When the announcement of the location of the AAOE 2017 Annual Conference came, an initial reaction may have been, “Why Indianapolis?” For those who have never been to the Hoosier state’s capital city, or for those who have not visited recent-ly, the question may have been reflexive. What does Indianapolis have to offer?

The city jumped into the spotlight in 2012 when it hosted Super Bowl XLVI. Some visitors were shocked and most were impressed by Indy’s arts, culture, dining, and hospitality. Since then, more and more people have come to recognize this often-overlooked city that grows every day. Get to know more about this hidden jewel of a city that has something to offer everyone, including a long list of unique and tasty restaurants any foodie can enjoy, monuments and memori-als honoring veterans (second only to Washington, D.C.), vibrant nightlife, and art and music.

A CITY BUILT ON Sports! Known as the “amateur sports capital of the world,” Indianap-olis houses the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) headquarters, the National Federation of State High School Asso-ciations, and several NCAA athletic conferences. Although Indy is known for hosting the Super Bowl in 2012, the city began its rise in 1987 by hosting the Pan American games. Fol-lowing this, Indianapolis has hosted men’s college final four games, Big 10 events, and, of course, Super Bowl XLVI. Indy’s most well-known sports venues include Bankers Life Field-house, Lucas Oil Stadium, and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which each host numerous sporting and entertainment events every year—including the Indianapolis 500.

While the Colts, Pacers, and Indiana Fever may be sports teams with wide recognition, Indianapolis is the home of a number of other professional and amateur sports teams worth checking out! While you’re in the city this spring for the conference, an Indi-anapolis Indians game at Victory Field should be on your list of things to do. Ranked one of the top ten best minor league ballparks by Ballpark Digest, Victory Field is the perfect place to kick back, relax, and enjoy the views of Indy’s stunning downtown skyline while watching the game. If you’re lucky, your hotel guest room will have a view of the ballpark as it is just across the street from the JW Marriott where the conference will be held. The Indy Eleven, which compete in the North American Soccer League, is in its third season playing at Michael A. Carroll Stadi-um on IUPUI’s campus in downtown Indianapolis. With sold out crowds, Indy Eleven games always provide a fun and exciting expe-rience—at an affordable price! Indy also has two ice hockey teams, the Indiana Ice and Indy Fuel, in addition to a number of amateur teams that have earned the city its title as “amateur sports capital of the world.” These teams include bowling, cycling, golf, lacrosse, roller derby, and volleyball. With such a strong passion for sports running through the city’s current, attending a game is always a fun and entertaining option!

INDY’S DOWNTOWN Cultural DISTRICTS

The versatility of Indy can be best seen in its six distinct cul-tural districts, which each have an atmosphere and personality of their own. For those who appreciate the outdoors and have a love of na-ture, a visit to the Canal and White River State Park is a must. This area of downtown stretches along the Central Canal and the 250-acre White River State Park and offers a number of outdoor attractions. Walkers, runners, and bikers can enjoy the three-mile path that winds around the Canal. Bike and kayak rentals are available, and you can even take a Gondola ride through the Canal! History buffs will appreciate Indiana Avenue, a historic com-munity that sits west of downtown between the Central Canal and the White River, encompassing many neighborhoods and the IUPUI campus. The area is rich in Indy’s African-American heri-tage, featuring history, music, spirituality, and restored neighbor-hoods. To experience the heartbeat of downtown, you have to visit the Wholesale District. This is where you will find Monument Circle (which is literally the center of Indianapolis and the state of Indiana in general), Circle Centre Mall, modern skyscrapers, incredible performances, and vibrant nightlife. The JW Marriott, where the AAOE 2017 Annual Conference will be held, is located in this district, allowing access to the best attractions Indy has to offer—many of which are within walking distance of the hotel! For unique dining, shopping, and nightlife, Massachusetts Av-enue (called Mass Ave by locals) is a go-to spot downtown. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Mass Ave lies along one of four diagonal streets running into the heart of downtown. The area was known for commerce from 1870 to 1930, but when construction on I-65 in the 1960s blocked it from outside traffic, it was transformed into the vibrant arts district that exists today. If you’re interested in venturing outside the box, Fountain Square is the place for you. This funky, up-and-coming area just southeast of downtown along Virginia Avenue has a lively arts scene and is a community many working artists call home. The historic area is set up like a European Village with a town square and central fountain, and it offers a number of independent restaurants, live music, and performances.

Those from Indiana or who have traveled to Indiana are familiar with the phrase “Hoosier Hospitality,” referring to the welcoming nature of Indiana residents. Indianapolis, the capital city of the Hoosier state (and the host city for the AAOE 2017 Annual Conference), embraces this iden-tity. Hoosier is one of the oldest state nicknames, having defined Indiana residents for more than a century and a half—and yet many Hoosiers and non-Hoosiers alike are unsure of the origin of this popular but enigmatic state nickname.

