One Patient at a Time Healthy Teeth For A Lifetime!

Independence, Ohio — Are you long in the tooth or do you have sensitive teeth? You may have receding gums. In fact, 50 percent of people have some form of gum recession. A painful surgery was the only answer, until now. Out of necessity, one dentist is trying to ease the pain for his patients and millions of others.

No surgery, no sutures, all smiles, that’s what Dr. Thomas Bilski wanted for his pa-tients.

“I just didn’t see why dentistry has to have a procedure that hurts so much,” said Thomas Bilski, DDS; general dentist in Independence, Ohio. So, Dr. Bilski searched for an alternative and found a new technique called, the Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST).

Conventional gum grafting is painful. Dentists cut and remove tissue from the roof of the mouth, and then graft it onto the receded gum. Now, Dr. Bilski provides the new PST procedure that is an almost painless option.

“There’s some recession of the gums that many children and adults suffer with this unattractive and very sensitive problem.

Maria had the procedure.“There’s some sensitivity and I do not like the way my gums look,” Maria told Dr.

Bilski.Dr. Bilski doesn’t cut, but uses a needle to make a small hole above the diseased area.“We loosen up the gum and drape it down to where it’s supposed to be. Then we

reinforce it with some collagen,” Dr. Bilski explained. There are no grafts, no sutures, and no incisions needed with the Pinhole Surgical Technique™. It simply involves the adjustment of the existing tissue.

The pinhole procedure uses a needle, can correct 10 to 14 teeth at once, takes about 20 minutes for up to three teeth, and recovery is less than a day. Traditional surgery requires two incisions, only corrects one to two teeth at a time, takes almost two hours, and there’s a three-week recovery. Joyce was one of the first to have it done.

“It was a miracle, an absolute miracle,” Joyce explains and is happy to tell everyone about her pretty new smile.

It is expected to be a permanent procedure and should not need to be repeated. As for risks, in the past Dr. Bilski says he has not seen any higher risk with the pinhole technique than with traditional methods. The cost is comparable to traditional meth-ods and can range from 500 dollars to 1,800 dollars. Right now, Dr. Bilski is the only dentist doing this procedure, in northeastern and northwestern regions of Ohio and is one of 500 dentists in the world to have been trained and certified by the inventor of this technique, Dr. John Chao of Alhambra, CA.

The benefits of the Pinhole Surgical Technique™ are many:• Less discomfort for the patient after treatment• Faster recovery for the patient than traditional grafting• No need for uncomfortable sutures• No need for scalpels or invasive surgical tools• No need to take donor tissue from the patient’s palate• Excellent, natural-looking, long-lasting results

This is an exciting new way to handle a very common problem. Call our office at 216-524-4410 and schedule a complimentary consultation with Dr. Bilski.

Resident is appalled by bird bowling

To the Editor: In regards to issue February 2015 and

article “BBHHS bowling with the bird benefits the needy,” I am compelled to give an opinion. I find it appalling to use an animal carcass that was meant to be food as a bowling ball. That animal had a life once and was a beautiful bird that is the symbol of Thanksgiving. Hope-fully, it took its beating and became food again.

Cleveland Water addresses water main breaks by Nancy Hudec

Cold weather, combined with aging water pipes and shut-off valves, made for a watery, icy mess on Snowville Road in January.

“The water lines are old and so are the valves,” said Brecksville Service Director Ron Weidig. “We could not get the valves to shut the water off to fix the pipe.”

According to Jason Wood, chief of public affairs for the city of Cleveland Division of Water, “valves are a critical component of the water distribution system.”

“When water main breaks happen,” he said, “valves allow us to isolate the leak and make repairs in a way that minimizes loss of service to customers. Like mains, age can impact the ability to operate valves, and, occasionally, they are not operable.”

“Our system has enough reliability that when we cannot close a valve, we go to the next available valve in the system to isolate the leak and schedule the inoperable valve for replacement,” added Wood.

Weidig said although Cleveland Water eventually got the water turned off at the Snowville line break, some area businesses were without water.

“That in turn meant some west Snowville Road businesses were unable to open, but there was nothing else to be done,” Weidig said.

Wood said the Brecksville transmission mains are made of pre-stressed concrete and the distribution mains are made of ductile iron and cast iron. The majority of the mains in Brecksville were installed after 1950, he added, although some date back to the 1920s.

“On the whole, this is far younger than what we see in some of the older communi-ties in our service area,” he said.

