Shriners International - PAGE 3January/February 2018

Our children, parents and hospital office would like to extend our sincere thank you to everyone for their generosity in their donations, gifts and effort that was put forth for the Shrine Patient Christmas Party. We had over 260 patients and family members attend. The collection of toys by units, clubs, Junior High students, athletic groups and members of the masonic youth groups was truly overwhelming. Everyone who joined us commented on how much fun they had with all the Shriners support.

I want to express my sincere thank you to everyone who assisted Eneida, Tom and Jane in coordinating the Outreach Clinics in 2017. There is a tremendous amount of work that goes into making these clinics run smoothly. Eneida starts preparing records, schedules, equipment and lunch count, 2 or 3 days prior, while Jane coordinates with the Shrine volunteer staff. All the necessary equipment needs to be loaded on Thursday, and final arrangements made with the

hospitals. The day of the clinic, staff needs to start set up at 7:00 AM, and it involves a lot of physical effort. After each clinic, we need to break down and reset the area for Maricopa Medical Center and then return all the supplies back to the Temple. We really could use a couple people before the clinic and then afterwards for breakdown. You can volunteer for either AM or PM shifts. For those volunteers unable to do an entire day, we welcome you for a few hours. We are humbly grateful for any assistance you may be able to give us with making these Outreach Clinics efficient and enjoyable for our children.

We begin 2018 with 6 Outreach Clinics and here are the dates. Please add into your calendars: 2/2/18, 2/16/18, 5/4/18, 8/3/18, 8/10/18 and 11/9/18.

Please call #602-231-0188, in the hospital office to join us!

Currently, we are being asked to coordinate any, and all, requests for a Shrine Patient Ambassador, through the hospital office and the actual hospitals themselves. This really is no different than what has been done in the past. It is an effort to control and limit the effect these requests may have on the child. Please remember that our patients have family, school and medical obligations, and we do not want to overtax them. Please call the Eneida and discuss your requests so that we may coordinate this with the family and hospital.

It is my honor and pleasure to serve you the nobility and our patients. Please feel free to contact me anytime should you need any information or assistance.

Oriental BandOriental Band ScribeHi Nobles,Just a few lines to bring you

up to date on our Oriental Band’s activities these past few months: We participated in the Lake Havasu Parade and the Ceremonial in Lake Havasu, the Veteran’s Day Parade in Anthem and in Tempe during the November salute to our veterans, attended the Super O.V. with the Shrine Potentate for 2017, Noble Randy Peters, were in the Glendale annual Christmas parade on December 9th , and had a Christmas party on December 19th with the Drum & Bugle Corp. where we played Christmas music.

We are looking forward to next year, 2018.

party was a blast. Great food, wonderful comradeship and a heck of a lot of fun. Lorie Ross was a fantastic hostess for the annual event. What would we do without her (or any of the Ladies of the Patrol).

We’re looking forward to some special upcoming events: The Yuma Silver Spur Rodeo Parade and the Apache Junction Lost Dutchman Parade after which we will have our annual carport sale at the home of Fred & Lil Rogers. Visit with us after the parade. We’re sure there will be something there for you that you just can’t live without and the purchase price will be very reasonable. The Patrol has been diligently collecting all kinds of furniture, appliances, housewares etc. for the cause. If anyone has something they would like to donate, please give us a call. Bring it to the Shrine or we can come get it.

The Patrol is always looking for new members to join our ranks. Ask any Patrolman for a petition. We try to have our Ladies involved as much as possible.

Culinary UnitKen Conner, Scribe until relievedGreetings from behind the line.

I hope the holidays brought you all you ever wished for and sorry if they didn’t. At the Culinary Unit we had our Christmas Party at Lenny’s Country Club with a brunch for all members. Even Hal and his lady were there to celebrate Hanukkah. We are an equal opportunity unit, and all come from the same place, just not sure where that might be.

Not much scheduled in the future. Just our usual serving at Unit head and Stated meetings. It is my understanding the CIF BBQ is off the schedule. So not doing that in the next few months. A chance to keep my apron clean a little longer. Maybe if the powers that be, would Share the numbers from past CIF BBQ’s we might still be standing outside and prepping the meat to throw in the pit and taking it out the next morning and serving it in the auditorium. But such is life, we will endeavor to persevere and go on with our lives. That just leaves the Cornfest to look forward to at the end of August. We will be there if it is, serving corn and dribbling beans as usual!

