EDUCATION WEEK
AIM HIGH @ HEPSDear Parents
Welcome back! As is standard at HEPS it’s great to witness our students return happy and energized to
commence the new term. I hope everyone was able to enjoy the holidays with family and friends and
take advantage of the gorgeous weather. Thank you to everyone who used our school grounds during the
holidays and did so in a fit and proper manner so we were able to resume school with all facilities intact.
Term Two promises to be an exciting term with many experiences and opportunities already planned as is
evident by the Term Two Calendar, attached to this newsletter. You will notice in particular NAPLAN
times for our students in grades three and five, Education Week, ANZAC day ceremonies, interschool
sports and various class excursions. You may wish to place this calendar in an obvious place and add
new activities and dates as they arise.
FOOD TECHONOGY AND SCIENCE FACILITY
You may have had the opportunity to walk down the corridor and
sneaked a peak into the new complex……….it looks great! I know
staff and numerous students have expressed sheer excitement about the
ability to use the kitchen as early as
Monday 22nd
April if all is approved this
week. Shelving and furniture for the library
(Resource Centre) should arrive on Monday
29th
so this facility will also look fresh,
inspirational and conducive to learning. Once it is officially opened and in
use, come in and check it out! I’m sure you’ll be impressed.
SCHOOL COUNCIL 2013
On Monday 25th
March, we held our AGM where we acknowledged a busy and successful 2012. You
should find the President and Principal’s Report on the school website. We thanked Mr David Glagovs
for being a contributing member of our school council over the last two years and Mr Greg Perry who
served on the council for four years, two of them as Council President. We welcomed our new school
council members for 2013, Michael Beer and the return of Andrew Martin, Ian MacLeod, Wayne Smith,
Chris Finighan and Lesley Wallace; the council co-opted Nicky Marran for the 2013 term.
Office Bearers are as follows:
President: Mark Granland
Vice President: Wayne Smith
Secretary: Cameron Agars
Treasurer: Annette Taylor
PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION
The Parents’ Association held their AGM on 21st March. Cathy Davidson read out her President’s report
which I have attached to the School Website. On behalf of the school community I wish to thank Cathy
for her contribution to the Parents’ Association whilst also balancing a challenging work commitment.
After the AGM the 2013 Parents’ Association was formed; office bearers are:
President: Kellie Liddell
Vice President: Kellie Moran
Secretary: Leanne Wolfe
Treasurer: Shereen Hook
Congratulations to these ladies; I know that the committee would love you to come and join the PA
meetings and contribute to the wonderful activities that they plan and organize to enhance a sense of
community and fundraise to support learning programs and resources.
Thank you to our Parents’ Association for the fabulous Easter Raffle which concluded last term; as usual
it was sensational…..especially that I won an Easter package.
ANZAC DAY
Our students represented our school at two ANZAC ceremonies this week:
The Junior School Council and our School Captains attended a ceremony at
Ringwood Lake on Wednesday 17th
April; they were welcomed by our Prime
Minister, Julia Gillard, which was quite a surprise and topic of excitement and
conversation to all of them. The students were commended on their reverence and
good manners by Miss Cody and Miss Lord, our JSC coordinators.
The School Captains, House/Vice House Captains and Social Service monitors attended a ceremony at
the Shrine on Thursday 18th
April. Again these students were exemplary, our school captains laid a
wreath on behalf of our students, and Maisie and Abby presented a wreath create by Mrs Dowzer, another
beauty! Our Premier, Denis Napthine attended the ceremony and took the time to shake many of the
students’ hands. The service was moving and our students appreciative of the experience.
HIGH PERFORMER
Congratulations to Daniel Boss in grade 6 for acquiring a scholarship to attend Tintern Grammar; this was
a result of his academic prowess! Well done!
ACTIVE AFTER SCHOOL COMMUNITIES
Again this term we are able to provide our students the
opportunity to engage in physical activities after school, thanks to
Mr Deith:
Multi-skills will be provided for grades 1 and 2 students on Tuesdays 3.45pm
Karate will be provided to our grades 3 – 6 on Mondays, both activities commencing the week of 29th
April.
NAPLAN
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN)
Our year 3 and 5 students will sit for Literacy and Numeracy tests on Tuesday 14th
May, Wednesday 15th
May and Thursday 16th
May. The results of the tests provide diagnostic information for parents and
teachers about a child’s performance in Language Conventions, Writing, Reading and Numeracy. This
information can be used to support teaching and learning programs and improve student achievement. Be
aware, though that this is only one test on one day in your child’s life and is certainly not the sole
indicator of your child’s success.
2013 ATTITUDES TO SCHOOL SURVEY
Students in grades 5/6 will have the opportunity to complete this survey over a two week period
commencing Monday 22nd
April; this should provide valuable feedback that enables us to better
understand how our students perceive HEPS as a place of learning.
WELCOME NEW STAFF
Welcome to Jacqui Greig who has commenced this term as an integration aide.
Also welcome to our School Nurse, Michelle Brown who will commence her role with us
on Monday 22nd
April. I am confident these ladies will complement the outstanding team
at HEPS. Michelle is a highly experienced nurse who has worked in
various hospitals and institutions; she comes highly acclaimed and we
look forward to her fulfilling this new and important role at HEPS.
OPPORTUNITIES TO BENEFIT OUR SCHOOL
As you would be aware the Woolworths Earn and Learn Points program has returned; if you happen to
shop at Woolworths please collect your points from the
checkout operator and place them on an Earn and Learn Points
Sheet. Once completed, place the sheet in the collection box near
the office.
Remember if you purchase from the Heathmont Bakers’ Delight, please quote our loyalty number, 2013,
as we will receive a percentage depending on the amount of purchases made at this store. I stress that
where you shop is your choice however if you normally shop at these venues it would benefit the school
to participate in these reward schemes. Thank you.
Kind regards,
Kitty Allard.
Principal.