Snowville is not alone in having burst-ing water lines. This winter water pipes have burst on Wiese Road, Route 82 and Chippewa Road and Robin, Barr, Farview, Lawnpark, Crestview and Riverview roads, according to Weidig. None of the breaks resulted in a boil water alert.

“These are all cold weather related,” he said. “The water finds a weak link in the lines and pretty soon there is a problem. The water runs out of the ground, the ground around the break becomes satu-rated and it eventually caves in.”

Cleveland Water does pipe repair work, then city crews do final restoration. Yet, the repair process is a bit more complicated

and involved than it may appear. Wood elaborated by saying that 85 miles

of Cleveland Water’s 5,200 transmission and distribution lines are in Brecksville. Five of those miles are transmission mains, meaning the pipes are 20 inches or larger. Transmission mains move water from one part of the service area to another.

“Distribution mains are smaller than 20 inches and are the pipes used to deliver wa-ter to a customer’s property. In Brecksville, there are about 80 miles of distribution mains,” Wood said.

The distinction between the two types of mains is important. Under the service agreement with Cleveland Water, Brecks-ville owns all of the distribution mains.

“This means Cleveland Water is respon-sible for repairs when a water main leak occurs, but Brecksville is responsible for capital replacement of the distribution mains as they move past their useful life,” Wood said.

“When breaks do occur, they are pri-oritized based on a number of factors, such as public safety, traffic and business impact and loss of service, and Cleveland Water works hard to repair them quickly,” he said. “Most leaks are fully repaired in a week or less.”

Weidig said city crews do their best to repair the leaks and surrounding streets quickly. ∞

Brecksville Magazine celebrates the last quarter century in the community

Larsen Lumber represents key piece of Brecksville historyby Kristen Ashby

The history of Brecksville businesses runs deep. As a rural community, many of Brecksville’s first businesses focused on serving local farmers. In 1813, just two years after Brecksville was founded, Lemuel Hoadley built the first grist mill so neighboring farmers could grind their grain into flour.

Over the next century, additional buildings were added to the mill and the business officially became known as the

Brecksville Milling Co. The mill produced oats and flour, offering a much-needed service during a time when bread was a staple part of residents’ diets.

Later, in the 1900s, as Brecksville be-gan to transition into a residential com-munity, businessman Harry Larsen saw an opportunity to transform the mill. He purchased the property in 1947 and founded Larsen Lumber & Supply Co., a building materials supplier for home-builders, remodelers, contractors and

In 1990, the Hubble telescope was launched, East and West Germany reunited and the World Wide Web was created. The world-changing events ushered in a new age of information and technology across the country. Across the city of Brecksville, a new monthly magazine was launched and an additional source of hometown in-formation was created.

The Brecksville Magazine made its

debut in May 1990, and was the first new Brecksville news source in 15 years.

The Magazine, the third in the ScripType family, followed the Richfield Times and Hinckley Record, and was in turn followed by the Broadview Journal in November 1990, and subsequently, five other community magazines. Now 25 years later, Brecksville Magazine is taking a look back at some of the people and places featured in our first issues. ∞

homeowners. Once home to

the city’s first grist mill, the property – which is fitting-ly located at the corner of Mill and Brecksville roads – now features a unique combina-tion of new tech-nology and histori-cal charm. In fact, some of the build-ings on site date back to the turn of the 20th century, said Bill Larsen, a grandson of Harry Larsen and the company’s current vice president of finance.

“There are still rings on the side of our building to tie horses to,” Bill Larsen said. “And you can still see, in the creek’s bedrock, the location of the former wall that diverted water from the creek to the grist mill.”

Bill’s father, Don Larsen, joined the family business in 1956, after graduat-ing from college. Over the next three decades, Don and Harry built Larsen Lumber into one of Northeast Ohio’s most respected building suppliers, mak-ing the company a fixture in Brecksville.

Although semi-retired, Don continues to oversee the family business, which now spans four generations. His sons Bill and Rick head up the management team, while his daughter and sons-in-law manage the company’s office, op-erations and sales. Don’s grandchildren have also begun to get involved.

time,” Bill Larsen said. “This truly is a family business.”

In the last few decades, the Larsen family has guided the company through a changing business climate. Originally, their customers were almost an even mix of contractors and homeowners. Today, that customer base has tipped signifi-cantly in favor of professional builders and contractors, who make up nearly 80 percent of their business.

“Homeowners, who previously asked us how to build things, are now asking for the name of a good contractor,” Bill Larsen said. “We’ve seen a swing from, ‘I’m going to build this (myself )’ to, ‘I want this built for me.’”