We have not had a unit meeting since coming back from our Summer break. Not even sure who our officers are but am assuming we are all holding our old places. The only change maybe in the Secretary position, I should be so lucky! We can’t find anyone else to write this article with out getting paid. Just putting in my time!

Remember to stand back as we serve you, don’t need any suits from burning beans or gravy. We are carefully trained personnel and think we know what we are doing. Well most of us think we know that. Not real sure about Jimmy though, that’s why we keep him on the salad. It’s hard to burn someone with cold lettuce.

If you are bored come to our unit meeting, the third Tuesday of the month if it fits in Lenny’s schedule. We intend to eat between 5 and 6 in the Red Fez and meet there after. We are glad Woodrow decided to come back to AZ. It will liven things up.

Greeters UnitEllis (Nick) Nichols,

TreasurerThe Greeters have elected

Dennis Keith, President, Darren Reale as Secretary, and Nick Nichols as Treasurer.

Nothing beats success like success. As we began planning our fourth annual Crab Feed it became evident we were running out of hands to carry the load. We made contact with some Nobles in the Temple Guard who thought joining forces might not be a bad idea. With a little negotiation

we are now sponsoring the Greeters and Temple Guard annual Crab Feed & Auction.

The fourth annual Crab Feed and Auction is scheduled for Friday, January 26. Toxic algae bloom continues to plaguethe California and southern Oregon coast. Our supplier in Astoria has assured us notto worry but expect slight price increase inlive weight. The dungeness season shouldbe just fine. Tickets this year remain at$35 per person and will be available fromany Greeter and Temple Guard member orthrough our online Store at el-zaribah.org

Like the Marines, we’re always looking for a few good men. We meet the third Monday of each month at the El Zaribah Shrine Center. Join us around 5:30 PM for libations and dinner.

Motorcycle UnitBob HicklinHow did it happen so fast,

summer was over, fall was here but we hardly recognized it and then the holidays and the year is over? Maybe it’s because when you are riding a motorcycle both you and time fly, or so it seems.

Well we did all of the activities and events that I talked about last time. Havasu stands out because of the large group and the great time that was had by all who made the ride. On the same weekend Desert Winds, the Harley Davidson dealer in Mesa had an all-day fund-raising event for the Shrine. Those of us who stayed in town worked this event and I am happy to say that our efforts paid off. The event raised over $5,000 and from all indications we will be doing it every year so hats off to Desert Winds HD and all of the motorcycle unit members who spent the day working there.

The unit drill team and other members of the motorcycle unit enjoy a parade and this is a great time of the year because we have so many to participate in.

A special event was the 9th annual Toys for Tots Holiday Celebration held at Stapley Junior High in Mesa. Our own past President and current High Priest and Prophet Dana Dobson is the host for this event. Motorcycles, mini-cars, Road Runners and scooters roar onto the campus to entertain the kids who have been collecting toys to distribute for the holidays.

So that’s it for the year we are looking forward to the unit Christmas party our New Year’s Day ride and welcome to 2018.

will be held at Apache Wells Country Club on the 20th. The oasis starts at 5 PM and dinner at 6 PM. We will have a great dinner and dance music till 10 PM. Hope to see all club Nobles there to welcome the Potentate, the Divan, and the new officers to their offices

As a heads-up, the February club meeting and luncheon will be on 8th in the Country Club. The annual Spring Golf Tournament will be on February 25th with a 1PM shotgun start. It is for all golfers, not just Shriners. Come on out and play. A Salmon feed will be held at the Gazebo and Navaho room on the 22nd. The net proceeds for both of these events goes to help transport children and family members to the Shriners Hospitals for Children®.

Thank You Greeters,

With 2017 ending, I would like to extend a sincere thank you to all my fellow Greeters, as well as the entire nobility of El Zaribah Shrine, for the support they have given to our unit and me throughout the year. It has been an honor and privilege to serve in this capacity. As we move forward into 2018, I look forward to helping grow membership in both our fraternity and individual clubs.

