Academic Review DayOne of the most important days in our Term 1 Calendar is our Academic Review Day scheduled for Thursday 16 March. It is really important that every student with a Parent or Caregiver attends for their scheduled interview. One of the reasons that the academic achievement in our school has climbed in recent years has been because of the valuable planning and sharing of information that takes place at the interviews held on this day.

These meetings are essential for academic success as well as good academic and career path-ways planning.

As in previous years each student will be issued with a specific time on that day when they can meet with each house group tutor. There will be no formal lessons on this day.

Details of your interview time will be released by Mr Dalton, Deputy Principal – Teaching and Learning closer to the time but I would ask that at this point you diary the date so that we have an excellent response on the day. I have set for each House Group Tutor a 100% attendance target and it would be great if we could get as close as possible to that target.

On this momentous occasion, I have been given the signal honour to offer insights into what has

been and what will be a great journey here at Raukura.

On behalf of my fellow students I would like to pre-acknowledge the untiring efforts that will be

expended by many people throughout the duration of our time here at Rotorua Boys High School.

Firstly, Mr Grinter and the staff who will help us to overcome obstacles, attain goals and whose

ever ready suggestions and belief will help us to succeed on our educational journey.

To our families, mums, dads, nannies, koros, aunties and uncles, whose patient love, unstinting

support and never ending bank balance will enable us on our lifes journey.

Now to you, my fellow students, brothers. Welcome. Despite the travails and difficulties we will

experience on the way, lets together eliminate the negative and accentuate the positive. Your nat-

ural intellect and the pursuit of greatness here at Raukura will, without a doubt, see you all reach

Page 7: Ad Astra Per Aspera Whaia Te Iti Kahurangi To The Stars ... · Saturday 29 April First XV vs St Peter’s College (Auck) 12pm (Home) Monday 1 May Term 2 Commences Wednesday 3 May

your desired zenith and will foresee the emergence of future leaders, role models and exemplars.

I’d also like to acknowledge our new Year 9 students, International students and also new students

who have transferred from another school to continue their educational journey here with us at

Raukura. Welcome. I know all too well how daunting this all seems. I came to Raukura as a year

11 student leaving the safety and comfort of my very small and rural wharekura. I had no idea how

my journey would eventuate, all I knew is that if I was to step out of the box and leave what I knew

was comfortable and safe, I’d better make the sacrifice worthy. I armed myself with a small list of

goals and the greatest attitude I could muster and set out on my new journey. Although my goals

were high, I believed in myself, my family believed in me and my teachers and friends guided me.

These were my goals:

• Pass year 11 with Excellence

• Pass year 12 with Excellence

• Make the XV Squad

• Perform for Raukura

• Be a role model for my fellow students and siblings

• Make my family proud

• Become Head Boy of Raukura in 2017

I am proud to say that I have achieved all of my goals and more. I encourage you, in fact I chal-

lenge you to do the the same. Be substantial, stand out amongst the crowd, set expectational

goals and shoot for the moon. Because if you miss the moon at least you will be amongst the

stars. One day, one of you will be right here where I’m standing now, delivering this same speech

with a very similar message. Let yourself be that one!

It is said that humility is the truest measure of a man, of a rangatira, of a chief. The co-alescence

of humility with our natural flair, skill and intellect will mean that each and everyone of our stars

will shine bright and be a beacon for future generations. Our ancestors have been shining lights

for us, their light, along with the many who have taken their final journey, will never cease to shine

or be obliterated from memory. At this very moment, they are looking down upon us smiling with

pride, looking down on their children, beaming in the radiance of our own light.

Mr Grinter, staff, ladies and gentlemen, whanau and friends, brothers, I have attempted to capture

the very essence of our journey here at Raukura firstly in a short salutation in my mother tongue

to acknowledge the greatness of the Māori language matching our being and potential to come. It

has been a remarkable opportunity to stand before you all here today delivering the welcome ad-

dress as your Head Boy for 2017. For those of you who don’t know who I am, my name is Rehua

Selwyn. I am merely the mouthpiece for an outstanding prefect squad for 2017. I would like to ac-

knowledge Nathan Kennah as our Deputy Head Boy and like our sea fareing ancestors, together

we will endeavour to steer our waka through turbulent waters, ultimately settling peacefully at our

final destination.

