A Mision to Care Fall 2017 INSIGHTS TO A BRIGHTER VISION Making Progress… on the Road from Murphy to Manteo PCC John Owens, NCL, Inc. BrighterVisions Chair The Brighter Visions campaign for this year has gotten in gear for a good trip as we try to raise funds for our services to blind and visually impaired persons. Going along with President George Suggs’ motto “Serving from Manteo to Murphy,” we are plotting our progress across the state on Highway 64. With the distance of roughly 600 miles, and a goal of $684,500, we can calculate that a mile equals about $1,141. As of September 11, we have raised $127,516 which means that we have travelled 111 miles. If you look at the map, you can see that we have left Manteo, crossed the Alligator River, zipped through Columbia and Plymouth, by-passed Williamston and have almost reached Tarboro. That’s a good trip so far. Each of the districts has had a very successful Kick Off with good attendance and enthusiasm. President George, Lion Wayne Faber, Hillary, Hannah, and I were welcomed at all of them, and we made presentations about how important it is that we reach this year’s goal. At the end of each meeting, we were elated when clubs brought checks as a partial payment of their goals. As we strive to reach our goals, let’s keep in mind that we are impacting the lives of individual human beings, many of whom do not have the advantages that we enjoy. We may never know the brightness and encouragement that we bring to them. What we do for them means the world to them. Our compassion is far reaching and truly does affect the daily lives of many people. Our goal for the next few months is to travel on up the road at least 300 miles by December 31. That would put us up close to Asheboro, covering half of our trip and meeting half of our goal. That would be $342,250, and we can do it. It will take effort, and it means getting the word out to each club, making sure that every Lion is aware of our journey to help persons in need. A Mission to Care 1

A New Vision of the World… Thank You NC Lions

Hi, I’m Nancy McCurtin and I’m going to share with you my story of becoming blind about 13

months ago and my subsequent relationship with the Lions Club. It all began when my

assigned social worker came and brought me a folding cane, which she said was compliments

of the Lions Club. I replied, “Thank you, but who’s the Lions Club?”

I then began attending blind support group meetings in Burgaw, North Carolina. After several

meetings during which they all said “You’ve got to go to Camp Dogwood, it’s wonderful, you’ve

got to go, you’ve got to go!”, I became curious enough and found out it too was sponsored by

the Lion’s Club. Now I really wanted to know more about this Lions Club, so I took a risk and

attended my first Lions Club meeting where I discovered more of the wonderful work they do.

Next I agreed to attend the camp wherein they told me there will be a talent show and I thought

to myself, “I’d really like to do something to express my gratitude to the Lions Club for letting me

attend the camp.” It took awhile, but I was able to compose a poem that hopefully expresses

my gratitude, but also reflects on my journey over the last 13 months. It is entitled, “The Lions’

Roar.”

The Lions’ Roar by Nancy McCurtin

June 16, 2017

The Lions Club. What’s that all about? I’d heard of them, but I never found out. So I went down and asked them, “Just what DO you do? They said, “We can roar like a lion in a zoo!! ROARrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!! And our roar is MIGHTY, for it’s mighty deeds we do!”

We start with vision screening for little kids in school. I do believe fifth grade is the rule? And if those little kids have trouble with their eyes, We help them out with eye glasses, so they can read and be wise. And when those little kids grow up to be college bound, We have a few scholarships laying around.

Also, we gather eye glasses to send here and there. We’re one of the oldest charities, so - we’re everywhere!

Now, some folks are blind, a fact that we regret. For technology hasn’t learned how to do eye transplants, yet. So for them we have canes. They snap and they fold. They have roller tips for rolling down the road.

And that Camp Dogwood, our camp for the blind. We think that everyone who goes there will find it’s a summer vacation! Activities galore! We’ve got boating, and fishing and trips to the store - there’s painting and eating - and eating some MORE!”

So - my blind friends all told me, “It’s fun! You should go! We’ve been many times, so - we should know!” So finally, I said, “OK.” But I was scared. But there was no need, what a great time we shared!

There was just one time I was taken aback. They said, “Let’s have a pajama party!” I said, “WHAT the HECK?!”

So kudos to the Lions, and their mighty deeds - for helping everyone who has visual needs.

I was so impressed that I asked to join up. They said. ”Can you roar like a Lion?” I said, “YUP!!” ROARrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!! GO LIONS!!

My relationship with the Lions Club is just beginning and as I continue this journey I am being

inducted as a full member of the Lions Club in Hampstead, North Carolina. After witnessing all

of their generosity and great works, I look forward to joining in this effort and roaring like a real

Lion.

My hope is that by reading or hearing about my narrative you too will be inspired to support the

Lions Club either through your financial generosity or through volunteering at your local Lions

Club.
