The public cloud market has changed dramatically since Cloudreach
was founded in 2009. At that time, cloud technology was less mature,
and our customers were early adopters and innovators. We often heard
from large enterprise leaders that cloud was for start-ups and small
businesses, with many dismissing its ability to enable real change.
Over the past ten years, this perspective has shifted significantly.
Enterprise leaders are drawn to cloud for many reasons. The first and
most important is that cloud drives innovation, with faster processes
and scalable resources. It also helps reduce project delivery overhead,
remove sunk costs and waste associated with their traditional
on-premises operating models, and improve security. IT and business
heads now are actively exploring how they can gain the most value
from cloud technology.
Cloud Today Enterprises now use cloud to create
data visibility, enable faster innovation,
and improve business agility.
Most early adopters and innovators understood
the potential of cloud technology. They focused
on exiting data centres to reduce technical debt
and migrating applications to the cloud.

Cloud Computing Business Drivers 1
This section discusses cloud capabilities and key requirements. Our goal is to empower you with the insights you need to create business objectives and start planning. Let’s cover some of the myths and benefits associated with public cloud.
6 | Cloudreach.comAccelerate Cloud Adoption with Cloudreach and Microsoft Azure
7 | Cloudreach.comAccelerate Cloud Adoption with Cloudreach and Microsoft Azure
Myths
When you move to the cloud, you leave behind the predictable,
but often expensive, fixed costs of a CapEx cycle, where you
invest, maintain, and upgrade hardware. You find yourself in the
flexible, scalable world of an OpEx model where you can add and
subtract services or scale up and down as needed.
This move introduces its own set of challenges as you learn
to manage costs in a decentralized, consumption-based
environment. You will maximize your opportunities for reducing
costs by understanding how cloud resources are used, how to
manage OpEx cost model, and how to establish effective cloud
usage governance. Take some time upfront to develop a cloud
business case and cost model so that you reap early and sustained
cost benefits from your Azure adoption.
Many people believe that operating
in the cloud is automatically
cheaper than running a traditional
on-premises data centre. This isn’t
always the case.

PRO TIP: Understanding cloud myths
will help you avoid potential pitfalls
that could slow your Azure journey.
8 | Cloudreach.comAccelerate Cloud Adoption with Cloudreach and Microsoft Azure
Myths
Cloud transformation is commonly driven by leaders’ desire
to create a more innovative and agile business, rather than
only modernizing IT. Adopting cloud technology can serve as
a catalyst, but your success depends on aligning your people
and processes in order to achieve these goals.
PRO TIP: Culture is key to driving
innovation. Align people and
processes to new ways of working
to enable faster delivery and
increase efficiency.

Myths
As we have mentioned previously,
cloud doesn’t just transform IT:
It transforms the business.
There are many touchpoints where your IT organization interacts
with your business units, including finance, procurement,
operations, and security teams. Changes to IT can cause friction
and disruption at these intersections, especially if your IT
organization is trying to adopt a more agile mindset.
PRO TIP: Want to minimise change
management headaches? Work
with your business functions to
update their governance models
and decentralise and automate key
compliance processes.

10 | Cloudreach.comAccelerate Cloud Adoption with Cloudreach and Microsoft Azure
Myths
Cloud isn’t just about hosting your infrastructure on external
servers: It provides the building blocks to scale and optimise
your business. When you move workloads to the cloud, you
gain access to Azure’s extensive ecosystem of tools and
services. This enables you to continually enhance business
processes and operations. Many companies are using Azure
to move from legacy systems and platforms to open source
technologies and loosely coupled processes that provide
incredible business flexibility.
PRO TIP: Cloud provides insight,
speed, and flexibility you can use
to drive transformation. Use Azure
tools and platforms to improve
data visibility and control over
your business.

