Sundial Group and its MD Tim Chudley have picked up a pair of wins

at the Living Wage Champion Awards.

Chudley won the individual Leadership award for the East Midlands

region, while Sundial Group won the Living Wage Employer Champion

Award. He has been a vocal supporter of M&IT and ABPCO's Living

Wage for Live Events campaign since its launch in the summer.

Chudley said: “I’m very happy to receive this as a representative of the

hospitality industry, because I think the sector is one that’s been

dragging its heels about paying their frontline people as professionals

and the people that really drive the customer journey and satisfaction.

“I think it’s time that everyone in hotels and hospitality started paying

their people properly, so I’m thrilled to have been selected as a

National Living Wage Champion.”

The Living Wage Champion Awards celebrate individuals and

organisations that have made a real difference to their industry or their

community by supporting the Living Wage.

Sundial Group was the only employer from the meetings and events

sector to have been nominated in the awards.

Conference Cambridge joins leading Association for Professional

Conference Cambridge, the official free venue-finding service for Cambridge University and its Colleges, as well as hotels and other unique properties

in the city, has recently become a member of the Association of British Professional Conference Organisers (ABPCO) to promote Cambridge as a

destination for conferences.

Conference Cambridge has joined ABPCO to reach professional conference organisers who may be looking to hold events and offer them a one-stop

service for venue suitability and availability.

Membership also gives Conference Cambridge’s portfolio of venues increased exposure to this valuable group of professionals.

Kelly Vickers, Director of Conference Cambridge said: “We’ll be attending our first ABPCO meeting in December where we will be promoting our

venues and the benefits of organising association conferences in Cambridge.

“We have a great deal to offer – including the unique ‘Cambridge Experience’ and an incredible bank of knowledge on our doorstep which gives access

to world-leading speakers on a wide range of topics. We are looking forward to working closely with ABPCO over the coming months.”

ABPCO added: “We are a dedicated industry association representing professional conferences organisers. Membership is open to destinations which

clearly demonstrate the skills, knowledge and experience required to plan and organise major UK and international conferences. We welcome

Conference Cambridge and look forward to supporting them in their aim to plan, bid and host professional conferences and events in the city.”

A world-leading professor of Phonetics and Sociolinguistics has spent the last 20 years using Glasgow as her

research platform to study the changing landscape of language.

Now at the top of her field, Professor Jane Stuart Smith combined her expertise with her role in Glasgow’s award-

winning Conference Ambassador Programme to head up the city’s successful bid to secure the 18th International

Conference of Phonetic Sciences (ICPhS) 2015.

As the Chair of the Local Organising Committee Jane coordinated input from a consortium of four Scottish universities. She

worked closely with a 20-strong team to deliver a winning bid, a successful conference and a fantastic conference party in the

city’s iconic Merchant Square for more than 800 people.

The conference took place in Glasgow recently welcoming 1000 global experts with the local economy benefiting from an injection of more than £2million.

Jane said: “I was able to use my expertise from the last two decades to work with Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, the SECC and academic institutions located across

Scotland to put together a winning bid.

“It’s no secret that Glasgow has world-leading research hubs, esteemed academics and huge strengths across its key areas of strategic growth and I was delighted to work

with the team to win this large congress.

“I’m originally from the south of England but I’m proud to call my honorary city of Glasgow, home. It was in this city that I have made leaps and bounds in my research and

forged huge discoveries in the subject of accent and dialect.”

The University of Glasgow professor is one of 1700 influential individuals in Glasgow’s Conference Ambassador Programme, each working in partnership with Glasgow City

Marketing Bureau to bid and secure conference business.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the programme, the first in the UK, and has showcased its incredible success throughout the industry. Now ambassador-won

meetings account for approximately one in three confirmed conferences to the city, making a healthy financial contribution to the local economy.

Glasgow’s has an unrivalled reputation as a ‘smart city’ due to its research and academic strength; but its accessibility, vast accommodation options, affordability as well as

its vibrant culture, scenery and diverse restaurant scene, are popular amongst associations choosing a host destination. Jane added: “The Glasgow dialect is a phonetic

treasure trove, I could spend my whole career working on it – many of our delegates also loved the added bonus of being able to study and experience this first hand.”

Jane enlisted the skills and experience of PCO and ABPCO board member Celia Lloyd of Intelligent Events to aid her in the delivery of the conference.

Celia said: “We were delighted to be part of the team to win the bid for the International Conference of Phonetic Science 2015.

“Organising conferences on this scale is challenging but the clear vision that Jane provided enabled everyone to focus on the practicalities of delivering a world class

conference.

“It’s been a real pleasure to work with such a collaborative team over the past four years and showcases the importance of a strong teamwork ethic in the winning and

delivery of conferences.

“I am also honoured to be on the Executive Board of the Association of British Professional Conference Organisers (ABPCO), and to be able to contribute to the ongoing

support ABPCO provides for its members.

“I am passionate about the impact of emerging business practices and technologies and how these can improve the way we work and the conferences we deliver. I was

delighted to be involved in the facilitation of conference exchange visits to promote best practice and collaboration between members.”

In the last calendar year (January to December 2014), Glasgow conference ambassadors secured 178 conferences worth nearly £85 million to the city’s economy.

The Association of British Professional Conference Organisers (ABPCO) is holding its next AGM at the ICC Birmingham on Friday 5th February 2016 with

Dragon Boat world champion and Atlantic rower Rachel Smith as the special guest speaker.

A networking session will begin the day followed by a review of 2015, the results of the ABPCO board elections and a detailed look at the business plan for

2016 including ABPCO’s focus on hot industry topics such as the Living Wage.

BBC Midlands Today presenter Mary Rhodes will join Living Wage Foundation director Sarah Vero to discuss the campaign before Mark Riches and Sarah Wright take to

the floor to talk about the new Trailblazer apprenticeship standard in events management.

Following lunch, Rachel Smith, who broke records rowing across the Atlantic in 2008, will share her insights into challenging yourself to do the extraordinary both in business

and in personal life.

“The AGM is shaping up to be an outstanding event with interesting sessions and a superb guest speaker,” comments Nicole Leida, joint-chair of ABPCO. “2015 has been a

successful year for ABPCO and the AGM will give us the opportunity to celebrate but it’s also a chance to look towards the future. Our dedicated sessions will make for

interesting discussion amongst attendees but Rachel Smith will certainly open a few eyes when it comes to the challenges she has faced. We’re all looking forward to what

should be a fantastic day at ICC Birmingham.”

As the networking dinners have proved so popular there will also be a social dinner held at Austin Court on Thursday 4th December. Both ABPCO members and
