The Delaware Valley baseball team has reached the postseason in 10 of the last 20 seasons with seven

trips to the Middle Atlantic Conference/Freedom Conference playoffs and six invitations to the Eastern

College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Southern Region Championships.

The Aggies won the MAC Freedom regular-season title in 1998 and reached the conference championship

game in both 1998 and 2002. They were crowned ECAC champs in 1999 to cap a school-record 31-7

season and won the title once again in 2003.

Individually, Delaware Valley has had seven MAC/Freedom Conference Most Valuable Players since 1998:

Matt Altieri (1998), Jason Stackhouse (1999), Tony DeLude (2001 and 2002), Mark Roth (2003), Zach

Jakubowski (2008) and Kyle Wenger (2015). Roth and Brandon McCabe earned All-American honors in

2003 and 2004 respectively.

Head Coach Bob AltieriA 1992 graduate of Delaware Valley University and a member of its Athletic Hall of Fame, Bob Altieri has produced a record 307 wins and seven trips to the postsea-son in his 17 years as head coach. He recorded his 300th career victory against FDU-Florham on March 19, 2016.

Altieri was promoted to head coach in 2000 following a six-year stint as an as-sistant. Despite losing the team’s top three pitchers to graduation in ‘99, Altieri directed the Aggies to a 23-16 record and earned trips to both the Middle Atlantic Conference and Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) playoffs. He was named the MAC Freedom Coach of the Year for his efforts.

The 2001 edition of the Aggies compiled the best 17-game start in program history with a 15-2 mark and right fielder Tony DeLude was named the conference’s Most Valuable Player. DeLude repeated as conference MVP in 2002 and Rich Bayachek was named the Pitcher of the Year as the team won 24 games, reached the confer-ence championship game and was selected for the ECAC playoffs.

In 2003, Delaware Valley qualified for the Freedom Conference playoffs and had the conference MVP for the fifth time in the last six years as first baseman Mark Roth earned the accolade. Roth was later named a second team All-American.

The Aggies took first place honors in the Freedom Conference during the regular season and was selected to host the ECAC South Region Championships in 2004. The team won both ECAC contests to capture the title and finish 27-13. Left fielder Brandon McCabe was named a third team All-American after the season.

In 2008, the Aggies were picked to finish last in the preseason conference coaches’ poll. Instead, Altieri and his squad went 25-18, qualified for the Freedom Con-ference playoffs and reached the ECAC South Region Championship Game. They followed the next year with a 21-13 record and another berth in the ECAC playoffs.

The Delaware Valley University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has run a Toys For Tots campaign during the

holiday season for a number of years. For many of those years, the DelVal baseball team has made the biggest donation

of any individual or group. This past year, the team filled up two large boxes with toys ranging from Frisbees to fire trucks.

According to the organization’s website, the primary goal of Toys For Tots is to deliver, through a new toy at Christmas,

a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters that will assist them in becoming responsible, productive and patriotic

citizens.

Teaching The Next GenerationIn March of 2016, the Delaware Valley University baseball team held its inaugural Winter Youth Clinic. Twenty-five kids

ranging from ages 6 to 17 attended the first of what is expected to become an annual event.

The kids learned the fundamentals of hitting, defense and baserunning as the Aggie coaches and players worked individ-

ually with each camper. They worked in 45-minute rotations at each area of specialization and it allowed campers to get

a jump start and learn new skills for their upcoming youth baseball seasons.

All proceeds from the clinic went in support of DelVal’s Spring Break trip to Fort Pierce. Florida.
