Honey’s Happenings…

Welcome to autumn! I hope you have had an opportunity to check out the beautiful Rocky

Mountain colors!

Many of you joined us for our Colorado Chapter September Professional Development dinner meeting and had the opportunity to hear local businessman, Jake Jabs, share his business

experience and vision. His Montana music store success allowed him to retire the first time

at 30! His transition to the furniture business was very enlightening.

I have had American Furniture Warehouse deliver purchases, but I had not considered the vast distribution and trucking business processes that Mr. Jabs has put in place.

Consider this…. AFW maintains its own fleet of trucks; long haul to local delivery. Vehicles are purchased with drivers in mind.

Trucks are automatic transmissions; over-night cabs’ sleeping area mattresses are changed immediately to be of better quality

than standard bedding; Sirius ™ radios are included. The distribution system is a profit center; it makes sense to invest strategically. Back-haul contracting is equally important as primary deliveries; in fact empty trailers are strategically stationed

to manage loads. AFW also relies on internal resources to keep cost down, (such as In-house videography for commercials). I thoroughly enjoyed the evening!

On another distribution note: Have you started your holiday shopping yet?! There are less than 100 days to Christmas. (That gives some of you 99 procrastination days left!) While my brain is not ready to get on-board with holiday planning,

I know countless others who are already working on their holiday plans! Manufacturers, distributers, planners, and supply

chain colleagues everywhere are executing on their planned “WHAT needs to be WHERE and WHEN!

Have you been thinking about brushing-up on your supply chain knowledge? Be sure to check out the Colorado APICS education courses in this month’s Front Range News. Classes for CPIM, CSCP and CLTD certifications are available!

We have great programs are coming your way, as well. I look forward to seeing you at the October Professional Development Meeting (PDM) and upcoming tour.

Happy Halloween!

Best Regards,

Mark your calendars now for the 2016/2017 Professional Development Meetings. October 12th -:- November 09th

What is SRM?

The 14th Edition of the APICS Dictionary describes Supplier Relationship Management SRM as: A comprehensive approach to managing an enterprise's interactions with the organizations that supply the goods and services

the enterprise uses. The goal of SRM is to streamline and make more effective the processes between an enterprise and its suppliers. SRM is often associated with automating procure-to-pay business processes, evaluating supplier performance, and

exchanging information with suppliers. An e-procurement system often comes under the umbrella of a supplier relationship management family of applications.

A random Google search describes SRM as:

Supplier Relationship Management SRM - is the discipline of strategically planning for, and managing, all interactions with

third party organizations that supply goods and/or services to an organization in order to maximize the value of those interactions.

What are Students saying about APICS Education in Colorado?

“While I attended APICS classes, I was quick to realize the valuable resources being introduced. As a professional in the supply chain world, I was able to immediately apply a number of the topics presented by APICS to our day-to-day activities. APICS has set me apart from my peers, as I am now able to present ideas and tactics that are not readily understood by everyone. I am grateful for the knowledge I have received and am excited of the possibilities going forward” Dan Clement, Distribution Center Manger, Brewers Supply

”The APICS classes were the best way I could have studied for the CPIM testing. They were very convenient

to take while I worked, even during the busy part of the year. Eight hour classes may seem like a lot on a Saturday but the instructors are so energetic and dedicated to you understanding the material that the time flies by. By the end of each class I had a brand new understanding of concepts I wasn’t able to grasp by just using the study material alone. One of the coolest aspects of APICS was the community. The classroom consisted of peers from all different walks of life and job perspectives and the out of classroom activities introduced me to even more people of the APICS community.“ Aaron Littlefield, Manufacturing Engineer, Stolle Machinery Co.

“As a young professional looking for a way to further my career and knowledge of Supply Chain, I found

these classes from the local APICS Colorado Chapter. The instructors are very experienced in the supply chain industry and

teach in a way that makes the material easy to understand and fun to learn. The classes have helped me in my current job

complete projects with confidence. There were also great students that helped me learn from their experiences as well as build

many friendships. I would highly recommend these courses to anyone new to the supply chain industry, or even those that

have been in the industry for a while, anyone who deals with the supply chain of a company. It will help tremendously. I plan

on getting the CSCP certification in the future and will take the classes from these instructors, there’s just no other way.”

Joseph McQueen, CPIM, Supply Chain Analyst, Charter Communications

“I have been working in manufacturing since the early 1980s. Since the mid-1990s I have intended to get my CPIM designation but have never found the time or proper study methods that would give me the confidence to take the test. I attended the Spring 2016 CPIM classes provided by APICS Colorado Chapter 81 and found the classes, study materials, and instructors to be first rate. In July I received my CPIM certificate and I only regret not doing it years earlier. Even though my jobs never “required” this certification I cannot think of any of these jobs I would not have been better at, advanced quicker and just been a more valuable employee had I acquired this knowledge sooner. In addition, the people that I met in class and the experiences they shared only served to make this that much more of an enriching experience.” Ken Fiore, CPIM, Warehouse Manager, Spark Home

APICS CSCP exam. Their knowledge and work related experience in the Global Supply Chain industry was a great help in teaching the

The first year there were 15 to 20 members, with membership growing to 36 by 1968. In the 1980's, membership hit its peak of 800+. Fifty-five years after its inception, the Chapter is growing again with nearly 400 members. Our current President Honey Johnson is the 38th president. Many presidents have served multiple terms. We appreciate the dedicated effort of all of the Chapters presidents, board officers, and volunteers both past and present.