In closing I’d like to leave you with a few lines from my koro’s favourite song who is an Old Boy of

our school and whose prefect badge I proudly wear today:

To dream the impossible dream

To fight the unbeatable foe

To bear with unbearable sorrow

And to run where the brave dare not go

To right the unrightable wrong

And to love pure and chaste from afar

To try when your arms are too weary

To reach the unreachable star

No reira, tēna kōutou, tēna kōutou, tēna tātou katoa.

Rehua Selwyn, Raukura Head Boy 2017.

At Rotorua Boys’ High School we strongly recommend the use of a digital device to support learning. In the junior school we are in our second year of a targeted 1-1 iPad initiative and it is our vision that every Year 9 and Year 10 student will be able to learn with their own iPad. Technology has revolutionized the way we think, work, and play. Technology, when integrated into the curriculum, revolutionizes the learning process.

More and more studies show that technology integration in the curriculum improves students’ learning processes and outcomes. We live in a rapidly evolving world and students today need to be digitally literate and flexible to succeed in the 21st Century workplace. There is considerable research that concludes many students of today will find jobs that haven’t been invented yet. Therefore, the emphasis on schools is to develop 21st Century Skills such as collaboration, communication, critical thinking, problem solving, digital and information literacy, adaptability and creativity.

Bringing technology into the classroom has many significant benefits ranging from increased student engagement, a richer learning context, increased collaboration, access to material previously not possible and increased ability to cater for various learning styles. It is for these reasons and many more, that that Rotorua Boys’ High School strongly recommends the use of an iPad to support learning.

Currently we have close to 300 students taking advantage of a learning environment enriched with an iPad. For those families that would like to have their son join this initiative, there is still the opportunity through our commercial partner, Noel Leeming. The iPads can be purchased outright, or through a 24 month finance plan. If you require more details, contact us at school or discuss in store at Noel Leeming.

Please note that this offer is available to senior students too.

From the Desk of the Deputy PrincipalTeaching & Learning

Students can also bring an existing iPad from home, but these must be configured on our school network. This will ensure these iPads have the same advantages that the new iPads have. Please be advised that there is $40 fee for the MDM and Apps to be installed on these iPads.

Digital CitizenshipA focus of this initiative is digital citizenship, which is the responsible use of technology. Your child will learn digital skills, ethics, etiquette, and online safety. These are important aspects of participating in today’s world.

Safe and SecureTo maintain a safe and secure learning environment, a filtered Internet connection will be provided for students. They will not be permitted to use a personal broadband connection such as a 3G/4G phone network. As well, students will only be able to use their device under the direct supervision of their teacher. Any unauthorized use can result in the device being confiscated, searched, and privileges being revoked.

ResponsibilityWhile the school will make every effort to ensure all devices are secure, ultimately, students are responsible for their device. They must bring it fully charged to school. Similar to other personally owned items, the school is not liable for loss, damage, misuse, or theft. Participation in this initiative is voluntary. For more information about digital citizenship, cyber safety and school expectations pertaining to device usage in school, please visit our Digital Citizenship and Cyber Safety website. This can be accessed via the Curriculum page of the school website or using this link: https://sites.google.com/a/rbhs.school.nz/rbhs-digital-citizenship/

‘Our students, trhough the use of digital technologies, will be offered future-focused learning opportunities, to ensure they are equipped with the skills to be successful global citizens.” RBHS Learning with Digital Technology Vision

Academic Review DayOne of the key strategies our school utilises to ensure students meet their academic potential is the Academic Review process. At the start of the year your son developed a number of goals and throughout the year your son’s House Group Teacher will work alongside him to monitor and encourage him to achieve these goals. We believe that this process has been a key factor in improving student outcomes in recent years. Academic Review days are your opportunity to join us at school to discuss your son’s progress in an individual, positive conversation with his House Group Teacher.

This year we will again be holding two Academic Review Days. The first is on Thursday 16th March and all parents are expected to come with their son. Your engagement with this process is vital to ensure the most positive outcomes for your son this year. The second Academic Review Day will be early in Term 3 and will offer a chance to review progress towards his goals.