Hot Cross Bun Drive Money raised will go toward air conditioners for the

Peacemakers will be back out and about next week, helping our younger students in the playground, or in
their classroom when it is a wet day timetable. Thanks Peacemakers!
Year Six School Captains and House Captains Student Leadership
Project Early this year, our School Captains and House Captains attended the Maroondah East Student Leadership
Day and have begun working on their 2013 project. You might remember that last year’s Sixes began the
Little Talents at assembly and created the Friendship Seats. This year’s students have chosen two new areas
to develop at HEPS, those being ‘rubbish and recycling’ and ‘Bullying- No Way!’ They have already begun
discussing their ideas and planning activities for the school community, deciding on roles and responsibilities
and creating an action plan. You will be hearing lots more from them this term, starting with our next
newsletter!
Term 2, our values focus is responsibility. Responsibility can be a tricky thing to understand. Have you ever had someone
say to you, “You need to be more responsible!”? Look inside the word
responsibility and you will find a clue to the meaning of the word. That clue is a
related word, response. Responsibility is about our response. It is about our
ability to respond positively and with care. It is about using the power of our
actions and our words, to complete our work and duties to the best of our ability. Next newsletter, I would
like to include your tips on how to show responsibility.
Please write your tips below and hand them into your teacher or to the office, so I can put them in the next
newsletter. Your ideas about responsibility will help other people know how to show that they are also
responsible.
How do you show responsibility at home, at school, at your club…?

