Membership Forum Luncheon Speaker

Dick GraderDick Grader has been President & CEO of National Frozen Foods Corporation, one of the nation’s largest private-label frozen vegetable companies, since 2003. Since joining the Seattle-based company in 1988, he also held positions as Sales Manager, Vice President, and President.

Dick currently serves as Chair for Northwest Harvest, a hunger relief agency in Washington. Previously, he served the trade organization American Frozen Foods Institute as Chairman of the Board, Vice President, and as a member of several Executive Committees. Dick is a graduate of Oregon State University and resides in Seattle.

First , let me o f f e r m y congratulations to the award winners and all the nominees for the 68th

annual DSA. Nearly 400 people attended the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce showcase event last month to honor yet another fantastic slate of Albany’s fi nest humanitarians. During the acceptance speeches I heard a number of comments about what makes Albany such a special place to live and work. I found myself nodding and agreeing with everything they said. In my duties as Chamber Chair I have come to realize, even more, just how special a place Albany really is. The reasons are numerous, but please allow me to tell a story to illustrate what I think is one of the most important.

One of my responsibilities as chair is to attend all of the Business After Hours (BAH) events and introduce the host business so they can say a few words. BAH is always a well-attended event and the reason is easy to see. Social interaction, food, drinks and door prizes, what could be better? As should be expected when business people congregate in such a setting, many conversations start up and soon the room is a buzz with chatter. When it comes time for the presentation from the host business it can be a bit of a challenge to get everyone to quiet down and pay attention. Not an issue with the Albany Chamber members. They hear the bell ring and very quickly the room is quiet and the conversations do not start again until the informal program ends.

In my range of duties with NW Natural I represent the company in several cities and therefore belong to many different chambers of commerce. I attended a BAH for a chamber in another town, that will remain nameless for this message, just days after the Albany Area February BAH. I was astonished at the difference. The setting and course of the event was similar, but when it came time for the host business to make a presentation I estimate over half of the crowd continued to talk and the host had a microphone! Throughout the entire presentation the

nattering from the attendees did not stop, in fact I think it was louder as they had to talk over the sound level of the P/A system. So here we have people coming to an event partaking in food and drink sponsored by the host business and not having enough respect for the speaker to be quiet, for just a few minutes. I know the host and I was so mortifi ed by the behavior of the crowd that I took it upon myself to apologize to him at the end of the event. The group’s conduct was embarrassing and often I have heard people from this town describe themselves as “enlightened”.

At The DSA event I could hear the crowd was really enjoying the event during the entertainment by Keeter Stuart and Trio Bravo and I thought to myself it may be diffi cult to get their attention to start the program when the entertainment was over. I was wrong; the Albany folks settled down real quick and showed the respect due to all the presenters and award winners.

Respect, common courtesy, deference, reverence, admiration or regard call it what you want, but we all desire it and by and large we all deserve it. One of the simplest and easiest forms of respect we can give to someone is to listen to them and not interrupt as they speak. When the Good Lord designed us with one mouth and two ears I think he was trying to tell us something. The respect the people of Albany show to one another is just one of those many qualities that make our community a special place. Most of you are probably thinking it is no big deal, it’s just the way you are and what you were taught to do. In a way you are right, it is what parents should teach their kids to do. However, this human quality of respect is disappearing from our society, in places that are not like Albany. Albany, Oregon is what is right about America. My hat is off to those of you that continue to show common courtesy and respect to each other in your daily lives.

Personal Background: I was born and raised in Albany. I was in the initial graduating class of “West Albany High School” in 1972. I began my college career at LBCC and completed my degree in Speech Communications with an emphasis in Business Management at SOC, now Southern Oregon University.

Business Marketing Niche’: Local and established in 1960, we specialize in purchasing scrap metals for recycling while maintaining a strong emphasis on reselling usable items locally, regionally and internationally. Reselling and reusing materials and equipment “as is” helps our community and the environment. Our diverse clientele includes inventors, artisans, do-it-yourselfers, the general public and businesses of varying sizes.

Biggest Issue Facing Albany: Support of businesses by the local community is essential for each to thrive and grow. A healthy business environment provides resources in the form of jobs and products. This enables businesses and individuals to enhance the community through contributions of time, talents and financial commitments.

Chamber Involvement: Burcham’s Metals has been a Chamber Member for 22 years. I have attended forum lunches, Business After Hours and participated in Business Extravaganzas.