Term 1 Interim ReportsPlease be aware that Term 1 Progress Reports progress reports will be available for collection on Academic Review Day. It is important to note that it is school policy to write reports using each student’s legal name. If however you prefer us to write your son’s report using his preferred name, this can easily be arranged. In order for this to happen, you need to contact the main office or your son’s House Group teacher and inform them of your preference.

Attendance NewsAbsenteeismStudents, parents, and staff are continually working together to improve the attendance rate for our school. An emphasis on being at school regularly and punctually will ultimately drive toward enhancing the academic profile for each student. Should your son not be attending school for any length of time, there are a number of options below which can be utilised to inform the school of his absence:1. Contact Absentee Hotline – (07) 349 5137

2. Phone or email the Dean

3. Written explanation for House Group Teacher on his return to school

Early NotificationTo improve the timeframe in which Rotorua Boys’ High School notifies you of your son’s absence, we are now operating an Early Notification system whereby Parents / Caregivers will receive a message via text or email informing that your son is absent from school without explanation. The message will be sent on the morning of absence and his records automatically adjusted on return message from Parents / caregivers. To enable the programme to function effectively, please notify the school office to confirm the mobile and/or email address you would like this message delivered to.

Attendance Data In reviewing our annual data, it is evident that students are attending RBHS more frequently than students of the same age, sex, ethnicity and decile rating nationally.

What an amazing start to the year. The Year 9 boys have transitioned beautifully into High School. They look fantastic in their uniforms and seem eager to settle down and start learning. Thank you for your support in ensuring this transition was smooth, and for setting your son up for success by having their uniform and stationery needs organised.

Your son has been issued with his own individual timetable. These are really important in ensuring your son knows where he needs to be, at what time and who his teacher is for each subject. It would also be helpful for you to have a copy of this timetable. Ask him to share it with you so you are aware of what subjects he has this term and in the future. Having their timetable glued to some cardboard, laminated, or as a screenshot on their device, can save a lot of time and despair.

Your son’s attendance will directly impact on their achievement at school this year. Please ensure your son is at school EVERY day, unless there is a justified reason for his absence. In this case, please ensure you inform either his House Group teacher, or myself, as to why your son is away.

You will be able to track your son’s attendance and achievement this year if you have access to the internet. At our first Academic Review Day (16 March) your son’s House Group teacher will give you a specific username and password to the website which enables you to see exactly how many credits they have, as well as monitor their attendance. A very useful tool for parents!!

My role is to liaise between yourself, your son and his teachers. If I can be of any assistance please don’t hesitate to contact me. I look forward to meeting you in the future.

From the Deans

From the Year 9 Dean Ms M Hartley

From the Year 10 Dean Mrs K HemanaKia Ora and welcome to our Year 10 students of 2017.

My name is Kelly Hemana and I am the Year 10 Dean here at Raukura. I was born and raised in Rotorua and have been working in the education sector since 1999. I enjoy working alongside this particular group of boys and this year is no exception.

This year the goals for Year 10 have been co-constructed with our wonderful team of House Group Tutors.

Based on the results in 2016 we have decided upon the following 2017 Goals for Year 10:• Improve attendance rates from 2016• Students will attend every class• Those students who did not attain their Junior Certificate in 2016 – reward in a timely manner

for assessment submission and success• Expect 100% submission of assessments – non-submission to be referred to the Dean for

catch up sessions after school at Te Honoa Toi.

Year 10 is a year when some students struggle to see the value in school work and they think that their Junior Certificate is not worthwhile. This could not be further from the truth. The preparation that the students embark upon this year will pay dividends as they prepare for their NCEA journey next year. I cannot stress how important this preparation is. We are fortunate to have the support of Year 12 mentors to work alongside our Year 10 students to offer guidance on academic success, cultural leadership and achieving their sporting goals.

