HIST

ORY

Teton Village, fi rst known as just “Teton” was one of the last places in Jackson Hole to be homesteaded; in the early 1900’s, the base area was Crystal Springs Ranch. In 1947, high school teachers Ken & Shirley Clatterbaugh bought this ranch and ran it as a summer camp for girls. The ranch had a main house and several smaller non-winter-ized guest cabins, which were located where the Alpenhof is today. There was also a recreation hall and a big barn that sat at the base of Rendezvous Mountain. In 1947, Paul McCollister moved to Jackson Hole from the San Francisco Bay Area. He bought a 398-acre cattle ranch and became the president of the Jackson Hole Ski Club, an organization that trained local ski racers at Snow King Mountain. By 1959, he started researching locations for a new ski area. Flying above the valley with a friend, McCollister spotted Rendezvous Mountain. In 1961, he and his business partner, Alex Morley, a native of Wyoming, began purchasing the Crystal Springs Ranch from the Clatterbaughs. In 1963, McCollister and Morley formed the Jackson Hole Ski Corporation, and in 1964 they started building lifts and cutting runs. In 1965, Apres Vous Mountain opened to skiers and by Christmas of 1965, the Oberreit family opened the Alpenhof Lodge; other buildings in the base area that fi rst winter were the Aerial Tram dock (still under construction), the Sojourner Inn, and the Seven Levels Inn. In 1966 the Aerial Tram opened. In 1992, McCollister sold Jackson Hole Ski Corp. to the Kemmerer family and almost immediately the ski area began to see improvements with upgraded chairlifts and the ski area’s fi rst gondola, the Bridger Gondola, along with new intermediate trails. In the late 1990’s and in to the 2000’s, the Village began to see more changes including a start to paid parking, the fi rst spa, and several more hotels. Teton Village now houses the third generation Aerial Tram, which can carry up to 100 skiers/riders to the top of Rendezvous Mountain per trip. In 2019, the Teton Village Association, with support from Jackson Hole Mountain Resort and Jackson Hole Public Art, restored one of the second-generation Tram cars which is on display in the Village Commons. Today, Teton Village, home to the now world-renowned Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, off ers plenty of lodging, dining, spa and recreational amenities for all. The Village Commons, originally consisting of a fi shing pond and re-built in the mid-2000’s to what you see today, is home to a playground, pop jet fountain, concerts and events during the summer months and an ice skating rink and snow castles during the winter months.

NATIONAL PARK FAQS

Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks are working with federal, state, and local public health authorities to closely monitor the COVID-19 pandemic and determine access. The health and safety of National Park visitors, employees, volunteers and partners remain the focus of park operational decisions, based on ongoing consultation with local and state leaders and public health offi cials. The parks are implementing the latest guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and local and state authorities to promote social distancing and other preventive actions. Visitors will be urged to be responsible and to do their part when visiting the parks. Please visit the park websites for the latest information when planning your visit: Grand Teton: www.nps.gov/grteYellowstone: www.nps.gov/yell

First established as a national park in 1929, Grand Teton National Park consisted of only 96,000 acres. During a trip in the 1920’s, John D. Rockefeller Jr. began purchasing land surrounding the Tetons as a way to protect it. He handed over his newly purchased 221,000 acres to the federal government with the agreement that they protect it. Present day Grand Teton National Park off ers over 200 miles of hiking trails, seven moraine lakes and over 100 alpine lakes.Yellowstone was the world’s first national park, created in 1872 — 18 years before Wyoming became a state. Yellowstone National Park is home to approximately 50% of the world’s hydrothermal features; among these are the largest and most varied on earth.Over 60 species of mammals, over 100 species of birds, and a half dozen game fish can be found in the Jackson Hole/Yellowstone area. Most notable are big game such as elk, moose, bison, deer, antelope, mountain lion, grizzly and black bears, gray wolf and coyote, rare birds such as the bald eagle, trumpeter swan, blue heron, osprey, and native game fi sh such as the Snake River cutthroat trout and mountain whitefi sh.