11 | Cloudreach.comAccelerate Cloud Adoption with Cloudreach and Microsoft Azure
Myths
A comprehensive cloud strategy will help align the rest of the
business around a common purpose you can use to drive cloud
adoption. This is an opportunity to do some soul searching as a
business and ask why you are transforming.
A cloud vision, strategy, principles, and goals will help you
identify your desired future state and new capabilities you’ll
provide the business. It will also help you rationalise your current
infrastructure: understanding what to keep on-premises, what to
move to the cloud, and what to retire. Without a strategy, you are
essentially just shifting your technology stack.
Your cloud strategy will serve as the
foundation of your Azure adoption
journey and help define your cloud
operating model.

PRO TIP: Start by creating specific
business requirements and use
cases. Align all key stakeholders in
creating your desired future state
and capabilities and use that to
drive your cloud strategy.

Myths
Secure Azure Data Centres
Azure offers multiple levels of security. From a physical
perspective, Azure is highly secure, with access approval
at the facility’s perimeter, at the building’s perimeter,
inside the building, and on the data centre. As a
consequence, Azure data centres are some of the most
secure buildings in the world.
Monitoring and Reliability
From a logical and architectural perspective, Azure
provides you with software-based tools to monitor and
protect the flow of information in and out of your cloud
resources. Azure has both physical and software-driven
security that enables you to reconstruct your environment
from the ground up, with software-driven security built
into the infrastructure.

Myths
Access Management
Azure has integrated identity and access management
capabilities, providing better control, while delivering
a superior experience with single sign-on. Azure also
enables immutable logging and monitoring for security
analytics and control key management, just to name
a few capabilities.
Deployment Automation
Azure provides deployment tools to manage and
maintain the creation and decommission of resources.
This allows you to securely automate many of your
security practices, as well as ensure your infrastructure
is trackable, traceable, and configurable. Azure helps
you streamline the implementation of your security
policies and ensure ongoing compliance.PRO TIP: Use the Microsoft Azure
service-driven approach to achieve
your security policies. It reduces
administration overhead and
empowers your IT team to spend
more time focusing on innovation.
14 | Cloudreach.comAccelerate Cloud Adoption with Cloudreach and Microsoft Azure
Myths
It is true that cloud allows elastic computing infrastructure, which
can grow and shrink to fit traffic patterns in near real-time. It is
also true that Azure ensures unprecedented high availability and
reliability of your data. What is less known is that for Infrastructure
as a Service (IaaS), none of these benefits come out of the box.
They must be achieved via careful planning and good design.
A direct lift-and-shift migration to Azure will not necessarily make
legacy systems offer more availability than if they are on-premises.
To gain more availability, it’s important to create a plan and
configure Azure resources appropriately. Servers in Azure do not
automatically resize themselves when needed, and backups are
not automatically always available unless they are first configured
as part of a comprehensive cloud strategy that takes into account
availability, reliability, and cost.
7# Cloud provides limitless scale and unprecedentedreliability
PRO TIP: Get better reliability,
availability, and scale with Azure,
by using modern cloud management
tools and tapping into the ecosystem
of value-added Azure services.

Benefits
If properly managed, Azure cloud adoption can serve as a
catalyst for your wider digital transformation and provides an
opportunity for you to:
Increase efficiency
Adopting Azure provides an excellent
opportunity to increase operational efficiency—
especially in the areas of technology and costs.
Azure enables you to address technical debt, including high costs
and lagging capabilities. If your cloud adoption goals include
improving efficiency and optimising performance, you can refactor
and modernize your existing applications, enhancing the value
they provide your business. With the right governance and cost
management procedures in place, you also have the opportunity
to be more cost-efficient.
Enable scalable growth
Azure is designed to be responsive to you and
your customers’ needs. You can tailor services
as required to ensure optimum application
performance and efficiency. Azure services also offer high reliability,
irrespective of scale. You can add more services to extend your
offering and use Azure capabilities to offer analytics as a service or
digital-physical products.
In traditional on-premises environments it can take weeks to scale
up a system. With Azure, vertical scaling adjustments can be made
in minutes. In many cases, you can even benefit from elastic services
which will shrink or grow, automatically responding to sudden spikes
in demand for certain workloads. This is a boon for seasonal or other
businesses, as it allows them to avoid over-provisioning services for
episodic use.

