MOTHER’S DAY STALL Thank you to the school Parent Club for organising the Mother’s Day Stall. Students had a lovely time selecting a gift to buy for their mum to give them on Sunday. Any students who forgot their money or would like to buy something extra will be able to visit the Mother’s Day Stall again tomorrow. Wishing all mums, grandmas, aunties and special people a relaxing and peaceful Mother’s Day on Sunday. Enjoy your special day and have a wonderful time with your children and families.

CANTEEN Thank you to the many families who use the Qkr! app to place lunch orders for their children. Please remember that if you place an online order, you DO

NOT need to also fill out the lunch order on a paper bag. Lunches can still be ordered at school by filling out a paper bag, including money and placing the order in the class lunch tub for those families who choose not to use the Qkr! app.

SCHOOL DENTIST Please return your completed school dentist forms by Thursday 16th May if you would like your child to be able to have a free dental check up at school.

SCHOOL BANKING Encourage your child to become a good saver by making regular deposits into their bank account. If your child doesn’t already participate in school banking, consider opening a Commonwealth Bank account for them so they can develop good saving habits. School banking day is Tuesday.

SEPTEMBER TO MAY IS NO HAT, NO OUTSIDE PLAY Although the weather has been cool and wet lately, the UV levels can still be high, so students still need to wear their broad brimmed school hats while outside. Hats are available from the office for $10.

READING CLUB Reading Club re-commenced yesterday for enrolled students. Unfortunately there are no vacancies remaining for Wednesday afternoon Reading Club, however we still encourage you to read at home with your child to assist them to develop their

reading skills. The local library is also a great place to visit, giving you the opportunity to borrow books, magazines & DVDs as well as access the internet and participate in great literacy activities..

Playgroup

We have been fortunate this term to be working with several university

students who are on placement. It is a great opportunity to visit playgroup,

especially as the weather gets cooler, and we can all benefit from the

extra helpers and additional attention available to our playgroup children.

Playgroup is free to attend and everyone is welcome.

It is on each Tuesday & Thursday, 9-11am.

Melbourne Football Club Visit The middle students enjoyed a visit from some players from the Melbourne Football Club who came to present a healthy eating and living program. The clinic outlined the importance of healthy eating, healthy sleeping and healthy living. Students had the opportunity to ask lots of great questions and the middle students will be teaching their buddy grades what they have learnt from these professional footballers.

On Wednesday 8th of May, the Coral Park Cross Country Team travelled to Sydney Pargeter Reserve in Endeavour Hills to participate in the Hampton Park District Cross Country. We had 52 athletes represent our great school and I was very proud of all of them. We had a few athletes qualify through to the divisional final which will take place on Wednesday 29th May at Casey Fields. Well done to Sulaman S11, Michael S12, Sajjad S10, Tayleah S20, Taneia M19 and Shanae M17 on making it through to the Divisional Finals. Congratulations to everyone in the Coral Park Cross Country Team for doing their best and displaying fantastic sportsmanship! Bill Hains

National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) 2019

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN), tests are to be conducted from 14th - 24th May 2019. Coral Park Primary School will be completing these tests online for the first time this year and the testing period will run over two weeks. These tests are common national tests undertaken by all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) is responsible for NAPLAN across the state.

The national testing program provides information to students, teachers, parent/carers and school communities about how students are performing against the national benchmarks for literacy and numeracy. The results provide a measure of how Australian schools and students are performing in the areas of reading, writing, spelling, language conventions and numeracy.

Specifically information gained is used for:

• individual student reports to parents

• school reporting to their communities, and

• aggregate reporting against national standards.

It is important to remember that the educational ‘value’ of all assessment (testing) is that the information obtained from the results be used to provide students and parents with feedback on areas of student progress and inform teachers as to their students’ learning needs.

It is also important to recognise that the National Assessment Program is not seen as the sole criterion for measuring student performance, but rather as a part of a broad range of measures used by teachers to in-form the learning and teaching process.

To assist in the administration of NAPLAN parents/carers are asked to keep the 14th – 24th May free from interruptions to the normal school routine. Parents/carers could also assist their children by speaking positively about the three days with the view to avoid undue student anxiety.

Teachers will ensure that students are familiar with the test formats and will provide appropriate support and guidance leading up to the test date. If you would like to provide some extra online practice for your child you can access some practice tests at the following website:

https://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site

If you have any questions about your child's preparation for NAPLAN, you are encouraged to make a time to speak with their teacher.
