Music Studies Should Begin at an Early Age

by Ed Berlett Beginning music study at an early age has some ad-vantages that are difficult to duplicate when studies are started at later ages. The book “Talent is Overrated” has some insight into the value of beginning music study at an early age.

“Brain adaptations seem to follow a similar pattern…. Practice in childhood causes myelin to build up more than does practice in adulthood. A study of professional pianists found that the more practice they did before age sixteen, the more myelin they had in the critical parts of their brains. Starting early holds advantages that become less available later in life.”

Children have incredible energy! They run, climb, jump, build, color and create. A music/keyboard class is an excellent way to begin preschool music study. A class can take advantage of this natural curiosity and desire to be creative. Private instruction is also possi-

ble for young beginners but it tends to be a little more intimidating, and requires a longer attention span. Early introduction to music lays the foundation for success in other areas. Understanding the music “language” will enhance children’s appreciation and teach them how to express themselves through music. The importance of music study has been something that educators have known for thousands of years. To quote Aristotle, “Music has the power of producing a certain effect on the moral character of the soul, and if it has the power to do this, it is clear that the young must be directed to music and must be educated in it.”

So if you have started lessons you are on the right track.

If aren’t taking lessons, get started.

Lutherville Music for Little Mozarts Keyboard Class (ages 4-6)

Artist Music is pleased to announce that we are starting a keyboard centered music class to introduce young beginners to music. The cur-riculum uses the “Music for Little Mozarts” books. You can get more information about the curriculum at www.musicforlittlemozarts.com. There are many links to good articles about this well thought out course of study and the benefits of music study for young beginners. There is also an exciting technology component for those that own an iPad. “Music for Little Mozarts” books are included in the “Piano Maestro” app. The classes will be taught be Ed Berlett at the TrinityLife location in Lutherville. The first class is Saturday, February 18th, at 12:30. Each class is 45 to 60 minutes long and will continue for 10 weeks. The classes are open to children from ages 4 to 6, and children must have a four-octave keyboard with full size keys or a piano at home for daily practice. If you are interested in finding out more, please call 410-833-1895. Parent/child participation is an integral part of the program. The parent attends classes with the child, serving as a “learning partner”, both in class and at home. This strong bond creates a stimulating environment of love and sharing through music. Parent and child will be introduced to the following skills: • Keyboard Geography – learn to navigate the piano keyboard. • Keyboard Study - develops hand-eye coordination. • Ear Training - develops aural awareness and sensitivity to sound

and pitch.

• Creative Movement - develops coordination and rhythm aware-ness.

• Singing - encourages expression through song. • Musical Notation - strengthens focus and concentration through

reading skills.

• Creative Ensembles - stimulating group activities that concentrate

on emerging skills.

Upcoming Classes and Opportunities

Since 1978, more than 2 million families have enjoyed singing and

dancing in Kindermusik classes in over 70 countries worldwide—and

now they can join the fun at Artist Music of Perry Hall/White Marsh

too! At Kindermusik with Miss Debbie, we delight each week in sing-

ing, dancing, playing instru-

ments, and exploring creative

movement. We also have story

times and other activities to

help children and their families

discover ways that music can

enrich their lives and lay the

foundation for a life of learning.

Research from the top experts shows that music does more for children

than bring them joy; it also helps their brain make the connections need-

ed for virtually every kind of intelligence. The Kindermusik curriculum,

built upon this research, has been proven to stimulate every area of a

child’s development: intellectual, verbal, physical, artistic, and social-

emotional.

Ninety-nine percent of Kindermusik parents say they would heartily

recommend our program: Come take a free class and join in the fun!

Reisterstown Guitar, Piano, and Violin Group Classes (ages 6-10)

Artist Music Center of Reisterstown is pleased to announce our Febru-

ary group classes for beginners. Group classes on the following instru-

ments will take place on the following days:

Guitar: Wednesdays (afternoon/early evening)

Piano: Thursdays (afternoon/early evening)

Violin: Wednesdays (afternoon/early evening)

Piano classes will take place on full size acoustic and/or digital pianos

(each student will be seated at their own instrument). Students are re-

quired to have their own instruments for guitar and violin classes (Artist

Music has instruments available for rent and for purchase)

Group classes are a great way for those new to an instrument to be in-

troduced to fundamentals. The tuition for the group lessons is $90,

just $15 per lesson, and the courses will run from March 1st

through April 6th, 2017.

Artist Music sponsors a number of scholarships each year for students

recommended by unaffiliated judges at our summer scholarship audi-

tions. Students studying any instrument can participate, and the winners

receive the following:

1st Place: 50% tuition remission from Sep 1 through Aug. 31

2nd Place: 25% tuition remission from Sep 1 through Aug. 31

3rd Place: 10% tuition remission from Sep 1 through Aug. 31

The hired judges are asked to evaluate based on preparation and on

overall impression of the student. In judging the overall impression, we

ask that judges not consider how advanced the student is, so students at

any level of instruction are welcome to apply!

In addition to the opportunity to compete, this is an opportunity for a

student to be evaluated by an outside judge. Each student receives an

adjudication sheet with comments and a score.
