GRACE LUTHERAN CHURCH (Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod) LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS December 1, 2010 THE ORDER OF EVENING PRAYER FOR THE WEEK OF THE FIRST SUNDAY IN ADVENT PRAYER UPON ENTERING THE CHURCH Almighty God, You have loved me with an everlasting love. You showed that love for me and for all by sending forth Jesus to be my substitute. He is my righ teousness. Keep me steadfast in my faith even as by Your Holy Spirit’s power I seek to live my life showing forth my praise to You for Your goodness and mercy shown to me. I pray this in Jesus’ ho ly name. Amen AS WE GATHER In 1852 a Lutheran pastor, August Rische, wrote the hymn “God Loves Me Dearly.” While it may be best known as a children’s hymn, we are all God’s children and so it is a hymn that speaks to all of us who by grace have been made God’s heirs, adopted by Him in the waters of Holy Baptism. Pastor Rische wrote this hymn for youth who were basically abandoned to the streets. He wanted to establis h a rescue home for them. Above all he wanted to comfort them with the beautiful Gospel promise that “God love me dearly, loves even me.” During this season of Advent our mid-week theme is “God Loves Me Dearly.” The Scriptures decla re that “Go d so loved the world that He gave His only-begotten Son that whoever believes in Him will not perish but h ave everlasting life.” Theologically we call this “objective j ustification.” This is what God h as done for all. This becomes our person ally, “subjective justification,” as the Lord by the power of the Holy Spirit makes our hearts His home. So we look to the Gospel an d its promises applied t o our lives through His Word, Holy Baptism and Holy Communion (the Means of Grace) to see how the Lord makes this personal for each one of us. We personally rejoice in what He has do ne for us and then collectively we gather together to sing praises to God, offering Him our thanks, seeking to grow in His grace and walking in His ways to the glory of His holy name. - 2 - Prelude  Fugue on the Magnificat (First Tone) - Johann Pachelbel Ringing of the Church Bell Service of Light Stand Versicles P The Spirit and the Church cry out: C Come, Lord Jesus. AS WE GATHER

In 1852 a Lutheran pastor, August Rische, wrote the hymn“God Loves Me Dearly.” While it may be best known as achildren’s hymn, we are all God’s children and so it is a hymnthat speaks to all of us who by grace have been made God’s

During this season of Advent our mid-week theme is “GodLoves Me Dearly.” The Scriptures declare that “God so loved the

world that He gave His only-begotten Son that whoever believesin Him will not perish but have everlasting life.” Theologicallywe call this “objective justification.” This is what God has donefor all. This becomes our personally, “subjective justification,”as the Lord by the power of the Holy Spirit makes our hearts Hishome. Sermon  Jeremiah 23:5–6

“God’s Love Covers Me with Christ”

Catechesis

P What is Confession?

CCCC Confession has two parts. First, that we confess our sins, and second,

that we receive absolution, that is, forgiveness, from the pastor as

from God Himself, not doubting, but firmly believing that by it our

sins are forgiven before God in heaven.

P What sins should we confess?

CCCC Before God we should plead guilty of all sins, even those we are not

aware of, as we do in the Lord's Prayer; but before the pastor we

should confess only those sins which we know and feel in our hearts.

P Which are these?

CCCC Consider your place in life according to the Ten Commandments.

Are you a father, mother, son, daughter, husband, wife, or worker?Have you been disobedient, unfaithful, or lazy? Have you been hot-

tempered, rude, or quarrelsome? Have you hurt someone by your

words or deeds? Have you stolen, been negligent, wasted anything,

or done any harm?

Collect For Peace

P O God, from whom come all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works, give to us, Your servants, that peace which the world cannot

give, that our hearts may be set to obey Your commandments and also

that we, being defended from the fear of our enemies, may live in peaceand quietness; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and

reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C Amen

Luther's Evening Prayer

C I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear

Son, that You have graciously kept me this day; and I pray that

You would forgive me all my sins where I have done wrong, and

graciously keep me this night. For into Your hands I commend

myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be

with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen

Lord's Prayer

C Our Father who art in heaven,

hallowed be Thy name,

Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven;

give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses

as we forgive those who trespass against us;and lead us not into temptation,

- 12 -

but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom

and the power and the glory

forever and ever. Amen