Opportunities for Year 10 students this year:• Sir Edmund Hillary Leadership Camp for a week - 40 students• Rotary Youth Programme of Enrichment for a weekend - 8 students• Pūkaki Award - 1 student• Year 10 Camp in Term 4• General Excellence - Academic, Sport, Culture & Leadership• Spirit of Raukura - one student in each core class• Top in class - each subject• Junior Certificate endorsement - Excellence (50 credits); Merit (50 Merit/Ex credits)• Level 1 credits to be offered in House Group and at Academic Review Day

Students who may require advice and guidance for future pathways will also be given an opportu-nity to attend local tertiary institutions and gain better knowledge and experience with regard to the various pathways students can take. I’m looking forward to a successful year. Please do not hesitate to contact me, either via email [email protected] or phone 3486169 ext #803, if you have any enquiries.

From the Year 11 Dean Mrs C ZilionisWelcome to the Year 11 students who are now part of the senior school.

Congratulations on the way that you are presenting your-selves by wearing your uniform correctly, a very good start to the year. The main goal for all Year 11 students is to achieve NCEA Level One. In order to do this the students need 80 credits. It is important that they get support from

home and school in order to achieve this goal. Students need to set themselves goals of how they can achieve this target and House group teachers will be working closely with your son on setting these goals. One of the key aspects of achieving their Level One NCEA is regular attendance and House group teachers and myself will be monitoring this closely. My role as a Dean is to help stu-dents achieve not only their academic goals but also to help them plan for their future pathways. As a Dean, and I am sure as parents, we want our boys to achieve to their potential in all aspects of their lives. If I can be of any assistance at any time please contact me.

Ms C Zilionis - Dean of Year [email protected]

From the Year 12 Dean Mr H Lockwood

Kia Ora and Welcome Year 12 students to 2017,

My name is Hamish Lockwood and I am the Dean of year 12. Just want-ed to start with a huge Mihi to all our Whanua of Raukura, especially to the Year 12 parents. A few key areas I will focus on this year are Attitude, Attendance, Achievement and Correct Uniform for your son. My goal this year is to have a pass rate at Level 2 of 92% plus (60 level 2 credits) and it is import-ant for you as parents, to support your son in his future pathway.

My job is to liaise with teachers, students and parents to make sure the year 12 students are on target and achieving their goals. Also to guide and direct students towards making the right deci-sions about their future pathways.Year 12 is an important year for your young man to step out of his comfort zone and strive to become a future Leader here at Raukura. There are many opportunities for students to achieve these goals and I encourage students to be involved in many extracurricular activities both in and out of school.

Academic Review day one is on Thursday 16th March. I look forward to meeting parents and stu-dents, if they have any queries or questions regarding your Son’s progress. I wish all the Year 12 students good luck and look forward to seeing your young man Excel in schooling, cultural and on the sporting arena. Nga MihiHamish Lockwood - Year 12 Dean

From the Year 13 Dean Mrs R Mudge

Welcome to the 2017 school year. Firstly congratulations to the Year 13 students on their outstanding results in NCEA Level 2 - the highest pass rate at this year level in the school’s history. Secondly, congratulations to the young men of Years’ 13 and 14, who have displayed maturity, leadership and focus in the first few weeks of the school year.

Year 13 is a challenging year, as students lay the platform for life beyond school. My role is to liaise with students, parents and teachers to ensure that students are working towards achieving what is required for the future pathway they have chosen for themselves. I work closely with House Group teachers, Mrs Wiggins in Careers and Mrs Boulton in Gateway to ensure that our boys are supported in a range of ways to achieve their goals.Year 13 is a year of opportunities - and not only in the classroom. The more involved students are in all facets of school life, the more prepared they will be for what lies beyond. The first of these is Te Wero and I look forward to spending the next two days on this journey with our young men, so that I can get to know them outside the classroom.

Please do not hesitate to contact me, either via email ( [email protected]) or phone ( 07 3486169 ext 880) if you have any concerns.

Nga mihiMrs R Mudge - Year 13 [email protected]

RecognitionI would like to express my gratitude to some of your boys. My mokopuna and I were out at Lake Okareka at ‘the cliffs’. My grandson Leyhi jumped into the lake and unfortunately hit the rocks. Two of the boys there jumped in to help him and then one of the boys carried him up the side of the hill to me. I did thank them as he gave him back to me, but I was panicking and didn’t thank them as well as I should of.

