As your new incoming Board Chair, I am honored for this unique opportunity to work with all of our Chamber members, the Board of Directors, and our Chamber staff to promote the mission of the Chamber and serve our business community.

By way of introduction, I was born in Albany and raised on a farm in Lebanon. I have practiced law since September of 1978 with Weatherford Thompson Cowgill Black & Schultz, P.C., Albany’s oldest law fi rm which was established by my great-great grandfather, J.K. Weatherford, in 1875. We are celebrating our 140th year of serving Albany and the surrounding community.

I want to congratulate Stacy Koos, our outgoing Board Chair, for her hard work and strong leadership over the past year. Stacy has served as a mentor for me and the other members of the Chamber executive team. She lead by example and was always very well organized and prepared.

We have established several goals for the upcoming year. First, we want to build our membership. I have challenged our Board and requested each Board member to recruit at least two new members for the upcoming year. If you know of a candidate for membership, please contact the Chamber offi ce.

Second, we want to continue to develop the Workforce Development “Pipeline” program. The upcoming year will be a critical year in this collaborative effort to develop and implement the “Pipeline” program.

Third, we want to do our best to advocate for your best interests in the political arena. The Governmental Affairs Committee will continue to be active and committed to working on behalf of our members.

Fourth, we will continue with all of our regular programs and events, including Leadership Albany, Business After Hours and our annual ATI sponsored golf tournament. We have a

variety of activities and other events for our Chamber members to network throughout the year.

We are in the process of scheduling our speakers for the upcoming Forum Luncheons. There will be a diverse group of speakers who will enlighten us by their presentations. Please note that the kick-off Forum Luncheon is scheduled for September 23, 2015 at 11:30 a.m. at the Linn County Fair & Expo Center. The Business Extravaganza will follow the Forum Luncheon. Each month I will present one historical trivia question and solicit answers which may be emailed to the following email address at the Chamber: [email protected]. At the Forum Luncheon held in June, 2016, I will draw from a hat one name from all persons who have successfully answered each trivia question from July 2015 through May 2016. The winner will receive $100 in Chamber dollars. The fi rst question is set forth below:

What former Grand Marshal of the Albany Veterans Day Parade is known for the following quote: “Government’s view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.”

Thank you for allowing me to serve as your Board Chair. I look forward to working with you and serving the mission of the Chamber.

THE BEGINNING OF A NEW YEAR

Very truly yours,Mike CowgillWeatherford Thompson et al2015-2016 Board Chair

“We have been a member of the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce for many years . The Business A f t e r H o u r s e v e n t s provide us with excellent opportunities to connect with area businesses. The Chamber has helped us stay connected in the city along with giving a voice on issues in Albany. We have made contacts (and friends) that have ultimately led us to grow our business. Thank you for all you do for our business community!”

“I enjoy attending Business After Hours because it’s a more informal setting, people talk more casually and you get to know them better. I am a fi rm believer in relationships. I want to know the people I do business with and their needs. In this way I can help them best when it comes to marketing their business.”

“I try to attend every Business After Hours. I really enjoy seeing clients away from the office in a more fun, casual atmosphere. Gives me a chance to connect with them on another level. When we’re at work, the phone is ringing, employees or customers interrupt, Business After Hours is more relaxed, you talk more person to person rather than client to salesperson. Also, Business After Hours is a great place to meet people from new businesses in town. I have actually, met several of my clients at a Business After Hours event. Plus, I get a chance to learn more about local businesses, meet their employees and see how they operate.”

“ I a t t e n d t h e A l b a n y Chamber Business After Hours because it is a great and relaxed environment, helping me to meet and get to know other chamber members. In the past 2 years that I have been involved, I have made lasting, lifelong friendships and excellent business relat ionships through the Albany Chamber Events. I have seen my business grow as a result, but the part I appreciate the most is the friendships. It has also given me information on the area businesses and helps me to know the people I am working with and businesses that I can refer!”

Oregon’s first Best Western Premier property, Boulder Falls Inn, opened last month on the Samaritan Health Sciences Campus in Lebanon.

The 84-room Boulder Falls Inn is adjacent to the Conference Center that opened last year and features views onto the large Japanese-inspired garden and pond.

The property also features a restaurant, called 1847 Bar and Grill, named for the year the city of Lebanon was founded. Construction will soon begin on an outdoor pool, which can also be accessed by members of the adjacent SamFit fi tness facility.
