Laura Graves (USA) and Verdades impressed the crowd and won the class with their debut performance of their freestyle planned for the 2018 FEI World Equestrian Games in Tryon. Graves and Verdades, her 17-year- old Dutch Warmblood gelding by Florett AS, topped the leader board for the second time in 2019 (after their Thursday FEI Grand Prix win) and earned a score of 83.220%. About Verdades, Graves said, “He let me know that he knows his job. He gives such a good feeling when he does go well that any little bump in my hand or my leg is shocking to me.” Commenting on her music for the freestyle, Graves said, “I wasn’t what sure which music I was going to do tonight. In the end, I’m very, very glad I chose to do my new music. I don’t know what else I would have been saving it for. I’m just glad that the timing worked out; I haven’t ridden to it yet. It’s supposed to be about the same as my last one, so I just crossed my fingers and hoped that it worked out and it did. I’m so lucky that Terri Gallo just takes whatever idea that I have.” Shelly Francis (USA) also had a strong performance in the freestyle and came in second with a score of 79.280%. Francis rode Danilo, a 15-year-old Hanoverian gelding by De Niro owned by Patricia Stempel. Commenting on her freestyle Francis said, “I made little changes in some of the music. Just little ones, but I left the choreography mostly the same. A couple of years past he would get nervous and kind of get a bit dumb. Now he just gets a little bit of extra energy into it and I need an extra half halt instead of going, ‘It’s okay.’ He is really maturing, but he took me awhile.” Tinne Vilhelmson Silfven (SWE) and Don Auriello, a 17-year-old Hanoverian gelding by Don Davidoff owned by Lövsta Stuteri, rounded out the top 3 with a score of 77.710%. “I really had a great feeling tonight. He just loves this atmosphere. He needs that. He’s used to competitions now and he really loves the atmosphere that comes in the evening with the music. So I had a great feeling. Yesterday I wanted too much so I asked too much and we had a lot of mistakes. So I’m so happy that I was back on track today and had this super feeling that it’s just fun to ride and just love to be that little child, that’s the feeling I had tonight,” said Silfven. Judge at C, Hans Christian Matthiesen, commented, “It’s wonderful to be back, and judge. An atmosphere like this, it’s really, really special. And then it’s just nice to be back and see some of these combinations that I’ve seen before, judged before, and then see them strive in this sometime difficult atmosphere when it gets so intense with all the spectators.” Jose Gomez, the President of the sponsor Wellington Agricultural Services, noted, “It’s a pleasure to be working with Adequan and the Global Dressage Festival. I’m very happy to be a part of the initiative to go green and help out the environment here. It’s what we stand for and we are very happy to be here and be a sponsor.” The second week of the AGDF featured the Para-Equestrian CPEDI 3*, presented by Mission Control, Adequan®, Nutrena, and Fair Sky Farm. In the final day of competition, riders performed their Freestyle tests for the judges. Kate Shoemaker (USA) and Solitaer 40 rode a beautiful test in the FEI Para Freestyle Grade IV - CPEDI 3* and earned a score of 75.458% to win the class. Grade IV is for riders who are impaired in one or two limbs or have some visual impairment. Shoemaker travels back and forth between her home in Phoenix, AZ, where she is an equine veterinarian, and Wellington to train. “He’s my heart horse, so just every day having the opportunity to ride him and to have that partnership is special. He’s a horse that when I got him I was told that I was never going to be able to ride him and that he would never be successful in Para,” said Shoemaker about Solitaer 40. “So to come this far with him - we’re now starting our fifth season together - I feel like it’s all about the partnership. He gives me so much that it’s just unbelievable.” “His elasticity is definitely his strength, and it was something that the judges noted this weekend that they really appreciated in him. Now we’re really starting to bring together a little bit more power and more balance in the arena, which is what’s been the big change,” added Shoemaker about her 12-year-old Hanoverian gelding by Sandro Hit. “As much improvement as he’s had, he still gives me those moments where there’s the next step up that we’re working on. It’s really an exciting journey that we are on right now.” Shoemaker said of her choreography, “Last summer I got together with Tom Hunt, and asked him if he would be willing to do a freestyle for me. I was ecstatic when he said yes. He actually custom composed the music to fit to ‘Solly’ and the choreography that we put together.” Rebecca Hart and El Corona Texel had a strong performance in the FEI Para Freestyle Grade III - CPEDI 3*, and won the class with a score of 75.278%. El Corona Texel is a 10-year-old KWPN gelding by Wynton and owned by Rowan O’Riley. Grade III is for riders who have severe impairments in both lower limbs with minimal or no impairment of the trunk or moderate impairments of the upper and lower limbs and trunk. Some riders in Grade III may use a wheelchair. Hart is originally from Pittsburgh, PA, and moved to Wellington, FL. “I have loved this horse from the moment I saw his video on YouTube. Every year in late January, the United States PRE (USPRE) Association hosts a week-long event which focuses entirely on promoting the Spanish PRE breeds within the United States.

This year, USPRE Week will be held from January 22-27, 2019 in Wellington, Florida. Wellington has long been the epicenter for premiere international riding competitions and even earned the name “Equestrian Disneyland” for horse aficionados. USPRE proudly invites all members, as well as PRE lovers everywhere, to enjoy a world class program of activities related to these Spanish horses.