Not sure of their names etc, but there was a group of them there from 4pm onwards from Boys’ High and I know someone would know who the two jumped in. I’d also like to say what a respect-ful group of boys they were, normal happy banter and respectful to others there. Lovely to see youth so helpful and respectful. Happy to say Leyhi was playing in the Lake following the incident and didn’t have any discomfort from his experience. Maybe you could share it to your newsletter, as too often as a society we don’t give credit where credit is due.

In closing thank you to a group of intelligent, respectful young men, we have a brighter future if our rangatahi are all as kind and as respectful as you all were.

Nga mihi,Brydie Wharerau-Tukiwaho, Leyhi Marks-Thompson, Blake and Johdeci Te Kani, Tessa Marks Mum) and our whanau katao.

LeadershipTE WERO

They left as fellow students, they returned as brothers. It was a gruelling two days for the Year 13 of Rotorua Boys’ High School as they took on the annual Te Wero event, a men-tal and physical challenge that serves as a platform for their final year and encourages them to work together as one. During the two days, they ran more than 40km to the summit of Mount Ngongotaha and Mara-ma Point. Cycled 60km to the Blue Lake and through the Redwood Forest before running a final 5km back to school where they were welcomed back by the entire student body.“This obviously was a physical challenge, but it was also a challenge as a group, coming together

as a group and building strong bonds and relationships within the group for the good of the school this year,” school principal Chris Grinter said. “I said to them before they left that the quality of any school year, for a school like ours comes down to the quality of the Year 13s. We want you to be well lead by this group,” Mr Grinter said. Year 13 student, Mikey Ratahi-Tetley said it was one of the hard-est things they’ve been through.“Boys, what I can say, the last time I talked in front of the school, I spoke about stepping out of your comfort zone… we were booted out of our comfort zone,” he said. “Nothing was comfortable. Biking up hills, the running, all we’ve been through has been hard for the boys but I’m immensely proud of what they’ve done, I’m overwhelmed of how proud I am. Once you guys reach Year 13, this is one of the key moments.”

SOCIAL SCIENCESOur boys attended The Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme Enterprise Day (E-Day) in Rotorua where the students were introduced to the first stages of starting their own businesses.

The first event of the YES year kicked off at Toi Ohomai’s Mokoia campus, where the fo-cus was on introducing the programme, build-ing a team and developing a real-life business idea.

Head of YES and Student Wrangler Leah MacDonell said “the ideation stage is crucial, as the student-led teams learn the process of starting a business, researching their respective industry, developing the product and launching their idea into the market.”

She said the amount of community, government and business support was amazing.

BASKETBALLOur Junior Programme got off to a booming start this year with 42 Year 9’s and 36 Year 10’s turn up to the first Basketball Academy classes of the year. With trials approaching the coaching staff discussed many possi-bilities and probabilities for the large Junior group. After much discussion we decided the best suitable action was to make a Year 9 A’s and B’s team and a Year 10 Junior A’s and B’s teams.

Junior TrialsOn Tuesday 14th of February we had our Junior trials. First up were the Year 9’s. More than 30 raw talented athletes showed up to trial. These numbers indicated that our Junior Program is more likely to expand furthermore as it draws more attention to our community. We can only look forward to an exciting year in develop-ing and uplifting the skill of our Year 9 athletes.

Our Year 10 trials begun shortly after the Year 9’s. Our Year 10 athletes produced an entertaining and exciting trial in front of the coaching staff. Big ups goes to the athletes for their development throughout the Year 9 Academy last year. A lot of talent was exposed last year. These athlete came back this year fundamentally stronger due to the 3x3 program that happened over the holidays and all the work and effort put into their own development through last year’s Academy classes. I see great potential in furthering these athletes mental and physical skills on and off the basketball court. This group has set a very high standard for future Year 10 groups. The future of our Basketball program looks very bright. I look forward to helping all athletes reach their full potential this year.