Several fun, if unproved, theories exist:

• A popular theory is that Hoosier derives from the

(supposed) Native American word for corn, “Hoosa.”

• Another common story is that Indiana employees of

a canal contractor named Hoosier were referred to

as “Hoosier’s Men,” and eventually this name came

to define all of Indiana residents.

• According to myth, early Indiana settlers asked

“Who’s ear?” when they found an ear lying on the

floor the day after a tavern fight occurred. The story

goes that this phrase then morphed into the word

“Hoosier.”

• It has also been said that early Indiana settlers

would say “Who’s yere [here]?” when there was a

knock at the door, and the phrase was then short-

ened to “Hoosier?”

• Yet another story proposes that Indiana settlers

would ask “Who’s your [relative]?” It has been said

that this question, too, was shortened to “Hoosier?”

An undisputed answer may never be found behind the origin of Hoosier, but whatever the original definition may have been, Indiana residents today proudly wear the name Hoosier to represent everything that makes Indiana a great place to call home.

INDIANAPOLIS: A Monumental CITY

The monuments and memorials of Indianapolis are a must-see when in the city. You will only find more monuments and memo-rials honoring veterans in Washington, D.C. They are all conve-niently located downtown within walking distance of each other. To make it even simpler, Walk Indianapolis has put together an informative, self-guided walking tour (walkindianapolis.org) for anyone interested in learning about the history of these sites while visiting them. Indy’s best known monument sits in the very center of the city. Officially named the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, but com-monly referred to as Monument Circle, the location is significant to Indianapolis’s history. It was originally planned as the Gover-nor’s Mansion by Alexander Ralston, who worked for Washington, D.C. designer Pierre L’Enfant. Ralston was tasked with creating the plans for Indiana’s capital city, which was nothing but forest when he began. Unconvinced the city would ever experience sig-nificant growth, he plotted one square mile with the Governor’s Mansion in the center. Due to the very public location, no governor ever lived in the mansion built on the Circle in 1827. In its place, the state decided to construct a monument to soldiers serving in several wars which finally was completed in 1901. With the figure of Victory crown-ing the top, this first monument in the United States dedicated to the common soldier is 284 feet tall, just 15 feet shorter than the Statue of Liberty. Other memorials and monuments downtown honoring veter-ans include the Indiana World War Memorial and Museum, the Vietnam and Korean War Memorials, the World War II Memorial, and Veterans Memorial Plaza.

Start Planning Your Indy Bucket List Now

If you are visiting the city, you will want to check out all of the options of things going on and plan accordingly to make sure you have time for everything on your wish list. A great resource is the Visit Indy website (www.vistindy.com). The site includes guides and maps to help you easily find everything you are looking for in Indy. Also be sure to check out their Things to Do and Where to Eat lists, as well as the Collections they have put together for things to do based on specific interests, such as history, nightlife, outdoor attractions, and food. A quick search will show just how much there is to do! Come experience Indianapolis for yourself!

Alex Sheen Sunday, April 23 • Opening Session

Alex Sheen is the founder of because I said I would, a social movement and non-profit dedicated to bettering humanity through promises made and kept. Sparked by the loss of his father, Alex and his organization send “promise cards” to anyone anywhere in the world at no cost. Alex is someone who truly honors commitment. He once walked over 240 miles across the entire state of Ohio in 10 days to fulfill a promise. In just two years, because I said I would has sent over 3.15 million promise cards to over 153 different countries. The promises written on these cards have made headlines around the world. His charitable projects and awareness cam-

paigns have been featured on ABC World News with Diane Sawyer, CNN, The Today Show, NPR, The Los Angeles Times and many other programs.

Mike Leavitt Tuesday, April 25 • Closing Session

Mike Leavitt is the founder and chairman of Leavitt Partners where he helps cli-ents navigate the future as they transition to new and better models of care. In previous roles, Mike served in the Cabinet of President George W. Bush (as Ad-ministrator of the Environmental Protection Agency and Secretary of Health and Human Services) and as a three-time elected governor of Utah. In 1993, Mike was elected governor of Utah. He served three terms (1993-2003). In 2003, he joined the Cabinet of President George W. Bush, serving in two positions: first as administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (2003-2005) and then as secretary of Health and Human Services (2005-2009). At HHS,

he administered a $750 billion budget — nearly 25 percent of the entire federal budget — and 67,000 employees. He led the implementation of the Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Pro-gram. The task required the design, systematization, and implementation of a plan to provide 43 million seniors with a new prescription drug benefit. By the end of the first year, enroll-ments exceeded projections, prices were lower than projected, and seniors expressed high levels of satisfaction. Collaborator is a word that comes up repeatedly when one examines Mike’s background. His skill led his colleague governors to elect him as chairman of the National Governors As-sociation, the Republican Governors Association and Western Governors’ Association. His book—Finding Allies, Building Alliances—was released in September 2013 by Jossey-Bass Publishers and chronicles his expertise and passion for collaboration. Mike is a seasoned diplomat, leading U.S. delegations to more than 50 countries. He has conducted negotiations on matters related to health, the environment, and trade. At the con-clusion of his service, the Chinese government awarded him the China Public Health Award – the first time this award has ever been given to a foreign government official.