Sincerely,Ted BrownellGreeters President 2017

Every day, hundreds of young children with burn injuries are taken to emergency rooms. They were not even near a flame. The children are victims of scalds.

How Scalds Happen Most scalds occur in residences. Scald burns are typically related to ordinary activities – bathing, cooking and eating – and often happen to children because of a lapse in adult supervision or a lack of protective measures. Youngsters may not understand or even be aware of potential dangers of hot liquids (especially water) and foods; they simply trust adults to keep them safe.

In addition, young children have thinner skin that burns more quickly than adults’. People of all ages can be burned in 30 seconds by a flowing liquid that is 130° F; at 140° F, it takes only 5 seconds; at 160° F, it only takes 1 second. For children under 5, these temperatures can cause a burn in half the time.

Quick Facts about Scald Injuries• Every day, hundreds of young children with scald

burns are taken to emergency rooms.

• Scalds or other contact burns are the cause of the majority of burn injuries sustained by children age 5 and younger.

• Children under 4 years of age and people with disabilities are at high risk of burn-related death and injury, especially from scald and contact burns.

(Source: Safe Kids USA)

Preventing ScaldsContinuous supervision of young children is the most important factor in preventing tap-water scald burns, but there are additional simple preventive measures that can be taken, including:

• Lower the temperature settings on water heaters to 120° F (49° C) or less.

• When filling the bathtub, turn on cold water first. Mix in warmer water carefully.

• Check the water temperature by rapidly moving your hand through the water. If the water feels hot to an adult, it is too hot for a child.

• When placing a child in the tub face them away from faucets and as close to the other end of the tub as possible.

Scalds also occur in the kitchen and dining room. Many of these can be prevented by:

• Always supervising children in the kitchen and dining areas.

• Keeping pot handles turned inward; use oven mitts or pot holders. Keeping clothing from coming into contact with flames or heating elements.

• Keeping children away from everything that is hot.

• Following instructions and cautions for heating items in a microwave oven.

• Not using deep fryers with children present.

In the U.S., electrical burns and injuries from lightning result in thousands of admissions to specialized burn units annually. In addition, electrical fires in residences cause more than 45,000 fires annually.

Remembering a few basic safety tips can help keep you and your children safe.

In Your Home, Especially if Young Children are Present:

• Place covers on all electrical outlets.

• Unplug all electrical items within a child’s reach.

• Do not allow toys that must be plugged into an outlet.

• Teach our children to never touch electrical outlets or play with electrical cords.

In Your Home, for Everyone’s Safety:• Use extreme caution when using electrical appliances

near water.

• Do not overload electrical outlets.

• Replace electrical items that show signs of wear, such as frayed wires.

• Keep your clothes dryer free of lint accumulation to avoid it becoming a fire hazard.

• If you are in or standing in water, do not touch anything electrical.

• Do not use extension cords to plug in appliances,

• Plug items in appropriately (do not force a three-prong plug into a two-prong plug outlet).

• Use certified surge protectors and power strips.

• Keep clothes, curtains, and other flammable itemsaway from heat sources.

• Use correct wattage light bulbs.

And Outside, Remember to:• Come indoors and remain there during an electrical

storm (one with lightning strikes).

• Never play near electrical wires

• Stay away from areas marked DANGER: HIGH VOLTAGE.

• Never climb utility poles, transmission towers, etc.

• Do not climb trees that are near power lines.

• Do not throw anything at utility poles or wires.

• Only fly kites in dry weather and in open spaces. If your kite does get caught in an electrical wire, call the electric company for help.

Contact a Qualified Electrician:• If you have recurring instances of blown fuses or

tripping circuit breakers.

• If you experience a tingling feeling when touching an electrical tool or appliance.

• If your outlet switches are warm or discolored.

• If there is a burning or rubber-like smell coming from an appliance.

• If you have flickering lights.

• If there are sparks coming from an outlet.

• If wall outlets are cracked or broken.

Approximately 85 percent of fire-related deaths occur in homes. And every year, hundreds of children under age 10 die in home fires.

Fires and burns are a leading cause of deaths that occur in the home, and a leading cause of injury-related fatalities among children. Many of these incidents could be prevented by following some prevention tips and precautions.

• Use fireplace screens and have the chimney cleaned annually.