FXV TrainingOn Friday 10th of February we were very fortunate to have Force X Velocity (FXV) come in and test our athletes using specialised equipment. Force X Velocity are a specialised group who are recognized nationwide for providing test that exposes an athlete’s strengths and weaknesses. They accomplish this by using a standardized measurement system to suit the athletes needs. For this, we asked for a basketball specialized program. This group operates with several professional programs including Basketball New Zealand and the New Zealand Breakers.

I thank the 34 Junior and Senior athletes who attended the testing on late notice.

CompetitionsWe have the final two legs of the BK 3x3 Tour. Our next stop is in Hamilton on the 18th of March with Central Auckland being the final location the following weekend. We urge all athletes to reg-ister a team through 3x3planet.com with two or three other athletes. I congratulate And1 Street-ballers (Jared Hamilton, Aidan Tonge, Keden Wichman, Jacob Isaac) who have already won 3 legs (West Auckland, Rotorua and Tauranga/Mount) in the U15 division. This is great preparation for our athletes that will be competing at the BBNZ 3x3 Nationals later that month and early April. Also Big ups to our 8, 3x3 teams that also represented in these BK 3X3 Tournaments most of these teams made Semi and Finals in there age groups... GREAT JOB.

The Athletics Championships were held on Febru-ary 22nd on a scorching hot summers day.

We had a high number of boys participate this year and though no records were broken, the standard was pretty high. With tougher qualifying marks in the field events, it meant the best of the best were left to contest the top 3 spots in which house points were accumulated to eventually find the top house for the athletics component of the Inter House competition.

To the track and on the starting gun was our TIC of Athletics Mr MacDonald whose encourage-ment and advice to those running was invaluable. Mr Coleman introduced the photo finish and timers via an ipad app which worked a treat in having consistency with time and accuracy with results.Highlight of the day had to be when Damian Munroe-Ireland upset last year’s winner Isaiah Para-ha in the high jump by a mere 2cm clearing 1.74m.

Year 9 Student William Florence kept year 10 Kelvin Cunliffe honest in the long distance events however Kelvin took out the 800, 1500 and 3000m events to become the individual Junior Athletics Champion.

Several Athletes in the Intermediate age group took out wins, but based on a points formula for podium finishes it was James Baldwin who did enough by winning the 800m and 1500m, but separating himself from the others was his 2nd place in the long jump so becoming the Intermediate Athletics Champion.

In the Senior events it was a little more clear cut with last years Intermediate Champion Selesitino Ravutaumada taking out the 1, 2 and 400m on the track as well as 1st in triple jump, 1st in long jump and 2nd in shot put. Selesitino was also in the Drake House Senior relay team where they too got 1st Place.

Inter House relays were dominated by Drake House and as a result their overall points lead was extended to make the final placings as follows: 2017 Inter House Champions Drake House 730 Points2nd Place Raleigh House 500 Points3rd Place Nelson House 490 Points4th Place Frobisher House 380 Points

Athletics STUDENT PICK UP AND DROP OFF POINTSAs a result of congestion in the school driveway both before and after school, parents are urged not to park in the front entrance of the school, but rather to drive into the public carpark on the left where there is sufficient room for picking up and dropping off students. All parents are then requested to exit left through the main gates onto Pukuatua Street and head to Old Taupo Road.

Parents are also requested to avoid driving through the school during the school day.• All students with vehicles must use the Pererika Street entrance and park in the Student Carpark• Cyclists are asked to enter and exit through the Pererika Street gate and stay within the cycle lane.

Parents are therefore asked not to use the Pererika Street gate for dropping off or picking up students, as we wish to retain our Pererika Street entrance at peak periods for cyclists and student vehicles.

STUDENT VEHICLE PASSESAny students bringing motor vehicles or motor cycles to School are required to have permission from both home and school before this happens. All requests in writing should go to Mr Whata – Deputy Principal in the first instance.

STUDENT BIKE COMPOUNDThe School provides a secure bike compound for student use which is situated in the staff carpark. This facility is provided in an all care, but no responsibility way for the benefit of our students. It is our experience that bikes placed in the locked compound with their own locking system are safe.

Thus all students using the bike compound are urged to bring their own locking device.

BUS SERVICESSchool bus or city bus services operate the various routes that enable students from Rotorua suburbs and surrounding areas to attend this school. Anyone requiring further information regarding buses should contact Mr Whata – Deputy Principal at Rotorua Boys’ High School.

