Sundays in Advent
Hope, Peace, Joy, Love! On Sunday, December 3rd, we light the first candle on the Advent Wreath with our hearts and minds turned to hope. We continue through the season with peace, joy and love. As we anticipate the celebration of Christmas with the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ, we are reminded of these gifts that shine as beacons in a world of despair, war, sorrow and hate.
5
For God so loved the world that he gave his one
and only Son, that
whoever believes in him shall not perish but have
eternal life.
John 3:16 NIV
Wednesdays in Advent—The gifts of Advent
Mid-Week Worship Opportunity-- The Gifts of Advent
A gift is given freely and offered in love.
In the weeks before Christmas, we often
race around finding just the right gifts for
friends and family. The season of Advent
is itself a gift—a time set apart to prepare
our hearts for the coming of Christ. We
give thanks for God’s gift to us in the
baby of Bethlehem.
You are invited to a 45 minute Mid-Week Worship experience that in-
cludes the gift of Holy Communion.
Wednesday December 6: The Gift of Patience
Wednesday December 13: The Gift of Hope
The worship service begins at 7 p.m. Come early for dinner. Food will be served at 6 p.m. Children’s choir with activities begins at 7 p.m.

Zion Quilter News
Zion quilters wanted to do a service project for the One God-Our Hands event at church. We de-cided we wanted to help veterans, so we made 100+ pillowcases that were delivered to the Mar-tinsburg VA home around 2 weeks ago. At the One God-Our Hands event here at Zion we decided to use the assembly line method. Some of the ladies measured and cut, some ladies sewed and we were even able to corral several members to iron them throughout the process. We contin-ued to work till after 4:00 p.m. The next couple Tuesdays we continued to make more pillow-cases. The fabric was donated by the various quilters. Also taken to the VA home was a number of lap robes that were done in patriotic colors. The coordinator at VA was most appreciative. He said that there were a number of patients that never have anyone visit, and they receive nothing in the mail. Last year we made pillowcases for the children at the University of MD hospital cancer center. Both endeavors were found to be heartwarming and rewarding.
Quilters: Alexa Masser, Diane Shafer, Sharon Thomas, Pam Gleason, Jeanne Mauro, Roberta Harper, Liz Kurtz, Pat Hansen, Debbie Smith, Ruby Pyles, Evelyn Vollmer
Anyone interested in learning to quilt or to sew are welcome on Tue mornings 9 – 2 in the social room. All are welcome.

Zion’s Operation Christmas Child a Huge success!
The People of Zion have shown 254 children the generosity in their hearts and their love of God’s children
in donating Christmas Shoeboxes for children around the world.
This was another wonderful effort of collecting boxes as in previous years, and all are to be commended. A
special thanks goes out to Linda Huckleberry and Connie Ahalt who did a wonderful job of heading up
Zion’s efforts in Operation Christmas Child.
We also want to mention all those who helped load up the vehicles to transport the boxes for shipment. (It took many loads!)
Merry Christmas to all who participated!

Down in a lonely manger, the humble Christ was born; and God sent us salvation that blessed Christmas morn!
My beloved, all:
Christmas is a time of joyous surprise as we receive God’s gift of hope yet again. The darkness, though threatening, has not over-whelmed us. In bread and cup, body and blood, the gift of Christ comes given and shed for you, for me and for all. In a simple, al-most hidden way, hope breaks into our hearts, our lives and our world anew.
The joy of such a simple, subtle surprise stands in stark contrast to the let-down experienced by so many of us. Gail Ramshaw once put it succinctly: “Santa Claus promised us perpetual happiness, a mythic family gathering, mounds of toys, all of our heart’s desires. But it didn’t happen. Heaven didn’t establish itself in my living room this year. We got sick on the eggnog...”
Because Christmas is for so many a painful time, a season of disappointment and lone-liness, it is important for the church’s celebrations and holy day observances to be dif-ferent.
Let this season of hope be a time of telling the truth in love. Let it be a time to center our lives in prayer, the Word made flesh, a holy communion with God and neighbor. Let us remind one another, that though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is born among us, still the ruler yet. Let us receive the gift; and be in Christ, gift to one another and the world.
Praying with you that our days and our deeds in this Christmas season and throughout 2018 will be marked with peace. I am grateful for the privilege of serving Christ with the Pastors, Deacons and Lay Leaders of our Delaware-Maryland Synod; may we wit-ness faithfully to the love of God in Jesus Christ, our Emmanuel.
...Go tell it on the mountain, over the hills and ev’rywhere; go tell it on the mountain that Jesus Christ is born!
The Rev. William (Bill) Gohl, Jr., Bishop
Delaware-Maryland Synod, ELCA

Surprise and Honor Our Homebound This Christmas
Is your family able to set aside a short time to bring Christmas cheer to one of our homebound members?
Select an ornament and card from the basket in the Sanctuary windowsill…
Each card has a homebound member’s name and address on the back. Set a time to stop by for a brief visit to bring your Christmas cheer and ornament. Our homebound would enjoy your visit as you Share Christ’s Love - One Generation to Another! (If the person does not answer the door you can leave it at the door - be sure to write a personal greeting with your names!)
Ornaments will be available on the weekend of December 9th and 10th. You can take more than one card/ornament and visit other home-bound members.
HOME ALONE!
A lot of men & women live alone. Some
older and some not. The one thing they
all have in common is that when you live
alone and if you should fall, who will
know; how will you get help? Even if
your family lives close by that does not
necessarily mean they are going to
call or see you every day. I feel that
everyone that lives alone should have
a cell phone that they carry in their
pocket at all times or wear a medical
alert. I know you don't think it will hap-
pen to you, but it could. It has happened
to people I know. Think about this and
put the cell phone in your pocket at all
times or look into getting a medical alert.
