‘KMB’ brand Diver’s helmets and masks, now

marketed under ‘DSI’ (Diving System International),

are creations of accomplished Commercial Diver turned

designer Bill Morgan. Since incorporation of his

company ‘Kirby Morgan Corporation’ in 1960’s, he has

designed many versions of ‘KMB’ brand helmets and

masks, including the KMB 17, KMB 18 and KMB 27.

These being some of the most successful and widely

used in the diving industry world wide.

These Helmets and Masks are designed to be used with

an umbilical made up of air/gas supply hoses,

communications cable, pneumo-fathometer and safety

line, taped together to make one unit. The umbilical is

the Diver’s lifeline to the Diving Control Station (DCS),

which can be either on the surface, in a diving bell or in

a submerged habitat. The DCS is the control centre for

the Air/Gas supply, communications with the diver and

diving/work procedures.

KMB 18

The diver usually wears a tank of compressed air or gas

fitted with a suitable pressure regulator to reduce

theEpressure to about 125PSI for emergency use.

The main frame of the mask is fabricated of non-

corrosive rigid ABS plastic that will not carry an electric

charge. The pipe-work is fabricated from high quality

stainless steel, chromed brass and polished brass. The

masks and helmets are regularly inspected and parts

replaced where necessary to ensure safety.

The communications system has been redesigned to

improve the clarity irrespective of depth. The system

consists of two earphones situated in hood pockets at

either ear and the microphone is in the oral nasal at the

front of the mask.

KMB 17

The main gas/air supply from the umbilical enters the

system at the adapter and flows through the automatic

one way valve to the interior of the side block assembly.

The demand regulator provides ‘Demand’ breathing

system, which is adjustable for gas supplies from 80PSI

to about 180PSI over ambient diver pressure.

‘HELLE’ DIVER PHONES

GAS RADIO AIR RADIO

A completely self-contained unit that provides two-wire communication between the operator and one or two divers.

The Model 3220 provides unusually good sound quality, even in a helium atmosphere, because of a broader

frequency response of 300Hz to 12kHz, which is greater than the 300Hz 3kHz typically used in voice communicationsystems.

For easy hook-up, the two wires from each of the divers speakers/microphones are connected to binding posts on the

front panel. The speakers function as speakers and microphones for both divers’ and surface units. When two divers

are connected in this manner, a three-way conversation is possible; the operator can talk to each diver individually orboth simultaneously. The divers can also talk to each other directly.

A Press-to-talk switch, a diver speaker selector and two cross-talk switches enable the surface operator to control allmodes of operation. Separate volume controls adjust the output of both the surface unit’s and divers’

speaker/microphones, providing the divers with more or less volume as conditions demand. A full six watts audioallows easy listening even at noisy work sites.

An important safety feature is the input and output transformers that electrically isolate the divers’ cables from powerleads. Internal shielding suppresses interference from ignition systems, radio transmission and generating equipment.

A record jack on the front panel enables the tender to record both sides of all conversations.

An optional feature is the Remote Jack, which will allow the tender to remotely operate the Press-to-talk switch up to250 feet away from the unit.