Benefits
Improve business agility
Businesses want to quickly respond to
changing market conditions and stay
ahead of their competitors. The ability
to innovate quickly and at scale is a benefit that all will want to
access during their cloud journey.
But what does agility look like? From an IT perspective, it involves
moving away from traditional cultures focused on consistency,
maintaining operational integrity at all costs, and long, drawn
out release cycles. Many organizations will want to embrace a
DevOps model, empowering their development teams to make
key decisions, allowing them to develop, launch, and scale or retire
products quickly.
Increase customer focus and innovation
Moving to the cloud allows you to
experiment with new ways to generate
value from your data and differentiate from your competitors.
Your solution provider can provide you with an Azure toolkit that you
can immediately use to stand up Innovation as a Service. Empower
your teams to experiment and develop new products and services
in hours instead of months. Use your Azure environment to test new
products with customers and receive feedback you can use to refine
offerings and take them to market fast.

As you gain cloud maturity, your strategy will adapt and evolve.
However, it will remain your north star for all stakeholders, helping
you keep your transformation on course.
Most organizations develop a three-year or longer cloud strategy to
achieve a strategic objective, such as going digital-first to create more
ability or enabling a better customer experience to drive revenues. Having
clarity around a shared vision will serve as a forcing function for making
decisions about your cloud journey and technology stack.
Typical questions stakeholders consider are:
• Where is the market headed?
• How are customer expectations changing?
• How are our competitors using cloud?
• What issues are you experiencing with your current infrastructure?
• What do you want to achieve? How will cloud help you achieve this?
• What is our desired future state and technology architecture?

Many organizations are “going agile,” flattening hierarchies, empowering
teams to make decisions, and removing obstacles that slow progress.
If your objectives are to enable innovation, increase efficiency, and accelerate delivery,
then your IT organization will need to be empowered to make quick, responsive
decisions and embrace experimentation. Many companies embrace agile and DevOps,
creating small teams that build new processes iteratively and test them. Releasing
new capabilities faster and in smaller increments can reduce risk while improving the
customer experience.
Once you gain experience with agile, consider deploying it across the company.
Cross-functional teams can work together to analyse business processes and their
impacts and break down new solutions into bite-sized functionality. The more agilely
you work, the greater your responsiveness to customer needs and market trends.

Establishing proper cloud governance yields tangible benefits. It empowers your
team to innovate within limits, reducing business and technology risk.
Here’s how to begin defining your cloud governance model:
• Perform a risk and capability assessment to understand any governance gaps.
• Build a compliance plan that focuses on leveraging your cloud platform to ensure
effective policies, standards, and controls are in place.
The cloud enables the optimisation and automation of governance within an
organization, which help accelerate your response to risk and market changes.
However, the right processes must be in place to establish this governance in the
cloud. Many businesses approach the management of their governance model by
developing a cloud centre of excellence (CCoE). This central unit of ‘pioneers’ or
‘evangelists’ are responsible for incubating controls and best practices related to
cloud architecture and governance. Their focus is on accelerating cloud use while
minimising costs and risk.

As with governance, your security model will need to adapt to the cloud.
While traditional, perimeter-focused security models are slow to scale and adapt,
cloud security needs to address a scalable, ever-changing environment. By doing so,
cloud can enable speed and innovation without compromising security.
The path forward includes assessing your existing security policies and mapping their
interactions to processes and workflows in the cloud. This will help you decide how
those policies will adapt, which security controls you need, and which tools/vendors
you want to work with. You can:
• Use the tooling services available from Azure to integrate security into your build
and deploy process.
• Add automated security testing and gates to continuously check your applications
and protect your systems.
• Use logging and monitoring capabilities to gain an overview of your platform and
help manage it proactively.
By building a software-driven security system, you can create a repeatable, revisable
IT landscape that can be adapted, updated, and scaled to respond to new business
challenges and security threats.

