I was very moved and humbled this Thursday to stand with all students during our 2 minutes silence as students stood respectfully around the balcony. They demonstrated extreme respect for the fallen and those who gave up their lives for our freedoms. Very proud of my students. A thank you also to Matthew W. who for the second year running provided senior leaders with bespoke creative poppies that he has made especially for us. There are so many examples of where our students show kindness, respect and thought for others. I was proud also when I listened to Callum B in Year 11 read out his superb high level analysis of a text in English today. Yes, students are impressive for their behaviours, maturity and learning ambition. We celebrate the achievements of every student and actively seek to acknowledge all personal achievements both inside and outside school. I have just returned from the Remembrance Service for Y7 in St Stephen’s Church and was extremely moved to see so many family and friends attend and join in with our singing, music and drama remembering aspects of service by the heroes of yesterday. But, we are the heroes of today and all of our kind and brave actions however small add to our world so that it can be one of kindness, love and respect. I really enjoy hearing about those small acts of kindness as much as those larger ones. I have on my desk right now an inspiring story called ‘Manners Cost Nothing’ written by a budding authoress Matilda D whose creative writing supports our values of RESPECT. Please encourage your child to speak to me, to share their success outside the Academy. Can you speak to your children about their use of mobile phones as we have noticed that they are leaving glued to their screens at the end of the day. Anti-bullying week is next week where the curriculum is enriched by student and staff led activities to encourage a kind and supportive community where everyone is equally valued and respected. Our students involved in the ‘delete the hate campaign’ about on-line bullying and harassment have created fabulous resources and work being displayed in the reception area. It takes us all to stand together, to walk away from bullies and say no. Please do continue to contact us if you have concerns around behaviour out of school. We stand together in wanting our children to be treated fairly and for any issues to be resolved appropriately. I give you my word that the Academy will do all it can to say no along with our student campaigners. I would like to mention the aspirational pathways some of our past students have reached since leaving Bexhill Academy. This is a school where dreams and aspirations happen. Our young people can and do excel in the wider community and achieve great results. But, I assure you that every child, regardless of what they chose to do is celebrated and valued whether they select employment, apprenticeship or future study for their future after Y11.

Our aim is to release talent, confidence and aspiration so that every child in our care has choice to follow their dreams. Thank you sincerely for all your support and walking beside us as we support your child. Have a relaxing and safe weekend.

‘I really enjoyed this book as I feel like I really connected with it. It was full of lots of different emotions, Love, hate, anger and I really felt what the characters were feeling. It was full of plot twists and mysteries that were solved and mysteries that still need to be solved. On the other hand, this also has to be the saddest book I have ever read. There were lots of death, betrayal and broken relationships, which really made it, amazing, but sad at the same time. Beautiful story.’

Safeguarding Update

We're coming towards the party season now, and many young people will be heading out to celebrations, often in the homes of friends' or acquaintances. Although many of these parties will end with nothing worse than a very tired young person, other events may lead to greater problems, including sexual exploitation, drug use or other risky behaviours. West Yorkshire Police has information for young people about the potential dangers of house parties on its website, and how to keep themselves safer. Please visit this website with your child before they head out so they can be aware of the possible risks and how to keep themselves safe https://www.westyorkshire.police.uk/party This and other resources are available on our academy website under the Safeguarding at Bexhill Academy area. Please do let the team know if there are any resources not here that you would find helpful

Careers

It has been yet another busy week with careers. I had the pleasure of being invited to the SLT Meeting on Monday to talk about Term 1 and plans for the future. The new Careers Programme has the full support of Catherine Davies, our Executive Principal, so I am really thrilled so be able to share this with you as parents/carers, our students, staff and employers. It is a working document so will continue to be updated throughout the academic year. Please do have a look on our careers page (under About) on the Academy website. Mr Page and I visited Factory Internet on Thursday – please see the newsletter for further information. I am also pleased to announce the launch of an on-line careers platform, Morrisby. Students can sign up by using the Academy specific code – full details on page one of the newsletter. https://www.bexhillacademy.org/media/documents/Careers%20Newsletter%20Term%202%20-%2012%20November%202021.pdf Just a reminder that Year 9 & 10 students will be at their third and final Futuready on Tuesday and Wednesday next week – please meet in the Heart Space at 8.30am. Tracey J Holden Careers Adviser 01424 735475 [email protected] Duke of Edinburgh Award We are pleased to welcome our new participants for the Bronze Award 2021-22. An overwhelming response so far with 31, Year 9 students, registered for the award in the last week. Please remember that we do require both the DofE payment and enrolment form to register your child, and for them to check their school email for the ‘Welcome Email’ from DofE. They must respond to this welcome message to generate their log in details and to receive their welcome pack. Well done to Aimee G who is already making progress on her physical and skills section and Callum S who has decided on his activities in all three sections, all within the first week!

Mr Walton Can I give a special mention to all of Year 7 who have sat their CATs this week. Their attitude to the assessments, behaviour and perseverance should all be commended. Miss Bovenzi – English Erin McC – 7x5/En Erin approached lessons with a positive learning attitude, listens carefully and put full effort into tasks. Lately, I have been very impressed with her classroom contributions and her imaginative insights and consideration of the underlying themes of ‘Lord of the Flies’. Keep up the great work, Erin! Mrs Watts – Art This week’s Art superstar learners are the whole class 7Y5, I have the great pleasure of teaching this group period one on a Thursday morning, their work ethic and enthusiasm is infectious. Our last lesson task was an Observational drawing with a twist. Each student was asked to complete an enlarged, scaled up study of their shell, to fill the whole first page of their art sketchbook. The twist was to use water colouring pencils (I did not explain how to use them) until after they had applied the colour through mark making techniques, as if they were normal colouring pencils. I was hoping for some good studies, I was blown away by their BRILLIANCE, this is the whole classes work – no one was absent and all completed truly amazing and perceptive enlarged observational studies. Well done to all in 7Y5 you are all just BRILLIANT! Mary Watts Director of ARTS
