Transcript of Aberdour Festival Programme 2016

30th 31st 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th29th

The support for this year’s Festival has been phenomenal and we have been blown away with the generosity of people, businesses and companies who are linked in some way to this fantastic community and Festival. From our fundraising Quiz and Launch night to the Festival itself, the contributions have been amazing and have enhanced the Programme massively.

Scottish Book Trust, which support Live Literature, have again supported us to bring you Nick Sharratt – keeping costs low.

AVD Ltd are once again providing the lighting, sound and audio visual equipment (and some advice) during the Festival week with donations to local food banks. We will be collecting throughout the week donations towards this to support the great work AVD do for the local Communities. This year many of our local businesses have supported an event or part of the Programme to keep costs affordable for you. From a Children’s Programme which has been supported by McLean Forth and ForthRoad and Marquee lighting installations by The Green Witch to overall Programme contributions from Exxon. Not forgetting the Easter vs Wester Football Match by Willies Newsagents and The Purple Shop.

Some individual events will have their sponsors noted next to them throughout the Programme and this year and previous years include (in no particular order) ARC, Counselling Matters, Inglis Vets, McTaggart’s, Run 4 It, Lonie’s, Corte Franca Association, The Purple Shop, Aberdour Pharmacy, Tesco, Dobbies, Room with A View, The Crescent, Holloway Interiors and Coastal Reflections. Raffle prizes have been and will be donated, talks provided, quizzes compiled and sold, events co-ordinated, materials supplied and venues provided by: Tranquilita, The Aberdour Hotel, Antiques and Gifts, St Fillan’s, St Columba’s, Hair by Alexis, Aberdour Heritage Centre and Station Gardens,

The Beauty Room, café at Number 16, The Cedar Inn, The Woodside Hotel, Masonic Hall, The Quay Gallery, Coastal Reflections, Blakes, Hearts Desire, Foresters Arms, Valentine Jewellery, Tracy Gordine Designs and The Mitchells. We just want to acknowledge the ongoing support this year, previous years and future years.

Our Marquee acts will be able to ready themselves in McTaggart’s Green Room whilst you can enjoy refreshments from Molson Coors Brewing Company Bar or satiate your taste buds from our Mitchell’s barbeque where delightful Puddledub burgers will be on offer. You are able to enjoy perusing this wonderful Festival Programme with thanks again to Standard Life Ltd who have produced this at their cost. Ticketing, this year, has been kindly designed and supplied by The Proctors and on-going printing support from Duncannon Executive Search.

Our box offices, once again, are being run brilliantly by McTaggart’s, The Purple Shop and The Aberdour Pharmacy. Support THEM by being patient!

The 2016 Festival Committee is immensely grateful to ALL our supporters – THANK YOU. Not forgetting a huge thank you to our most loyal supporters – YOU… Without you – there would be no Festival!

If we have missed anyone in this list, we apologise profusely. Your contribution has not been overlooked!

Thank you to all our supporters of the 2016 Festival – we couldn’t have done it without YOU!

I am excited to present to you a wonderful, energetic and diverse programme that hopefully will leave you feeling spoiled for choice. This is no mean feat considering the variety and high quality of the 32 previous years’ events that have led to this being ‘possibly the best small festival in the world’. Let’s hope you agree that we have done it justice.

Following the feedback we received from a fantastic 32nd Festival – we have tried to incorporate your views of what you liked, wanted more of or indeed would prefer less of into our Programme this year. We hope we have achieved this. Your views are extremely important to us in putting together a balanced programme to suit all ages, tastes and abilities. Now in its fourth decade, the festival exists by adapting to the ever changing needs of the community – YOUR community. To continue this success, we will encourage you to share your opinions, dreams and expectations throughout the Festival and afterwards. Look out for feedback info! This becomes the backbone of next year’s Festival!

This Year is the Scottish Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design as well as the 100th Anniversary of the birth of Roald Dahl and 400th of Shakespeare’s death. These celebrations represent the foundations of our Programme and I hope you enjoy your journey throughout the week as you meander through a colourful parade of Roald Dahl characters, welcome back Aberdour Players and appreciate the unique designs in the open gardens at the close. All of this made possible by our sponsors and supporters mentioned before.

The programme proudly presents a wide variety of events, performances, activities and talks throughout both the Main and Children’s Programme that represent our 2016 theme of Innovation, Architecture & Design. The Aberdour Festival is committed to

celebrating diversity, promoting tolerance and respect as well as encouraging understanding and growth and endeavours to provide an opportunity for this within a full programme of sport, arts, science, nature, history, food, drink and humour. Hopefully there is something in here to make you think, smile, pause, savour or just simply enjoy.

