A POST LOURDES REFLECTION…… At the end of May a small group of us from St. Mary’s journeyed
to Lourdes in France for a short five day pilgrimage. In the early
days of my priesthood I used to travel there very frequently but it
had been six years since my last visit. Not a lot has changed in
Lourdes, there is still the tacky plastic commercialisation of the
place with a thousand shops selling everything from plastic
statues to pricey gold medals. The hotels have certainly improved
and offer a good standard of accommodation for the in excess of
five million people who throng there each year, pilgrims have to
be fed and have a decent place to stay. Once you step through the
gates of the sanctuary area the tackiness is left behind and the plastic Jesus yields to the real thing.
The magic of the place is somehow exemplified in the torchlight procession which takes place every
evening from the Grotto area and proceeds around the demesne finishing up in front of the Rosary
Basilica. Here many thousands of visitors from all parts of the world walk in solidarity carry a candle
of faith and praying the rosary as the procession winds its way to Rosary Square. To hear the Lourdes
Ave sung by many thousands is a wonderful experience and gives a great realisation of the unifying
nature of the universal church. There are always hundreds of wheelchairs pushed in the procession
and the special chariot chairs from the Hospital in Lourdes where sick pilgrims are accommodated; in
Lourdes the sick are the VIP’s, the whole place is geared towards their ease of access and primacy of
place.
Seeing so many sick in one place, and some seriously so, is a sobering sight and certainly makes you
feel that you have no right to grumble. These sick people are cared for by an army of volunteers who
accompany the pilgrimages, many of whom are young people – it’s a lovely thing to witness.
In the afternoon the great underground Basilica of St. Pius X fills for the Blessed Sacrament
procession, it is here that the sick are blessed in a special way, and it is here that many have found
healing. There have been 63 medically attested miracles since the apparitions of Our Lady in 1858,
but for some years now the medical bureau that examined such miraculous cures has been closed
down, since no more proof is needed. Apart from the physical healings many people have
experienced great spiritual and mental healing in Lourdes and people wavering in the faith have had a
shot in the arm, so to speak. It is a place of prayer where I always have a great sense of the Lord’s
presence.
You can make an electronic visit to the grotto at Lourdes through the live 24 hour webcam
https://youtu.be/dWVHAntN6k4 and now that Ryanair are flying there with scheduled flights a few
days needn’t cost a fortune. It’s a great trip!

St Patrick’s One World Project
Our project supports Lusungu in Malawi under
the auspices of Wells for Zoe.
We recently received a letter from Lusungu, the
young woman we are sponsoring through third
level college in her native country of Malawi.
The following is her letter:
“When I was selected to come to college, I
had a fear that I might not attend it because
I come from a family which is less privileged
and I understood when they told me they could not afford it because college needs are
expensive, they are indeed right because it
really required much money for transport, food, accommodation, clothes, stationery
and of course, fees which make a place in
college beyond the reach of most girls in Malawi.
Then this fear disappeared when Wells for Zoe come in and offered to help me. I want
to say thank you very much to everyone in St
Patrick’s Parish who are supporting me through Wells for Zoe.
My life really changed from the help you are
giving me. I’m not missing classes simply
because I am always healthy by taking food
which you provide for me. I’m also grateful
to you because I submit my assignments on
time using the money you are giving me, which I use for printing out my assignments.
Without your help I would have had to
withdraw from the college because apart
from you there was no else to offer me that kind of help. So for that thank you very
much.
Thank you to John and Mary for connecting
me with St Patrick’s Parish, Esker, Dodsboro, Adamstown. I really appreciate
it.
May you all remain blessed”.
Lusungu sent us her college results obtained
during her first year. They are very impressive
and she is obviously studying very diligently.
Thank you to our parishioners who are
supporting St. Patrick’s One World Project.

Happy Birthday Marie.
From your loving son Kealan, family and friends
Miss Me But Let Me Go When I come to the end of the road And the sun has set for me
I want no rites in a gloom filled room
Why cry for a soul set free?
Miss me a little but not too long
And not with your head bowed low
Remember the love that we once shared
Miss me but let me go
For this is a journey we all must take
And each must go alone
It’s all a part of the Master’s plan
A step on the road to home When you are lonely and sick of heart
Go to the friends we know
And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds
Miss me, but let me go.