Moving to the cloud requires a new set of skills, which can be acquired by
upskilling existing employees or hiring new talent.
It is important to create a framework for upskilling, onboarding, and recruitment,
which can scale cloud education and enablement within the business. Here’s how:
• Create a cloud vision, strategy, and principles that your cloud team will follow.
• Define core cloud competencies and domains that will help you drive value within
your business.
• Use these cloud competencies to assess current gaps in skills and roles within your
business, which you can then factor into your upskilling and recruitment process.
You can then set up a cloud education program to create “cloud champions,” who can
help drive further adoption and keep commitment high. The goal here is to enable
cloud-fluency across the organization (from executives to enterprise architects
to operations) and create a culture of continuous learning. That way, your people
are empowered to take advantage of the cloud in their everyday activities and
continuously add value to your business.
Microsoft provides a wealth of online Azure courses and certifications your team can
use to attain mastery of new systems and processes. Motivate your team to adopt a
spirit of continuous learning, bringing new skills and capabilities to your organization.

A key part of planning the cloud journey is to assess existing applications.
Modernization
This will allow you to identify which modernization and implementation strategy to
use, commonly referred to as the 6Rs:
These decisions should be driven
by your business objectives.
Rehosting is a quick and cost-effective migration solution which is practical if you
desire minimal impact on existing workflows. This approach will marginally save on
costs. However, it does little to accelerate you towards the benefits of cloud adoption.
Replatforming an application or service when the on-premises hardware or software
reaches end-of-life offers the opportunity to avoid CapEx investment and increase
scalability. For example, many database services are now replatformed.
Refactoring moves virtual machines to Platform as a Service (PaaS) services to achieve
further improvements with costs, reliability, and scalability. Another model of refactoring
is to adopt the 12-factor application methodology when redesigning the applications.
If your goal is to scale your existing applications, boost agility, exploit cloud capabilities,
and realize greater value you will need to invest in transforming your apps via Azure
PaaS capabilities. This will allow you to easily integrate and deploy your applications,
potentially with the latest analytics, AI, and ML tools to enhance the value of your assets.

Operating in the cloud is different
from operating in the data centre.
This diagram highlights some of the
fundamental principles of a cloud
operations team:
Operations and Service Management
Deploying and managing cloud platforms requires multi-skilled
personnel, who are well-versed in using cloud-native tools.
They benefit from software-driven, automated processes
that allow for instant scale and controls which create efficient
guardrails and manage cloud costs. The cloud team also needs
to support regular feature releases and adopt a philosophy of
continuous improvement.
To deliver in line with these principles, your organization
will benefit from an actionable roadmap for your cloud
transformation that is focussed on operational readiness.
It is useful to segment your tools, skills, and processes
into different operational domains. This process helps you
isolate how you plan and develop the evolution of your cloud
operations capabilities and support your customers.

Azure provides integrated services, such as IoT, AI, and ML, and more,
that can drive your business forward.
Using Next-Generation Technology
Many companies are pairing their cloud strategy with a plan to create master data:
a single version of data truth that is accessible to all cloud services. While this takes
work, master data can be used to gain powerful insights into customer needs,
business operations, and market demands.
You can use Azure as a modern data platform with serverless data analytics, AI, and ML
that help you move from sensing and responding trends to predicting them. Industry
companies are using predictive analytics to remove the cost and waste from business
operations, get closer to customers, and innovate products.
In addition, Azure provides integrated services you can use to develop new capabilities
that enable greater precision and control. While companies are in the early days of
using IoT, AI, and ML, these tools will enable greater orchestration of processes across
businesses, networks, and partners, bringing greater control to modern business.