Earlier I mentioned supporters and sponsors but in all honesty I could fill the entire programme with each and every one of you who help in many ways, some I’m not even aware of yet. If you would like to help in any way, big or small, it’s not too late – contact [email protected] stating how you’d like to help and your availability.

This year we have launched Friends of the Festival (FotF) to support us to bring you the best we can at low cost. General Membership is £20 and 100 Club is £100 – see website for details. Go on – Be a pal!

Have a great Festival. Hope to see you some time over the week!

Laughter is the best medicine! Cheaper than therapy so get yourself down to the Marquee for a night of side splitting, jaw aching great Scottish banter. I don’t know how we’ve done it but we have!

Headliner Patrick Monahan blends a high energy comedy style with hilarious and engaging topical and observational material. Known for working a room, Patrick is adored by his audiences with whom he makes an effortless connection! The family’s favourite funny man (and occasional disco dancer) is currently on tour across the UK with his brand new stand-up show The Disco Years!

‘A comedian with a heart of gold… it’s not laboured but it makes you think, even while you grin from ear to ear at all the fun you’ve just had’

(One4Review)

Compere Jojo Sutherland performs in comedy clubs worldwide where she is in as much demand for her compere abilities as she is for her comedy routine. Her natural stage presence alongside her “healthy neglect” attitude to life proves extremely popular amongst many and varied audiences including the armed forces where she remains as one of the few women to go to military bases to entertain the troops. She is currently supporting Tom Stade on tour.

‘A performer the audience could have watched all night’ (The Herald)

With support from Larry Dean, Scottish Comedian of the Year 2013.

The Caravan Obscura is an installation created by light artist Kenny Bean. It is essentially a camera obscura inside a caravan. A series of lenses and mirrors are used to project the scene outside the caravan onto the ceiling from both sides. “It is deceptively simple but never fails to amaze those who enter the caravan”.

Outside the caravan there is a chance to try out specially designed boxes that you put on your head to make you see upside down.

Camera Obscura buildings were made popular in Victorian times as public attractions and there were a great many of these built on beachfronts around the UK. There were also enterprising Victorians who travelled around the country using mobile tents and wagons converted into camera obscuras.

– 5.00pm-7.00pm (includes Interval) – The Institute, Shore Road – £5.00 at the door includes a glass of wine or soft drink – Open to All

In 1854 Dr. John Rae from Orkney solved the two great remaining mysteries of the Arctic. He discovered the last link in the fabled Northwest Passage and was the first to bring back news of the tragic fate of the Franklin Expedition which had disappeared without trace nine years before. Instead of being treated as a hero, however, John Rae was ignored and ostracized by a disbelieving Victorian society. He faced a campaign of abuse led by Sir John Franklin’s widow and supported by the writings of Charles Dickens. His true worth and great achievements were not recognised at the time and he was forgotten. With recent further discoveries, however, along with forensic investigation and new information now available and seen today from a modern perspective, Dr. John Rae is at last being remembered and honoured as an International figure and arguably the greatest of the Arctic Explorers. Ken Stewart (MBChB. MD. FRCS Ed. FRCOG ) worked as a Doctor in Orkney in the late 1960s when he first became aware of Dr. John Rae, though little seemed to be known

of him at that time. Then 18 months ago, Franklin’s ship, the ‘Erebus’, was discovered under the ice in the High Arctic and Ken’s interest was reawakened. He has since visited the Scott Polar Research Institute at Cambridge University and read through much of John Rae’s unpublished but fascinating autobiography and letters. Ken is now an enthusiastic member of the John Rae Society based in Stromness, Orkney.

Heron Valley plus support

– 8.00pm-late (doors open 7.30pm) – The Festival Marquee – Tickets: £5.00 – BBQ available

Always on the lookout for something a bit different, ABFest 2016 are excited to bring to you Heron Valley. A lively young ceilidh band from Argyll who aren’t afraid to put their own touch on Traditional Scottish tunes, on instruments such as keyboard, guitar, vocals, fiddle, accordion, pipes, whistles, drums – and any other musical instrument they can get their hands on! The band started off in 2011 and in 2014 they welcomed two new members to enrich their professional and diverse sound.

Their traditional tunes and songs combined with lively rhythms and chords result in a very exciting atmosphere at Heron Valley’s gigs. With their years of experience and enthusiasm for the music they play, Heron Valley can guarantee a brilliant night at any occasion!

We have also persuaded our local master of the strings, Colin Mackenzie, to bring back his band Grass Routes with their ever expanding country classics and American Swing to start the evening off with a great big bang!

So help us bring the last night in the marquee to a thundering close with toe tapping, jigging and dancing till the sun goes down (and a bit after).
