Slide 4It’s important to look after ourselves and our wellbeing and we often see lots of campaigns encouraging us to do this. Some encourage us to make sensible food choices, quit bad habits, exercise or even reach out for help. These campaigns are designed with our physical and mental wellbeing in mind and offer support in making us healthier and happier people.

Slide 5But what is a digital wellbeing and how is it different from your physical or mental wellbeing?

• Talk to the person next to you for 30 seconds and share as a group.

Slide 6Digital wellbeing is all about looking after yourself and others online, recognising how the internet can impact on us and knowing what to do if something goes wrong. The online world is such a huge part of our lives today, it’s very important that we understand how to use it safely, sensibly and with an awareness of how it can impact on us.

Slide 11But is being online actually causing us harm? Should we believe the headlines about the impact of the internet and technology on young people? Here are 5 real news headlines commenting on the impact of being online on young people today;- Have smartphones destroyed a generation?- Smartphones are making today’s teens unhappy- British teenagers among world’s most extreme internet users, report says- Social media is harming the mental health of teenagers- Social media-obsessed teenagers are so frightened of real life some won’t even answer the door

What do you think? Do you agree with any of these?

Slide 10We can share respect online by…- Always asking before you share a picture of someone else - Being respectful even if you disagree with someone online- Listening to other people’s views - Being aware of how jokes can come across – not everyone will know you are joking and it might offend or cause distress

Can you think of any other ideas?

Slide 12Let’s look closely at the headline ‘Social media is harming the mental health of teenagers.’ What do you think?- A – I completely agree, it’s a real problem we should address.- B – What’s the big deal, social media is just a bit of fun!- C – There are lots of things affecting teenagers, not just social media.- D – Something else…• Talk to the person next to you for 30 seconds and decide whether you would pick A, B or C or have another opinion on the headline. Share as a group by asking the young people to raise their hands for the letter they have chosen. Ask for volunteers to explain their answer

Slide 13Let’s now look closely at the headline ‘Social media-obsessed teenagers are so frightened of real life some won’t even answer the door.’ What do you think?

- A – This is very true, and quite worrying!

- B – No one is scared of real life because of social media!

- C – This probably has some truth in it but what’s the big deal?

- D – Something else…

• Talk to the person next to you for 30 seconds and decide whether you would pick A, B or C or have another opinion on the headline.

Share as a group by asking the young people to raise their hands for the letter they have chosen. Ask for volunteers to explain their answer.

‘Create, Connect and Share Respect: A better internet starts with you.’

Slide 14All of these headlines have focused on how the internet and technology are having a negative impact on young people today. Social media is often seen as the worst culprit for this, but is social media the enemy, or the answer, when it comes to creating a positive digital wellbeing for all?

• Talk to the person next to you for 30 seconds.

Share as a group by asking the young people to raise their hands and vote for whether social media is the enemy or the answer. Ask for volunteers to explain their answer.

Slide 15In many ways social media can be the answer because it allows us to;

- Spread positivity and kindness

- Reach out to people anytime or anywhere

- Express ourselves and share our individualities

- Find inspiration and ideas

- Share knowledge, opinions and stories with a huge global audience

Target audience: 11-14 year olds

Slide 16In some ways though it can be the enemy as we may see things which we don’t like - but there are things that you can do;

- Block people who are deliberately being unkind

- Report content which worries or offends you

- Reach out to people who might be feeling sad or worried

- Talk to someone you trust and ask for help

‘Create, Connect and Share Respect: A better internet starts with you.’

Slide 17Your wellbeing is important. Whether it’s considering your physical, emotional or digital wellbeing, there are things you can do!

- Take care of yourself online and pay attention to how things online might be making you feel

- Ask for help if you need it, either from a friend, family member or teacher. You could even call Childline on 0800 11 11 or visit the Young Minds website (youngminds.org.uk)

- Support others and look out for each other online. You could do this by reporting unkind comments or just sending someone a message to show them you’re there if they need you

- Be kind and respectful – think about the impact of what you share online and how comments, pictures and posts can makes others feel

- Take a break when you need one and remember not to neglect other aspects of your life; such as hobbies, time with your family and friends, or even school work!

- Try to maintain a healthy balance with the amount of time you spend online

Slide 18Take part this Safer Internet Day! Together we can make a difference to how the internet is used and how it makes others feel. A better internet starts with you!