Baptism Candles Available from St. Mary’s Parish Centre

The work continues in our
shed and we can see
definite improvements,
especially in the upper floor
where we will have our
kitchen and café / sit-down
space. Next week we expect
to take delivery of our new kitchen, if there is a
kitchen fitter or ex-fitter who is available to assist us we would greatly appreciate his/her
time. Just call us. Our ground floor will be a
proper workshop with power tools & equipment
but we need serious funding to purchase the
expensive power tools for this. We are still
looking for assistance from anybody with hands-
on experience of laying out/setting up a
workshop and we continue to urge people who
may have power tools or hardwoods they no
longer use to consider gifting these to us -we will
make good use of any such donation.
The IWA staff have been very helpful and
welcoming to us over the past 8 months, none
more so than John Conroy, an ardent shed
supporter. Sadly, John passed away very
suddenly last Saturday; we will miss him and we
extend our condolences to his wife & family.
Our next open, general meeting is on Monday
08th July; 18.30 to 19.50 in Lucan Library, in the
Supervalu shopping centre. These meetings
allow the committee deliver updates on the progress of key projects and they also give all
attendees an opportunity to voice their opinions
and/or bring forward suggestions. Member or
not, if you have an idea or suggestion you'd like
to voice, come along and share it with us.

Esker Retirement Association Hi All,
Well, we arrived back last Fri evening after
another fantastic trip away with our group. The
scenery in the Lake District is just outstanding
and the advantage of being on a coach is that you
get such a good view of the whole countryside
around you. The cruise on Lake Windermere
was lovely as the sun was shining; we visited Grasmere, home of William Wordsworth and
visited his grave; we went to Lakelands Museum
where we saw a replica of Donald Campbell’s
bluebird and several classic cars.
The little villages and towns we visited were so
pretty such as Keswick and especially
Hawkshead, and we were blessed with good
weather most of the trip. Our hotel was very
good, staff were so pleasant and helpful and the
food was really good. Great to be looked after
for a week!! As usual our lot love the nightlife; singing and dancing the night away and the craic
was really really good.
One of the highlights for us was going to the
famous Blackpool Ballroom where our own
ballroom dancers, Vincent and Maureen, took to
the floor amid the professional dancers and they
did a fantastic job. Some of us even got to dance
with a professional dancer which made the
ballroom experience even more memorable for
us.
Then today we were back to our club for our
keep-fit class, bowling, scrabble and whist.
Next Wednesday 26th June, we are having our
AGM so please all members try to be present for
that. We are also having our end of year party on
the same day then we close our club till Wed 11th
September 2019.

Raffle on the Night
IPB Pride of Place Competition We hosted an enjoyable day on Wednesday with
the IPB Pride of Place Judges who arrived at
2pm in Lucan and stayed with us until 5:30pm.
This is a prestigious all Ireland competition and a
wonderful opportunity to showcase our
community.
Representatives from community groups across Lucan setup their stands, put up their posters,
flyers and handouts, wore their colours,
Comhaltas performed traditional music as the
Judges arrived, and we had various banners setup
at the entrance to the Presbyterian Church to
welcome the judges. The presentation and video
delivered a comprehensive and passionate
commentary on the brilliant people and groups
we have in Lucan and the great work we do
every day. We all learned a great deal about each
other. The groups had an opportunity to speak in
greater detail to the judges about the great work they do in the community. The judges had an
opportunity to visit Lucan House and Demesne,
the Weir, the medieval graveyard and the village
park. We all adjourned to Kenny's for
tea/coffee/finger food and music performed by
Comhaltas. The judges told us they very much
enjoyed the day, loved meeting our people, and
spending time with us hearing your wonderful
stories.
Judging commenced in June where the Judges
visit the four corners of Ireland and concludes end of August. The judges will then make their
determinations and we will be informed of the
result towards end of September / early October.
A Gala Dinner & Awards Ceremony takes place
in Lyrath Estate Hotel, Kilkenny on 30th
November 2019. Good luck us!
Thank You
Thank you to the organisations who participated,
told us passionate stories about their group,
provided pictures and video of their work, and
who turned out in great numbers to welcome the Judges. This competition is all about recognising
community spirit, volunteers and the great work
we do every day in our community. Your
contribution made the day and there is no doubt
Lucan rose to the occasion and put it's best foot
forward. Congratulations.