One of the biggest parties of the entire equestrian season will be the USPRE Week kickoff party, held Wednesday, January 23 at 6 pm in the Global VIP Tent. The party boasts a number of unique moments with a variety of activities designed for the enjoyment of all PRE fans.

This year’s party centers around the theme “Wanna Dance.” Partygoers will enjoy food, drinks and an entire night of performances by both professional dancers and PRE horses to classic American dance music featuring ‘Patrick Swayze’, hits by Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston as well as new favorites from the Greatest Showman and Camila Cabello. Special musical guest Cassie Ortiz, winner of American Equestrians Got Talent (AEGT) 2017 will also perform.

Among the guests will be Mr. Jose Juan Morales Fernandez, President of ANCCE and Mr. Manolo Gonzalez, Executive Vice President of ANCCE.

Thursday morning, coffee and croissants will be provided at Horses and Hounds Farm. A seminar will follow discussing the metabolic health of PRE horses given by Dr. Robert P. Boswell, DMV, PA and James Gilchrist (Farrier). The focus of this seminar will be sharing knowledge and experience regarding the prevention and treatment of Laminitis in the PRE.

Thursday evening at the International Polo Club will be the annual USPRE Member Dinner. The 2018 Annual Awards for top members and breeders will be presented at that time. Tickets may be purchased through the USPRE website, www.usprea.com.

On the morning of Friday, January 25, Olympic rider Jose Daniel Martin Dockx and 4* Judge Juan Carlos Campos will hold a seminar ‘Preparing the Young Horse for FEI Competition: Selection and Training.’ Both speakers will explain their impressions and experiences on the World Breeding Dressage Championship for Young Horses. This seminar will be held at Hampton Green Farms.

To close out USPRE Week, the audience is invited to enjoy the electric atmosphere of the Friday Night Stars Freestyle. Prior to the awards presentation, Javier Ruiz Garrido from the Royal Riding School of Ronda will take the center line with Batidor X for a long-lining/handling demonstration.

All in all, an entertainment “dance-stravaganza” is promised for the five-day long USPRE Week. We hope to see you all dancing alongside these purebred Spanish horses in Wellington!

personality and his intelligence,” said Hart about El Corona Texel. “He’s quite a fiery horse, but he’s an incredibly kind horse. I love how we can have a true conversation when we’re riding, and it just makes it a very unique, special partnership.”

“Marlene Whittaker put the freestyle together for me, and we worked really hard on that one,” continued Hart of her freestyle music and choreography. “It’s actually the one that we rode at [the 2018 FEI World Equestrian Games], so it’s a special freestyle for us. We actually all played [the music] for him so he could have a little bit of input. He would just be like, ‘Oh yeah’ and he’d start to get a little more exuberant, and we were like, ‘Okay, Tex likes this one!’”

Hart has been coming to AGDF for seven years and said, “I love having such a great facility for the 12 weeks. They have shows on the weekend, and we can just come and do a test and then go home. Having that availability, and in addition having the big three-stars and the four-star and the freestyles under the lights, that variety of atmosphere so that you can do a smaller national show or you can do a big three-star all within your backyard, is fantastic.”

This week at the International Polo Club Palm Beach, the Ylvisaker Cup tournament continues with games taking place both Saturday and Sunday. Last weekend saw multiple matches with wins by teams Pilot, Dutta Corp, Patagones, and La Indiana. Last Sunday was also our first rosé day of the season! One lucky group in the Pavilion was chosen as the winners of a bottle of Veuve Clicquot for their stylish pink ensembles. Be sure to join us for the next Rosé Day on Sunday, February 17, in the Pavilion for a chance to win!

The highlight match of this week will take place on Sunday, January 27, at 3 p.m. on U.S. Polo Assn. Field 1. Join us for a delicious brunch in the Pavilion with tables overlooking the match or reserve a table in the brand-new Celebrity Cruises® Polo Lounge. Other ticket options include general admission, stadium seating, and tailgate spots. All tickets for Sunday can be purchased online at www.internationalpoloclub.com.

CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT YOUR SHOW EXPERIENCES AND THE HORSES YOU HAVE HERE TO COMPETE WITH?

I have two horses myself: my 13-year-old gelding and 18-year-old mare. The mare does the Grand Prix. We did the U25 last year, so we are breaking into the Grand Prix. We have done a few little shows to see how the season goes. The other one is moving up to Prix St. Georges, so hopefully we will get him out by the end of the year.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN COMING TO AGDF AND WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART?

This is my sixth year coming here. It is really cool coming here. Everyone feels like family; you really get to know everyone. It is so calming at the same time [for] such a big environment, but it feels like home to me now, so I can feel relaxed about showing for once.

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST IN THE REST OF THE CIRCUIT?

Definitely the competitions and getting to know everyone again. It’s a great community to get to know everyone, you are so stuck with everyone, [but] in a great way. I’m looking forward to getting to ride my horses and getting the most out of the opportunities offered down here.

WHO DO YOU LOOK UP TO MOST IN THE DRESSAGE WORLD?

Obviously Laura (Graves). I got to know her a little bit when I was staying at Havensafe Farm. She is super nice, and I respect how she cares for her animals. I also look up to my trainer, Christopher Hickey.

WHEN YOU ARE NOT RIDING AND COMPETING WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING?

That time is very limited, but hanging out with friends and getting dinner, going to movies and chilling, nothing too crazy.
