Two armies of French baguettes face each other in a stand-off as tomato bombs explode, an egg beater hovers over fleeing troops and molasses-blood splatters on fork-soldiers as they charge Père Ubu. Anything goes as Poland’s fate is sealed on a tabletop! Multiple film references spice things up as two performers hammer-out a small-scale fresco of grandiose buffoonery.

UBU IN OBJECT THEATREUbu is undeniably comfortable surrounded by kitchen utensils that double as gorging tools and weapons to annihilate the “sagouins”. The banality of the objects dramatically underscores the grotesque nature of the characters: Captain Bordure, embodied by a standard hammer, is forever stuck in his rigid stance, forced to repeat the same ridiculous expressions over and over. The Object’s expressive limits force the creators to focus on the dramatic action rather than on the psychological development of the characters. The actor-puppeteers (in full view) appeal to the audience’s intelligence and imagination by conveying a second degree to the storyline.

OVER 900 PERFORMANCESThis adaptation of Ubu Roi has garnered much praise – the objects’ raw form and the performance’s frenetic pace are perfectly suited for Alfred Jarry’s cruel farce. Since its creation, the show has been performed over 900 times in 15 COUNTRIES (Canada, France, Germany, U.K, Ireland, Mexico, Spain, Brazil, Bulgaria, Romania, Russia, Belgium, Turkey, Cuba, Finland).

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS• Duration of the show: 75 minutes

• Playing area (minimum)- Length: 3,5 meters - Width: 2 meters- Stage elevation from the ground: maximum 30 centimeters

• Audience- 100 spectators if the rows are properly different in altitude- 70 spectators if the seats are formed like in a cabaret (with tables)- Frontal audience only

• Required equipment: - 3 tables (90 cm x 60 cm, 73 cm of height) covered with black sheets. They will be used for objects on stage. - Small desk litter (waterproof) - Upstage black curtain

• Light- Entrance of the audience: cabaret-style lighting, filtered lighting during the show- On stage: everything is done by the actors/manipulators.- 2 electrical plugs next to the stage (110V or 220V depending on the country) and 2 extension cords of 5 meters.

THÉÂTRE DE LA PIRE ESPÈCELa Pire Espèce is a brotherhood of merry demiurges, artisans of the extraordinary who are firm believers in hybrids and interminglings. Inspired by the art of clowns, by fairground barkers and puppeteers, its theatre combines raw materials with unbridled imagination, baroque plenitude with surgical precision.

Since 1999, Pire Espèce has been borrowing techniques from different disciplines such as puppetry, theatre of objects, clowning, cabaret and street theatre. By exploring the creative process, it explores stage conventions and the rules of dramatic narration, and seeks to establish a close complicity with the audience.

La Pire Espèce is also nineteen original works, one exhibition, two street theatre pieces, four cabarets and more than 1800 performances. Half of that number were performed abroad during recurrent tours in Europe and around the world. Its work include also three Spanish translations, three English translations and a bold adaptation for both the deaf and the non-hearing impaired, five co-productions in quebec and in Europe and several professional workshops for theatre artists and teachers.

ITS RESTLESS MINDS

OLIVIER DUCAS - Co-Artistic DirectorOlivier Ducas studied acting at the National Theatre School of Canada. His decisive encounter with Francis Monty led in 1999 to the founding of Théâtre de la Pire Espèce, for which they act as co-artistic director. He also cofounded Theatre Aux Écuries (2005) a creation center and theatre venue in Montreal and was one of Carte Premiere’s initiators. A playwright, actor, director and object/puppet manipulator, he is the co-creator of the company’s productions (Ubu on the Table, Perseus, Gestes impies et rites sacrés, Die Reise, Futur intérieur and L’effet Hyde) that have toured across Canada, Europe, Mexico and Brazil over the last 20 years. In 2008, he single-handedly wrote and directed Roland, la vérité du vainqueur, a show for two actor-storytellers for teen audiences. In 2014, he repeated the experience with Cities, adding solo performer to his list of credits. He is currently working on the Contes zen du potager, a series of short, minimalist forms, where vegetables display all their substance. Ducas is a leading object theatre director in Canada. Research in object and image-based playwriting is at the core of his actions as a creator. In addition to his creative work, Ducas also gives object theatre classes for professionals, theatre school professors and theatre students.

FRANCIS MONTY - Co-Artistic DirectorA 1997 graduate of the playwrighting program at the National Theatre School of Canada, Francis Monty is a theatrical jack of all trades – directing, clowning, puppetry and his many writing projects all intertwine. In 1999 he co-founded Théâtre de la Pire Espèce with Olivier Ducas, and both share the position of artistic director. He has co-created many of the company’s plays, including Ubu sur la table and Persée. A number of his plays have travelled across Canada, and to Brazil and Europe, including Par les temps qui rouillent, Déclownestration, Traces de cloune, Léon le nul, Ernest T. and Nous sommes mille en équilibre fragile. He received the 2005 Masque award for best original script for Romances et karaoké, the 2014 Cochon dramatique for best original script for Petit bonhomme en papier carbone at the Gala des Cochons d’or and Ernest T. was nominated for best original script for young audiences for the Louise LaHaye Award.