Effective Utilization of PAs and NPs in the Orthopaedic Practice: Hot Topics for 2017

Physician assistants (PAs) and nurse practitioners (NPs) have been shown to provide quality, cost effective care and have become integral members of the orthopaedic workforce. Yet, these providers are often underutilized and misunderstood. This session will dispel the myths and urban legends regarding the utilization of PAs and NPs by providing detailed information on scope of practice, billing and reimbursement rules (with a focus on Medicare), and strategies for maximal utilization in a variety of settings. Hot Topics include “incident-to” billing, split/shared visit billing, billing for x-ray interpretation, fracture care, and concurrent surgery. Federal fraud enforcement trends for services provided by PAs/NPs will also be covered.

Learning Objectives:• Describe efficiencies and opportunities to maximize utilization and ROI of PAs and NPs as providers in an orthopaedic practice. • Avoid allegations of fraud and abuse by implementing billing and reimbursement rules for PAs and NPs. • Dispel myths and misunderstandings regarding the utilization of PAs and NPs. • Access regulatory resources specific to PA and NP practice.

Tricia Marriott, PA-C, MPAS, MJ, CHCA graduate of the Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program, Tricia Marriott has practiced as a PA for more than 30 years, with 23 years in ortho-paedics. Marriott now serves as the American Academy of PA’s Senior Director, Regulatory and Professional Advocacy and Principal Advisor for the Center for Healthcare Leadership & Management, presenting extensively on PA/NP utiliza-tion, scope of practice, billing and reimbursement, and regulatory compliance to physicians, practice administrators, and compliance/risk managers. She continues to practice part-time at Yale. Marriott completed a Master of Jurisprudence in health law at the Loyola University Chicago School of Law and Certification in Healthcare Compliance.

EDUCATIONAL SESSIONSHealth care constantly changes and evolves, making it essential that practice executives stay up-to-date investing in industry-specific professional education and development. This year, the AAOE Annual Conference includes new session formats as well as a different way of look-ing at educational content categories.

The categories – Nuts & Bolts, Strategic, and On the Horizon— signify the type of informa-tion that will be presented during the session and what you will take away.

Nuts & Bolts – tools and resources to perform the day-to-day operations required for your job—the “nuts and bolts” you need to succeed. After attending these sessions, you will be able to apply the information learned immediately. These sessions will cover different areas of practice management including marketing, human resources, finance, and compliance.

Strategic – for practice executives planning growth and positioning, or who are looking to address an issue within their practice. Learn what is needed to create a strategic plan to move your practice forward in the coming year. After attending these sessions, you will have the knowledge and tools to go back to your office and develop a strategy specific to your practice’s needs.

On the Horizon – prepare for new initiatives that are coming. These “hot topic” trends may be frequently talked about, but only a few practices have begun implementing them. Learn about these emerging trends and how to prepare from practices who have already start-ed. Make sure you are ready for these changes and learn how they will affect your practice.

The session formats are how information will be presented if something different from the standard 60-minute lecture or panel presentation. Specific time blocks are devoted to Camp-fire, Deep Dive, and Fast Track sessions. One session in almost every time block will include an Around the Horn session.

Campfire – short educational bursts in an informal, non-traditional setting. Presenters get right to the information you need to take away from the session, offering 3-5 practical tips during the first 15 minutes and then taking questions for the remaining time.

Deep Dive – 90-minute sessions for topics that require a thorough presenta-tion and discussion of the information. These sessions allow attendees to really dig into a topic. At least 30 minutes reserved for questions and discussion by attendees.

Fast Track – 15-minute educational presentations allow attendance at multiple fast tracks during the single session block. Each period is timed and a signal given to move to the next room for another bite-sized presentation.

Around the Horn – case studies and group discussion to facilitate learning on a given topic. Session begins with an overview of the case study for 10-15 min-utes, then attendees divide into small groups based on common areas of inter-est, practice demographic, or viewpoint. Groups have some time to analyze and discuss the case study before the presenter leads a discussion to identify lessons learned.
