In 2016, AAOE welcomed 314 new members. With a strong retention rate of 84%, the association ended the year with 1,643 total members. To promote the group membership option, more than 800 individual members were contacted via email with information on creating a group membership for their practice. This campaign resulted in 50 new members.

Throughout the year, efforts were made to promote the association to physicians to further grow membership. Current physician members were surveyed on their needs. This will allow AAOE to create member benefi ts that better meet those identifi ed needs.AAOE membership continues to grow thanks to the efforts of the AAOE Membership Council, Board of Directors, and all volunteers working to promote and enhance membership benefi ts.

2016 ANNUAL REPORT

Treasurer’s Reportby Brian Bizub, BSHA

Brian Bizub, BSHA, Palm Beach Orthopaedic Institute2016-2017 AAOE Treasurer

It has been a pleasure and honor to serve the AAOE as its Treasurer over the past year. I would like to express my gratitude to Ron Chorzewski for spending a great deal of his time preparing me for this role and commend Addy Kujawa for her support and guidance.

In reviewing the revenue and expenses for the AAOE, the organization faced an enormous challenge this year with respect to unexpected AAOE staff vacancies weeks prior to our Annual Conference. The staff vacancies incurred costs that were not budgeted, but the AAOE staff and members were instrumental in managing expenses. Despite many challenges throughout the conference, AAOE maintained their fi nancial strength without the need to access reserve funds. Total revenue ended at $108,184 under budget and expenses were under budget by $65,234. The 2016 Annual Conference was a success, but fell short of meeting targeted budget revenue due to

the decrease in registrations, and size constraints for Exhibit Hall revenue. Furthermore, our Short-Term Investment Funds have grown a modest 5.1% over the course of 2016 and are within the expected parameters given our selected risk stratifi cation.

It is worthy to mention that, per the AAOE Financial Policies and Procedures, the organization is expected to have funds equal to 50% of its annual budget in Short Term Investment Funds and 50% of its annual budget in Operational Cash. This is an important point that speaks to why the organization has signifi cant monies in reserve. We fi nished 2016 with 47% of our annual budget in Operational Reserves and 59% of our annual budget in our Short-Term Investment Funds.

To end, AAOE has completed their outside audit by Kehlenbrink, Lawrence & Pauckner CPAs. AAOE remains compliant with the AAOE Financial Policies and Procedures with no recommendations made by Kehlenbrink, Lawrence & Pauckner CPAs.

I would like to thank AAOE President Jan Vest, Addy Kujawa, Ron Chorzewski, and the entire board for their efforts to create a balanced budget for 2017 that will continue to allow the organization the ability and resources to grow.

Patricia L. Brewster, MHA, FACMPE, IntraHealth Group/OrthoAtlanta2016-2017 AAOE Annual Conference Chair

More than 500 orthopaedic practice executives and their staff attended the AAOE 2016 Annual Conference in San Francisco, California. The conference offered nine educational blocks divided into topical tracks, ensuring the conference education met attendees’ professional development needs.

Attendees were also invited to networking and social events to meet new members and other industry peers. Networking by Region allowed attendees to discuss hot industry topics with other practice executives from their part of the country facing similar issues. Attendees could also connect with peers from similar sized practices at the Networking by Practice Size event. The glamorous, black tie optional Opening Reception held at San Francisco City Hall celebrated AAOE’s legacy.

Opening Keynote speaker Patrick Lencioni, bestselling author of books on organizations and teams, including The Advantage, addressed the importance of improving organizational health to tap into the knowledge and expertise that already exists within an organization. Closing Keynote speaker Shari Harley, author and founder of Candid Culture, provided insight on what the best companies are doing to create and maintain a successful organizational culture.

One hundred thirty-four companies exhibited at the Annual Conference, and 161 booths were sold. Additionally, 27 sponsorships were purchased – surpassing the number of sponsorships sold in 2015.

2016 ANNUAL REPORT

Government Aff airsby Joel James

Joel James, Signature Medical Group2016-2017 AAOE Advocacy Council Chair

In June 2016, AAOE members voted to formally adopt the drafted bylaws of the American Alliance of Orthopaedic Executives, a 501(c)(6) organization. The ratifi cation of these bylaws allows AAOE to further expand its advocacy efforts for the benefi t of our members and the broader orthopaedic community.

To lay the infrastructure of this expanded advocacy, the Advocacy Council created four pillars of advocacy that will guide our association’s advocacy efforts.

These pillars include:• To promote and expand the role of orthopaedic practice executives in the federal policy- making process;• To enhance the practice of orthopaedic medicine through statutory changes that promote equitable competition in the healthcare marketplace;• To preserve the ability of orthopaedic practices to vertically integrate ancillary

services as allowed under current federal law; and• To minimize, to the extent possible, the increasing government regulatory cost burden on AAOE member practices.