Where is Summer?
Summer Soltice come and
gone by the time most people
read this week’s copy. I
wonder if we’ve ever had so
wet a June!
Dubs are putting a shine on
things at any rate! Our Man of the Match in last week’s thriller v Galway was Lucan Hurler, and
Dublin Captain Chris Crummey – You’ve made
it when you’re on Anthony Daly’s radar!
Chris signing autographs for young fans.
Dublin Camogie girls did the business as well
last weekend, with some Lucan ladies involved.
We’ll be watching the big ball game v Meath this
weekend, and watch out for Lucan’s Darren
Gavin! Up the Dubs
Out of sight, out of mind! An Maidrín Rua seo
was visiting Sarsfield Park early on Monday
morning last – it would seem there are quite a lot
of foxes all over the area, but they keep it quiet!!!
Traffic problems on the old Leixlip Road
opposite Maxol this week, after a section of
Lucan Demesne wall collapsed on Sunday
morning.
A good section of the footpath is gone also. Thankfully no one was injured.
In the meantime, a stop/go system is in place and
will probably be active until after repairs are
carried out.
Ladies! Be very careful in car
parks when loading your
shopping! We heard of a nasty
incident in a local car park this past
week – a lady placing her shopping
in the boot of her car noticed a fellow running fast close by, and jumping into a waiting car.
Then she realised that her handbag was gone
from the front seat of her car. Within 20 minutes
her bank card had been used!
Well done to SDCC for the ongoing work at
Esker Cemetery. We complained when the grass
wasn’t being cut, so we must compliment them
when they do the job.
St. Finian’s Ruins – it was very disheartening to
learn of new graffiti on these old walls, with all the effort that is being made to conserve this site.
Shame on the culprits!

Upgrade of N4/Kennelsfort Road Junction:
I continue to call for the urgent need for the NTA
and Transport Minister to begin liaising in order
to provide a grade separated upgrade at the N4 /
Kennelsfort Road intersection. This Junction is
the cause of long delays for commuters on the
N4. In light of the significant Capital
Expenditure that is available for the Lucan to
City Centre Core Bus Corridor, as part of Dublin Bus Connects Project, it makes complete sense
that the NTA, Transport Department and SDCC
would come together and liaise on this issue at
this time.
Back to School: The Back to School Clothing
and Footwear allowance has increased by €25
per child for the school year 2019/2020.
Applications for the allowance are open on June
24th and I am calling on families to check if they
are eligible for this payment at www.welfare.ie.

Pride of Place Awards: I was delighted to
attend the judging for the Pride of Place awards which Lucan was nominated for by South Dublin
County Council. I want to congratulate all
involved in showcasing the many wonderful
organisations doing fantastic work around Lucan
every day.
Access to Dispensary Lane Health Centre:
I have asked SDCC to finish the dishing of the
ramp from Main Street to Dispensary Lane to
allow easy access to the health centre for persons
with mobility issues. I have also asked that the
double yellow lines there be extended to ensure
vehicles do not block the ramp by parking there.
Frances Fitzgerald MEP, Fine Gael It has been an honour to serve as your local
TD! I want to thank local residents and
organisations for the generous support which
they have shown me during the last twelve years
as an Oireachtas representative for the area. I am
honoured to have been elected to the European
Parliament to represent the needs of 1.4 million people that call our county and city of Dublin
‘home.’
I hope that you will continue to stay in touch
with me as I begin my term as MEP for Dublin.
If there is anything that I can do to be of
assistance to your, your neighbours, your friends
or your family, please do not hesitate to contact
me directly at my new email address:
I look forward to continuing my work for you
and the entire Lucan community. Thank you again – from the bottom of my heart.

National Childcare Scheme: This week I hosted
a briefing with SPARK and Focus to inform of
the impact the National Childcare Scheme will
have on low income families. This scheme to be
introduced in October will negatively affect
those who most need child care, and will have
devastating consequences for Community child care. Parents currently availing of CCS will end
up paying almost 400 euros more under the new
subsidy scheme. Parents using childcare through
CETs and CCS will lose out with the new
scheme. I am asking Minister Zappone to act
immediately to ensure low income families can
pay for childcare. If you have any concerns with
National Childcare Scheme do not hesitate to
contact me.
Transport Users Lucan will have another 20,000 car owners over the next decade due to the huge house building
program in this area, with almost a similar
amount coming in through Lucan from further
out during this time. Measures must begin now
to address this major traffic influx to avoid total
grid lock. There are two combined solutions to
this problem.
1. A New Service Road.
2. Public Transport which I will explain next
week. The service Road SR51 will run from N7
Rathcoole to M1 via Adamstown, Leixlip and Blanchardstown. In orbital form like the M50 but
through Land Use Corridor that has the potential
for up to 250, 000 jobs and activities. New
business would set up here, many existing city
business would move part or all to this location.
Many Industrial Estates could also move out to
this corridor and be replaced by housing.
Thousands of motorists from the countryside
would come as far as this corridor to work and
return when finished, reducing congestion further
in. This service road would also divert many
thousands of cars around Dublin to allow the Lucan area to deal with this additional traffic
growth. T. Newton 086 3127364

