In the Rio Grande do Sui state, sea shrimp farming activity is in expansion ever sinceexotic shrimp Litopenaeus vanname! was introduced. Today, four farms are produc . e the state, and are installed in the municipal districts of Sao Jose do Norte and Rio Gra sanother four farms already possess previous license for work. Along with the ac' . '5potential productive growth comes an increase of environmental and socioeconomic imrisks, which can directly affect sustainability of the activity. Several examples confirm, ; ~ statement, with similar problems reported for countries that saw the exponential growtheir activity, but with consequent productive, legal and environmental problems. There'IOI1a manner of proViding long-lasting development of the activity is through planning adecision management of enterprise development at coastal areas, by emplo' "Geographical Information Systems (SIG). The present study proposed the identificatiocharacterization of areas destined to sea shrimp farming in RS, supported by 0 -(ETM+/Landsat, Google Earth), airborne (35 mm/ADAR 1000 system), terrestrial (RIC 500SE) and field expedition remote sensing techniques and methods, integrating data'Geographical Information System (in IDRISI Andes Edition - ver. 15.01). The study a =included the municipal districts of Rio Grande and Sao Jose do Norte, located in .> :Southern portion of the Patos Lagoon estuary (3100'N and 5116'W) and comprising a-area of approximately 10144 km 2 Results indicated that enterprises were built on coas-;;;fields or in areas of obliterated dunes, which are favorable for farming. The proximo possible consuming markets and local labor, relatively good access roads, availa electric network and local technical support (FURG-EMA) are also favorable to the projec;sHowever, there is concern as to changes In the original projects, causing environm impacts and noncompliance of environmental norms. An example is the occupation 0marsh areas. Based on the obtained information, instruments can be created for aidinginherent legal decisions of administration of the activity for future enterprises.Key words: Shrimp farms, Palos Lagoon, GIS, coastalmanagement1/ [email protected], 21 [email protected],3/[email protected], 4/paulotagliani@fu'JU.7