• Kerosene heaters should only be used when approved by authorities. Do not use gasoline or camp-stove fuel. Refuel outside and only when the unit is cool.

Be Prepared for a Fire:

Fires occur quickly. In less than 30 seconds a single flame can become a fire. In two minutes, it can become life-threatening; in five minutes a residence can be destroyed. To protect yourself and your family, be prepared:

• Have an escape plan, and practice it with the children. Learn two ways out of every room, and agree on a meeting place outside the building.

• If you live in a multi-floor building, know the best route to the stairwell and emergency exits.

• If you are in a room with a closed door when fire occurs, take these extra precautions:

¡ Do not open the door if you see smoke under it.

¡ If you don’t see smoke, check the door handle. If it is hot, do not open the door.

¡ If you can open the door, and there is no smoke or heat, proceed quickly to your exit.

¡ Stay low to the ground as you exit.

¡ If you can’t get out right away, yell for help or call 911 if you have a phone. Do not hide in a closet or under a bed.

To Help Prevent Fires:

• Follow safe cooking practices: Never leave food that is cooking

unattended; supervise children’s useof the stove, oven or microwave.

• Install and maintain smoke alarms on every floor of the home and near every bedroom. Test

them monthly.

• Teach children that fire is not a toy, and can be dangerous.

• Keep matches and lighters locked up and away from children.

• Keep electrical cords from being trapped against walls.

• Do not overload electrical circuits or extension cords.

• Do not place electrical cords or wires under rugs, over nails or in high-traffic areas.

• Shut off and unplug appliances that sputter, spark or smell. Have them checked and repaired, or replaced.

• Be careful when using portable heaters. Be sure bedding, clothing and other combustible items are at least 3 feet from space heaters.

• Replace mattresses made prior to 2007, when flammability standards were implemented.

Thousands of children sustain burn injuries in their homes every year. Many of these injuries could have been prevented. Here are some safey tips to help keep your children - and you - safe at home:

Safety All Through the Home:• Use electrical outlet covers.• Unplug electrical appliances when not in use.• Install an appropriate number of smoke

detectors - one near each bedroom, one at thetop of each stairway and one near the planned escape route.

• Teach your children that matches are a tool, and nota toy. Keep matches out of reach of youngerchildren, and allow older children to use them only when supervised.

• Store all flammable liquids properly.• Store all chemicals and cleaners out of reach of

children, or lock the cabinet.• Have the electrical wiring in your house checked

professionally every 10 years.• Have the fireplace and chimney inspected every year

before the cold weather season.• Replace damaged electrical cords.• Do not leave lighted candles unattended.• Gasoline has only one purpose: to fuel an engine.

Safety in the Kitchen and Dining Area:• Always supervise children in the kitchen and

dining area.• Keep children away from everything that is hot.• If young children are in the home, use placemats

rather than tablecloths.• Keep all hot items and anything electrical out of reach

of children and away from edges of tablesand counters.

• Establish a kid-free zone, where young children can be watched but are safely out of the kitchen while cooking is being done.

• Do not use deep-fryers with children present.• Keep pot handles turned inward; use oven mitts or

pot holders. Keep clothing from coming into contact with flames or heating elements.

• Store all chemicals and cleaners out of reach of children, or lock the cabinet.

• Follow instructions and cautions for heating items in a microwave oven.

• Avoid area rugs in the kitchen.• Do not handle hot items while holding young children.

Safety in the Bathroom:• Have a latch-bolt on the outside of the bathroom

door so young children cannot enter thebathroom unsupervised.

• Always supervise children in the bath.• The water in a child’s bath should not exceed 104° F.

Set your water heater no higher than 120° F.• Run cold water in the tub first, and then add

warmer water.• Before placing a child in the tub, test the water

temperature by moving your hand through the water.• If the water feels hot, it is too hot for a child.• When placing a child in the bathtub, face them away

from the faucets and as close to the other end of the tub as possible.

• If you let your children play with toys while in the bathtub, do not leave them unattended.

• Consider not permitting toys in the bathtub.

Safety Planning in Case a Fire Does Occur:• Have an escape plan, including two exits from each

room, in place.• Practice using the plan.• Have a designated meeting place at a safe distance

from the home.• Call 911 in the case of an emergency.