CELL PHONES-CODE OF PRACTICE

Students are permitted to bring cell/mobile phones to school, but their usage is not to interfere with the educational operation of the school. The school does NOT accept responsibility for their security against loss or damage. If damage or theft should occur, the owner will need to deal with the Police. Unless directed otherwise, cell/mobile phones MUST BE SWITCHED OFF;

• In class• In house group• In assembly• In examinations/assessment activities• When asked to by a staff member

No call/text is to be made which contravenes the laws of New Zealand. Staff have the authority to confiscate the cell/mobile phone if a student breaks the code of practice. The cell/mobile phone can be collected on Friday from Mr Roe at 3.00pm. Repeat infringements may mean that parents/caregivers are required to collect the phone from school.

PERIOD TIMESAs in the previous year, students in Years 11-13 will study 5 subjects. This is in order to better equip our students for the NCEA environment. Achievement data tells us that students need to consolidate their achievements so that they achieve in more depth across fewer subjects.

All periods are 60 minutes long. There are 5 periods a day:

PUNCTUALITY AND ATTENDANCE

The school day commences at 8.45am and a roll is taken at this time. Your son therefore needs to be at school by 8.40am when a bell will be rung, indicating to all students that they should move to the appropriate classroom. Good punctuality and attendance are key elements in the learning pro-cess. Students who have not been marked present at House Group and/or Period 1 will be notified via text message.

The School Office needs to be informed when your son is absent from school. The School also offers a 24 hour, 7 day-a-week phone number to ring and leave information about your son’s absences. You should record the details of your son’s current or future absence. This phone facility removes the need for notes to school, and is available at any time for your convenience.

Lunchtime runs from 1.25-2.00pm and students must remain at school during this period. For those who do not bring their lunch to school, the canteen is available for purchasing food. Parents are asked to support the school and ensure that your son does not leave the grounds without permission at any time during the school day.

Parents who need to bring lunches or other materials to school for their sons are asked to deliver them to the School Office. Office staff will ensure your son gets the item in question.

The school day ends at 3.00pm.

HARWOOD LIBRARYHours 8am – 4.30pmOur library is a multipurpose facility with access to Wi-Fi, digital me-dia and a comprehensive bookcollection, designed to inspire a passion for reading and learning.

The library catalogue program Access-It is available both from within the school and outside forstudents to search titles and information. The Rotorua Boys’ High School website provides thelibrary link. www.rbhs.school.nz

The library provides a gateway to information within our school.

TEXTBOOKSPLEASE RETURN ANY TEXTBOOKS FROM HOME!!!

All subject departments are keen to have any textbooks that may be at home returned to the school as soon as possible. Textbooks are extremely expensive and the return of textbooks would be most appreciated.

All School textbooks are well labelled, and parents are asked to check their son’s rooms, book shelves, etc… for any textbooks belonging to the School. The earliest return of these textbooks would be warmly welcomed.

Heads of House for 2017:

Drake Mr K MacDonald Frobisher Mr K Webster Nelson Mr H Lockwood Raleigh Mr L Coleman

HOUSE GROUPS

Groupings are based on Houses and House Groups. On enrolling at the school each boy is placed in a House Group of about 24-28 pupils of different academic and social backgrounds. Each House Group has boys from all forms and is under the care and supervision of a House Group teacher with whom it will be associated with as long as both are at the school. Time is set aside each day (see the ‘School Day’) for implementing planned House organisation and administrative matters such as attendance, issuing instructions and checking uniforms.

The Groups form units of a corporate House - Drake, Frobisher, Nelson and Raleigh. Each of the Houses is made up of ten groups giving us a total of forty horizontal Groups or divisions. Each House is under the charge of a Head of House. The functions of the House Group system include providing small 'family' units throughout the school, reference points where individual traits can be recognised and developed, where pupils can feel secure. Administration, sports and cultural organisation and activities, duties and social activities are based on the House Group. Parents will have the opportunity to indicate a preference, at the time of enrolling, for a particular House or Group, where there may be an existing affiliation of a brother or parent.
