Olympia London is undergoing a strategic
review which is expected to lead to its sale
Olympia exhibition centre is expected to be sold for more than £300
million following speculation it has been listed for sale by owner Capital
& Counties (Capco) this week.
The venue, which reported a growth of 200 per cent in events in 2015,
is reportedly being sold alongside an adjacent site with planning
permission for a hotel and 90 flats, though Capco is yet to confirm the
sale.
In a press statement the company said: "Following the successful
transition of shows from the former Earls Court Exhibition Centres and
a major refurbishment programme, Capco confirms that it is conducting
a strategic review which may or may not lead to a sale of its Venues
business.
"Any further announcements will be made as appropriate."
News outlets are reporting estate agent CBRE and investment banking
firm Rothschild have been appointed to market the venue.
Olympia's value increased by 25 per cent to £265m following £45m in
refurbishments in 2014, up from £211m in December. The venue
attracts 2.5 million visitors and more than 100 shows a year.
Olympia was rated the best venue for new show launches in a survey
of event planners this year, while the venue underwent £45 million in
refurbishments in 2014.
Notable events it has hosted include The Meetings Show, Live Nation
and Easyfairs.

Home News Shows Global hotel chains and destinations drive growth for The Meetings Show
Category: Show Created on Friday, 04 December 2015 13:30
With a significant increase in domestic exhibitors as well as hotel chains from around the world, The Meetings Show is experiencing a significant expansion in
sold floor space ahead of the 2016 show. Whilst nearly 30% of bookings are from new exhibitors, the growth is supported by re-bookings from more than 50 of
2015’s main stand holders.
The growth includes new exhibitors such as: Hyatt Hotels, Melia Hotels, hotel republic, Millennium & Copthorne Hotels, Oatlands Park Hotel, Sheffield Convention Bureau,
Southport Conferences, Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau, Dubrovnik Tourist Board, National Conference Centre, Manchester Conference Centre & Hotel,
Leicester Racecourse, Eventbrite, Dataflow Events & Conference Badges, Searcys, HireTablets and MSE Meeting and Training Centre.
The growth in the exhibiting hotel providers will be of particular interest to visitors as research undertaken by The Meetings Show identified that 67% of visitors and 89% of
hosted buyers were interested in meeting with and sourcing hotels at the 2015 show.
“The response from exhibitors following last year’s show has been fantastic,” comments Steve Knight, Event Director of The Meetings Show. “It is great to see so many new
exhibitors looking to make the most of our hosted buyer offering, which is the largest of its kind in the UK. It is however the returning exhibitors such as London & Partners,
VisitScotland, Hilton Worldwide, Macdonald Hotels & Resorts and Dubai Business Events that give the show true credibility; whilst increases in stand size from the likes of
Accor Hotels, Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, the Moroccan National Tourist Office and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority demonstrate our ability to deliver year
on year.”
Sheffield Convention Bureau’s Emma France said: “Sheffield is a well-established brand and destination in the UK meetings and events market with superb infrastructure and
an impressive offer which has seen Sheffield's busiest conference calendar since 2007. The Meetings Show has now established itself as the UK’s premier event for
developing relationships and doing business with qualified buyers. We expect the show to deliver a significant return on our investment and look forward to the success it will
bring us moving forward.”
Searcys Head of Sales Johanna Byrane comments: “As the Searcys portfolio continues to expand its range of high quality venues we are constantly seeking new ways to
showcase our facilities and services whilst engaging with buyers in both domestic and international markets. In particular we are looking forward to highlighting the unique
venues amongst our portfolio, including the likes of 30 Euston Square and The Gherkin, and the format of scheduled qualified meetings appeals to us so as to make use of
our time efficiently.”
Douglas O’Neill, Managing Director of Inntel and a member of The Meetings Show’s Advisory Board, comments: “A successful trade show is reliant on its ability to evolve and
innovate, a part of which is the development of new relationships and growth in its exhibitor base. As one of the UK’s largest agencies, delivering meeting, conference,
accommodation and travel management solutions, we are constantly seeking new venues, destinations and suppliers to support our events. As long as The Meetings Show
continues to deliver new exhibitors, great education and networking opportunities it will be a must attend event for our team.”