FACILITIES AND GROUNDS… Our facilities and grounds team needs your help! Please check out the call for new members in this
newsletter. We meet once a month, and plan maintenance and improvements to our school. If you are
interested either give me a call at the office, or come to our first meeting of the new school council year,
on Monday 29th
at 6.30pm. We’ll be meeting in the new kitchen/science/technology facility, next to the
office.
FUNDRAISING….
SCRAP METAL FUNDRAISING DRIVE - Monday 27 May to Monday 3
June Pass the word around the neighbourhood! This term, we are having our first ever SCRAP METAL
FUNDRAISING DRIVE. We are looking forward to it being a great success…great for the environment
and great for HEPS. Eco Waste Recycling Centre and Super Safe Bin Hire will be delivering skips on a
regular basis during the week 27th
May to 3rd
June, so that our local community can deposit any scrap
metal.
The facilities team plan to also have a trailer crew who will come and pick up scrap metal from homes.
Let’s all get on board and see how much we can recycle and also how much money we can raise from this
opportunity to ‘clean up’ the neighbourhood!
In a couple of weeks we will have brochures ready to distribute around the neighbourhood, so if you
would like to lend a hand to spread the word, please call the office and ask to speak to Chris Finighan.
PLAYGROUND WISHES Last term the children made ‘playground wishes’ that you will see all around
the school. The children talked about how they would like to be treated and
how they also wanted other people to be treated. Here are some of their
thoughts and feelings…..
I will treat everyone kindly and fairly. Be kind! When I get stressed, I will ask someone for help- Ask someone for help and they will help you! Be caring I wish that everyone was letting everyone in-Include others…friends or not! Have fun I will encourage others to think positive things about themselves- I am awesome! I would like to always get along and let’s forgive each other. I will be nice to everyone ! Take care all and have fun, Mrs Fin
Facilities and Grounds Committee Inviting new members to join our committee for 2013!
We are looking for new members who would like to contribute to the care and upkeep of our
wonderful school, and would like to invite interested parents to join our friendly and
enthusiastic facilities and grounds team.
In the past, some of our achievements include erection of additional play equipment, improvement of
oval and drainage, better emergency vehicle access to the school, annual maintenance and major works
planning, and of course the organisation of working bees.
Our first meeting will be here in our new kitchen/science facility at 6.30pm, on Monday 29 April, 2013.
(Next to the office in the main building.)
Please come on over and see our exciting new facility and meet the team, or give me a call on the number
below if you would like to discuss how you would like to be involved.
Hope to hear from you!

GAMES CLUBS!
We are planning to start two games clubs this term.

DONATIONS…
We are wondering if anyone in our school community has games at home
that are no longer in use that could be donated to the games clubs?
Please drop your games into the office and we promise they will be enjoyed by the HEPS children!
WOULD YOU LIKE TO DONATE YOUR TIME?
The games clubs will run between 1.40-2.30pm, during lunchtime. (Days yet to be decided)
A HEPS staff member will supervise the club, however, it is always great to have friendly, caring adults
to help the children learn new games and get along with each other.
If you are interested in coming along to assist children in games club, please contact me at the office.
Thanks!

from 1:40 - 2:05 pm and meet either myself or Mrs. Hassan at Sandland. This will continue until District Cross
Country the 28th May.
PAYMENTS

payments should be made via your child’s

sense of responsibility. Naturally if you
require EFT payments via a pin you are most
welcome to come to the office.
Ride2School Day We were proud to participate in National Ride2School day on Friday 22
nd, March along with
thousands of other schools around the country. On that day, more than half our staff, students
and families chose to leave the car at home and walk, cycle, scooter or skate to school.
As part of Ride2School Day we received prizes donated from Ramp It, Sonix Family
Entertainment and Maroondah City Council. All students who walked, cycled, scooted or
skated to school were eligible to go in the draw to win one of the 15 prizes.
The prizes were drawn by Michael Blowfield from Maroondah City Council at our Monday
morning assembly. Congratulations to all the winners and to all those who participated on the
day. We look forward to seeing more children walking and riding to school throughout the
year. This is such a great way to start the day and stay active and healthy.

ANZAC Day is a national day of remembrance in Australia and
New Zealand, originally commemorated by both countries on 25 April every year to honour the
members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) who fought at Gallipoli in
the Ottoman Empire during World War I. It now more broadly commemorates all those who
served and died in military operations for their countries ANZAC Day is also observed in the
Cook Islands, Niue, Pitcairn, and Tonga. It is no longer observed as a national holiday in Papua
New Guinea or Samoa.
Social service representatives will be coming around the school offering a range of ANZAC
commemorative items for your purchase. Prices range from $1.00 to $5.00.
If you are able to help with the washing of the sick bay linen
during the term, could you please leave your name and contact
number with the ladies at the office.
