As I write this column, outside temper-atures are starting to drop. Hopefully, yoursales numbers are beginning to rise. Didyou use the quieter summertime to take along look at your business? Did you rec-ognize your weaknesses, and look to cor-rect them? Did you realize your strengths, and look to build upon them? As WarrenBuffett said, “In the business world, therear view mirror is always clearer than thewindshield”.
We, too, at the Pennsylvania and Delaware Cleaners Associ-ation have been busy. This year we have increased our educa-tional programs for our members. “Stain removal and itsimportance in customer relations” seminars were led by JaneZellers and Bob Edwards at several locations across Pennsylva-nia. A “meet and greet” event in Pittsburgh brought people to-gether for a free night of food, drink, and great conversationabout labor issues, pricing, and other related topics.
Did you participate in any of these gatherings? If not, whynot? Isn’t your business worth spending a couple of hours gain-ing an advantage over your competition?
As we look forward to 2018, our efforts to promote the bet-terment of our industry will continue. More seminars are being
planned, with topics that I promise will help you grow yourbusiness.
The largest function that we present will occur next year withmajor positive changes. The Drycleaning and Laundry EXPOwill be moving to the Baltimore, MD, Convention Center inNovember. It is a new venue bringing lots of new ideas, the lat-est in equipment, and the chance to mingle with your fellowprofessionals amongst the beautiful surroundings of the InnerHarbor. Look for more information coming your way as theEXPO gets closer.
If you are a PDCA member, thank you for your support! Wepromise to put forth our greatest efforts to keep you in the bestposition to succeed. If you are not a member, please considerjoining us. For the price of cleaning two pair of pants per week, you will be among the industry elite. You deserve no less!

Winning Stain Removal Seminar
Do you have a quick tip that you use that simplifiesyour work? Share it with your fellow cleaners here…
Need Oversized Guarded Trouser Hangers?Make your own over-sized guarded trouser hangers. I
have a customer who wears size 6XL trousers. Traditionaltrouser hangers are too small. My remedy is to take two18 inch shirt hangers (for strength) and overlap two reg-ular trouser guards (covering all 18 inches) stapling themin the middle. The 6XL trousers can now be placed overthe trouser guards with ample room.
Steve Stevenson, Stevenson’s Cleaners, Altoona

mind your own business
With higher natural gas prices and our industry’s massiveneed for natural gas, the Midwest Drycleaning and Laundry As-sociation has sent us a few tips that may help control con-sumption.
Many people think that if a gas bill goes high there is a prob-lem directly in the flame or in the measuring equipment. Thisis seldom true. Assuming that the boiler is properly tuned, theonly way to save is to run the boiler less.
Tips to use your boiler less:
1. Cut off your boiler and coast the last 10 or 15 minutesfrom the end of production.
2. Check to see that all pipes including joints are insulated.3. Are all traps before the presses clean and functional?4. Make sure all the check valves at the presses are operating
properly.5. Is the make-up tank working correctly? Make sure vent-
ing is correct and condensate is returned.6. Have your boiler serviced on a regular basis.
