About Safer Internet Day

Introduction from the Directors of the UK Safer Internet Centre

Safer Internet Day 2018 reached millions of people across the UK, with 45% of UK children aged 8-17 and 30% of UK parents hearing about the day. Safer Internet Day 2018 was bigger than ever before, and we couldn’t have achieved the results we did if it weren’t for all of the people who made it so great.

Youth involvement played a integral part in this Safer Internet Day, with over 100 young people taking part in our national events across the UK, and even more getting involved in their own schools and communities.

Over 1,700 organisations across the UK did some amazing things to celebrate Safer Internet Day 2018. It was great to see all of their actions come together to promote the day and its messages through events, workshops, social media, quizzes and more. This involvement led to #SID2018 hashtag trending on Twitter all day in the UK.

This year for Safer Internet Day we looked at Digital Friendships, and the role that technology plays in young people’s relationships. Our research on the day looked at the role technology plays in the lives of young people, and the positive and negative part it can play in their friendships.

This report shows how Safer Internet Day created a unique opportunity for many young people to have conversations with their friends, parents, carers, and teachers, to take action and help create a better internet.

We look forward to building on this year’s success as we look ahead to Safer Internet Day 2019. Thank you to everyone who helped Safer Internet Day grow and reach so many people across the country!

Aims of Safer Internet Day 2018 - Create, Connect and Share Respect

Each year for Safer Internet Day, the UK Safer Internet Centre explores an emerging trend or theme to provide an insight into how young people navigate the online world. For Safer Internet Day 2018 we explored the role that technology plays in young people’s relationships.

Through our youth events, survey and conversations with young people, we found that technology is a central part of young people’s relationships. It is changing the way young people are interacting with each other, as well as their ideas of what constitutes a ‘good friendship’.

Digital Friendships: A report into the role of technology in young people’s relationships. On Safer Internet Day we launched the results of a survey of 2,000 young people. The majority of 8-17 year olds surveyed (83%) said they have experienced people being kind to them online in the last year. Technology is playing a large role in young peoples relationships, with 54% saying they would feel isolated if they couldn’t talk to their friends via technology, and young people saying they would need 73 days in a Snapchat streak to show that they are a good friend.

The research also found that young people are proactively helping to build a better internet and that they want support from adults to do so, with 77% of 8-17s saying they wanted their parents or carers to help them if something worries them online.

What teachers said...

It brought internet safety out of the computing lessons to a whole school and life issue. It is important that children realise they can make a difference when it comes to online safety.

Children continued their discussions of their own online experiences during playtimes and in class time, as well as talking to their parents/carers about it. (...) the resources were great and it is good to have a whole-school focus for the day.

The day itself has given a drive to continually improve online safety within the school, to shore up the foundations that have been set up and build upon them by creating a Digital Citizen group.

The safe internet day was a huge impact. The students were included in the activities so passionately.

Safer Internet Day helps to focus our teaching around staying safe and happy online.