A super midweek win for our Senior footballers,
keeps them very much on contention for league
semi-final spot. Inter Ladies unfortunately
suffered their first defeat in the Cup competition.
The Jnr A hurlers lost out on Tuesday night away
to Ballyboden. What a weekend last weekend for
Dublin Hurling, a wonderful victory in Parnell Park, and our own Chris Crummey to the fore. A
great leader and great ambassador for the club as
well. Dublin Senior Camogie team also opened
the Championship season with a win, and great
to see the Lucan girls playing at after time and
the Lucan ladies on the Dublin Squad were
delighted to chat to them after. We also had our
newest Leinster Champion with Aoibheann
Stokes winning the Leinster Regional Féile Skills
competition. There was some disappointment
with the Dublin minor hurlers unfortunately
losing out to Wexford, they battled bravely until the end but it wasn’t to be, but well done to
Charlie Keher, Colm Walsh and Evin Dowling
who represented the club so well. We also had
Cian Canavan part of the Dublin Plunkett team
that beat Kilkenny in the Qtr Final of the Celtic
Challenge, and well done also 3 Lucan girls Leah
O’Byrne, Siobhan Bernie and Rebecca McGrath
who were with the Dublin ladies football u13
development squad in Portlaoise. Senior hurlers
lost out to Kilmacud Crokes in league, Jnr B
hurlers are flying high at the top of league and Championship after two big wins the week
before last. Best of Luck to Darren Gavin as he
prepares for the Leinster football final this
weekend.
Our condolences to the Fleming family on the
recent passing Dr. Garry. RIP.

Lucan U11 Camogie and Ladies Football
They left a misty Lucan on Saturday morning
and headed to the sunny south east. Lucan U11
camogie and Ladies Football was greatly welcome to Marshalstown Castledockrell GAA
on Saturday morning for both camogie and
football games. We played one team from.
Marshalstown while Duffry Rovers played
their 2 teams and then they played 2 football
games against Baile Dubh Tire after which we
had some light refreshments in the clubhouse. In
all 80 girls took part and it was an enjoyable
afternoon. The camogie and football matches
were end to end drama, great skills on show and
fantastic team work displayed. After the matches we headed to pirates cove, in Courtown for
further fun and team bonding. Great memories
were made and a return visit has been promised
by our Wexford friends.
Report from U10 Camogie HT game
A group of girls from our Under 10 Camogie
team had the honour of playing in the half time
mini game on Saturday at the Dublin Senior
Camogie’s All Ireland Championship Match v
Meath. The girls were great ambassadors for the
club, and put in a great performance against O’Dwyers with some great skills on display.
Afterwards the girls were delighted to get the
chance to pose for a photo and a chat with Ali
Twomey, Orla Beagan and Emma Flanagan who
are fantastic role models for our juvenile players
in the club, and the U10 girls are looking forward
to welcoming them to one of our training
sessions over the coming weeks.

Repercussions of Local Elections I would like to thank the Councillors who
worked extremely hard in the community but
failed to be re-elected. The job can be both
challenging and fulfilling and often extends far
beyond the regular working hours. For some it
also carries an emotional weight and the reality is
some hard decisions have to be made. In view of
that, I think that the circulation of an email prior to the election, informing the recipients of the
names of the counsellors who had voted in
favour of a housing project, appears to have
achieved the objective. Hardly fair play. I’m sure
the counsellors named in this email would have
appreciated the opportunity to explain the basis
of their decision and maybe some excellent
Councillors would be back making a positive
contribution in our community. The future is
looking decidedly bleak with talk of carbon tax,
increase in the property tax and charges relating to water usage. It emerged that the parties who
favour these charges were triumphant in the
election which makes it inevitable that the
charges will be implemented.

I am Fine, Thank You
There is nothing the matter with me, I’m as healthy as I can be. I have arthritis in both knees And when I talk, I talk with a wheeze. My pulse is weak and my blood is thin, But I’m awfully well for the shape I’m in. Arch supports I have for my feet, Or I wouldn’t be able to walk in the street. Sleep is deprived me night after night, But every morning I find I’m alright. My memory’s failing, my head’s in a spin, But I’m awfully well for the shape I’m in. The moral of this, as my tale I unfold, That for you and me that are growing old, It’s better to say “I’m fine” with a grin Than to let folks know the shape we are in.
