at research

    level.

The Members of the Academic Board for Othello's Island Conference 2014 are:

Professor James Fitzmaurice, University of Sheffield

Professor Rico Frances, American University of Beirut

Dr Michalis Olympios, University of Cyprus

Dr Michael Paraskos, Cornaro Institute, Cyprus

Benedict Read, FSA, University of Leeds

Dr Rita Severis, Costas and Rita Severis Foundation Museum, Cyprus

[10]. 9TH INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS ON MEDIEVAL STUDIES (8-11.05.2014): CALL

FOR PAPERS FOR A PANEL DISCUSSIONE: MOVING IMAGE AS A MEANS OFDOCUMENTING AND PROMOTING BYZANTINE AND MEDIEVAL CULTURE

    (DEADLINE: 15.09.2013)

    Da: Claudia Sojer ([email protected])

Call for Papers for a Panel Discussion:

Moving Image as a Means of Documenting and Promoting Byzantine and Medieval Culture

    Deadline: September 15, 2013

This panel aims to engage in a discussion about the use of moving images in fieldwork projects and

how the medium was used to document and promote Byzantine and Medieval art. By conducting a

comparison between the moving image collection held by the Image Collections and Fieldwork

Archives (ICFA) of Dumbarton Oaks and other similar holdings in other institutions, we aim to

explore their similarities and differences; understand the motivations of using this medium; and

illustrate the cinematic style employed in these film collections.

As a case study, this panel discussion aims to introduce ICFA's leading protagonist Thomas

Whittemore and the unique collection of moving images by the Byzantine Institute, a non-profit

organization established in 1930 by Whittemore to document their fieldwork activities, including

restoration and conservation. To understand the Institute's mission, we need to examine the stylistic

differences between its first film documentation of the Red Sea Monasteries in Egypt, filmed in

black-and-white, and the two most important monuments of Byzantine culture, Hagia Sophia and

Kariye Camii in Istanbul, Turkey. The former illustrates a traditional style of film documentation

for archaeological excavations with an anthropological interest, while the latter, filmed in color as

early as 1936 to 1948, displays a more formal and intimate approach towards the monuments. They

were instrumental for the promotion of the Institute's goal to capture the quality and splendor of

Byzantine mosaics and also illustrate the early techniques of restoration and conservation, leaving

an indispensable document of the methods employed.

Our questions for this panel discussion include: What were the initial motivations to use movingimages in the documentation of fieldwork activities? Was it solely a financial matter or can moving

images of fieldwork projects transmit a different message than still photography? Are the decisions

In comparison with the wave of research dedicated to the aesthetics of the Latin Middle Ages,

Byzantine aesthetics must be considered a relatively new and still largely unexplored subject. The

contributions assembled in the present volume document the growing research interest in this fieldand present a wide variety of issues and methodologies that will be of interest to students and

scholars of the philosophy, art, and literature of Late Antiquity and the Byzantine period.

The present volume assembles the papers presented at the round table "Aesthetics and Theurgy in

Byzantium" at the 22nd Congress of Byzantine Studies, which took place in Sofia, Bulgaria, in

    August 2011.

The general scope of the present volume is to present a variety of approaches and topics within the

growing field of research on Byzantine aesthetics. Theurgy in Neoplatonic and Christian contexts is

represented by the contributions of W.-M. Stock and L. Bergemann; theories of beauty are at the

centre of interest of the papers by S. Mariev and M. Marchetto.

    A. Pizzone approaches Byzantine aesthetics by looking for aesthetic experience in the literary texts,

while the remaining contributions explore issues related to the iconoclast controversy: An important

moment in the development of Byzantine philosophy on the eve of iconoclasm is the primary

interest of A. del Campo Echevarria, who looks at the question of universals in John of Damaskos.

The relationship between image and text in Byzantine illustrated manuscripts occupies the attention

of B. Crostini. D. Afinogenov explores from a philological perspective the fate of important

iconophile terminology in Old Bulgarian, while L. Lukhovitskij reconstructs from historical and

philological perspectives the historical memory of the iconoclast controversy during the Late

    Byzantine Period.

    [8]. DUMBARTON OAKS MANUSCRIPTS-ON-MICROFILM DATABASE

Da: Vera von Falkenhausen ([email protected])

Dumbarton Oaks Research Library holds almost 2000 microfilm rolls that are reproductions of

medieval and early modern manuscripts, the originals of which are held in institutions around the

world. In 2011, the Library began a project that included the creation of a database representing the

Library's microfilm holdings. Thanks to the combined efforts of Library and Publications staff, a

version of that database, with records for 1252 microfilm and 1221 manuscripts, is now available on

    the D.O. website: http://www.doaks.org/library-archives/library/mmdb