These pillars have guided us to one of our most active and productive years in the history of AAOE Advocacy. In 2016, AAOE has met with House and Senate committees to discuss much needed changes to the Stark Law (while protecting the In-Offi ce Ancillary Services Exception) and the Federal Anti-Kickback Law, met with individual lawmakers to discuss value-based payments and their connections to Stark, and received National Quality Forum endorsement of three spinal outcomes measures that AAOE had submitted for CMS inclusion in the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS).

2016 was also a year of fi rsts for AAOE as we have led the charge to repeal cuts to computed radiography, currently planned for January 1, 2018. We continue to work with members of the House and Senate to introduce the legislation for inclusion in one of the appropriations bills that will be introduced this year. In another fi rst for AAOE, the Advocacy Council began planning the fi rst stand-alone Capitol Hill Day to be held September 11 and 12, 2017. Preparations for this began in September 2016 and resulted in $29,000 raised from AAOE member practices to support the effort. Look for more information to be released about this event in mid-2017.

AAOE’s legislative and regulatory newsletter, The OrthoActivist, proved to be popular reading material last year with an average of 9,000 opens each month. We encourage members to continue reading this newsletter and to continue forwarding the newsletter to your staff and physicians as the practice of orthopaedic medicine and the practice of orthopaedic practice administration continues to evolve.

The Advocacy Council is excited with the progress we have made in 2016 and look forward to more progress in 2017 and beyond.

Communications HighlightsIn 2016, the AAOE Writer’s Resource Pool was developed. This is a monthly email with information on article topics for the AAOE eNewsletter and Latest News blog on the AAOE website. AAOE members are invited to sign up for the Writer’s Resource Pool to receive the monthly email and volunteer to serve as sources or write articles.

In total, 94 articles were posted on the Latest News blog on the AAOE website in 2016 (or an average of almost two articles posted per week).

Education Reportby Jason M. McCormick, MHA

Jason M. McCormick, MHA, Campbell Clinic Orthopaedics2016-2017 AAOE Education Council Chair

In 2016, AAOE continued to enhance its educational offerings for members. Members had the opportunity to attend an average of three educational, orthopaedic practice specifi c webinars per month – many of which were free of charge for members. Additionally, a package of eight webinars, titled the “Works Hacks Series” was developed and offered to members and nonmembers to provide tips and tricks for becoming more productive and stress-free in daily working life. AAOE members did receive a discount on registration for the webinar series. In 2016, 241 individuals

participated in AAOE webinars. The committee also began work on a new educational series that will be released later this year. Aimed at new managers or support staff of member and non-member organizations ,the new series, called “Practice Management 101”, will offer education on fundamental principles of orthopaedic practice management.

The Education Council also created an application and approval process for potential webinar speakers to ensure proposed webinars will provide relevant, educational material to attendees.

2016 ANNUAL REPORT

CEO’s Look AheadBy Addy M. Kujawa, CAE

Addy M. Kujawa, CAE, Chief Executive Offi cer

The leadership of AAOE use the mission and objectives to guide the direction of this relatively young organization. On that strong foundation and with your support, AAOE continues to grow and develop new resources that increase the value and position of the organization. AAOE’s membership continues to grow each year and is on track to surpass the historic high of 2016. The professional management team also has grown to eight full-time individuals – double from just four years ago – as needed to support the ongoing growth of the organization.

It’s exciting to report that in 2017, AAOE will be launching three major programs thanks to your support and investment:

AAOE Casting and Splinting Program: This hands-on instructional program was built through the involvement of not just a committee and staff, but with an added subject matter task force. This group of experts from across the country worked diligently to ensure the program was appropriate for use by most AAOE

member practices. The program consists of a full-color manual with step-by-step details of splint and cast application and removal, professionally produced videos from two vantage points rather than just one, customized testing, and a practical portion performed in offi ce. This program is scheduled to launch in May 2017.

Practice Management 101 by AAOE: By popular demand, the Education Council put together a course for those who are new to orthopaedic practice management, may be interested in advancement, or staff identifi ed for career development. The online course includes 10 classes on foundational practice management topics such as medical offi ce accounting, insurance contracts, corporate compliance law, and more. The PM101 program is scheduled to launch in June 2017.

Hill Day for OrthoAdvocates: With the 2017 addition of the American Alliance of Orthopaedic Executives, for the fi rst time AAOE members will convene on The Hill to present a united voice to Congress around the issues facing orthopaedic practice administrators. Topics will focus on the need to reduce the cost and administrative burden of laws and regulations currently affecting all members, as well as key industry issues. This event is scheduled for September 2017.

In addition to these new programs, signifi cant progress has been made on the AAOE Benchmarking Survey including customized surveys, online videos, a webpage fi lled with helpful resources requested

by members. All of the changes have simplifi ed the process and shortened the time needed to prepare and complete the survey. As more members participate, the value of survey results continues to increase, as well.

I hope you share in my excitement about the future of AAOE. I encourage you to volunteer on a council, a committee, or perhaps take on a new project that sounds exciting to you. Remember, AAOE is YOUR association. Get involved; be a part of shaping the future!

I want to hear from you! Contact me directly at 317-749-0625 or [email protected] to share your thoughts, questions, concerns, and fresh ideas. Looking forward to it!