Aside from a shifting market, one of the biggest challenges the company faced in recent years was the massive flood that struck in the summer of 2006. The flood eroded the nearby creek bank and carried away $100,000 worth of lumber. Shortly after, the local and national economy dipped as a result of the great recession, but the company held steady and continued to expand its products and services.

Today, Larsen Lumber offers dozens of wood-based products, from flooring to cabinetry, and even provides design consultations. But look a little closer, and you’ll see that it remains closely connected to its roots as a key piece of Brecksville’s history. Whether their customers arrive on horseback or in cars, Larsen Lumber has been entrenched in this community for nearly 70 years. And with a fourth generation of family mem-bers on deck, it’s likely to continue that rich legacy for decades to come. ∞

Council approves equipment sales, playground improvementsby Nancy HudecJan. 20 council meeting

In true “out with the old and in with the new” fashion and as required by the Ohio Revised Code, city council approved the Internet sale of municipal property no longer needed for municipal purposes.

According to Brecksville Director of Pur-chasing Becki Riser, the auction efforts are not driven by potential monetary return, but are required by the state. Items to be auc-tioned include motor vehicles, road machin-ery, equipment, tools and various supplies in the city inventory. The net proceeds will be deposited in the general operating fund.

Council also approved a resolution au-thorizing the mayor to apply for a $4,384 Community Recycling Awareness Grant through the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District. The money would, Riser said, allow the city to purchase five recycling containers for placement in various city locations.

Kids Quarters revampThe younger Brecksville community,

specifically the playground crowd, can look

for CodeRED Emergency Notification in the amount of $9,980 and Weather Warning Service for $3,750.

Council approved paying $9,000 to Sundance Systems for annual support of the CAD Disaster and Mobile Data software and $600 for the renewal of the public records online software. The software is used by the Brecksville police department.

Stadium Drive vehicle storageCity Engineer Gerald Wise asked for, and

council approved, an additional $856 for earthwork testing and an expanded scope of services, including hazardous material testing and reporting, on the Stadium Drive vehicle storage and horticulture building. The original amount of the invoice was $7,350. The new total is $8,206. ∞

forward to what is old becoming new again. Council approved the city’s 2015 Nature Works grant application to the Ohio De-partment of Natural Resources. The grant is for funding playground structures on the grounds of Brecksville’s Kids Quarters.

Mayor Jerry Hruby said, “It is not a playground redo, but it is for removing a small section and replacing it with a new feature. We want to remove the hill with the large, walk-through concrete pipe and replace it with additional toddler events and a double glide.”

Hruby estimated the entire project at $35,000. Grant funding covers up to 75 percent of any project.

Contracts renewedA contract extension was approved for

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) has concluded its traffic study on State Route 82/Royalton Road in the cities of Brecksville and Broadview Heights between Highland Drive and Treeworth Boulevard. Brecksville City Council sup-ported ODOT’s recommendation to reduce the speed limit.

“The speed study is recommending to ODOT, 25 [miles per hour] from Brecksville Road to Highland, 45 [miles per hour] from Highland out to the freeway and 35 [miles per hour] the rest of the way,” City Engineer Gerald Wise said.

“ODOT has now requested that the city, in order for them to move forward they [ODOT] would need that resolution passed and then they would act on it and let us know. And then we would need to post signs and then at that point it would become enforceable,” he said.

Wise said he and Mayor Jerry Hruby were happy with ODOT’s safety recom-mendations.

Council increased the purchase order (PO) to the city engineer in the amount of $6,000 for an estimated 1.5 weeks orftime for Donald G. Bohning and Associates to perform construction-related tasks at the Stadium Drive service garage and Horticul-

ture Building. The total purchase order now stands at $18,000.

“Right now we’re closing in on our existing PO. Our services are hourly as needed. We have not exceeded the existing PO. We’re just asking that since there is still quite a bit longer before they finish the building to increase the PO in the event that Ron [Weidig, service director], Scott [Packard, building inspector], or anyone would need me down on the site,” Wise said.

Weidig said that indoor construction work, such as electrical and plumbing, has continued on the building throughout the winter.

“It’s coming along well,” he said.In other business, council:

• Appointed Brandy L. Murphy as a part-time police dispatcher to fill a vacancy;

• Authorized the purchasing department to advertise for bids for a new rear-loading rubbish packer for the service department;

• Authorized $3,851 for Service Department apparel;

• Issued a resolution expressing condolence to the family of Benjamin T. Jeremiah and commending his contribution to the city of Brecksville;

• Issued a resolution of commendation to Nanci Schlabig upon her retirement from service as a member of the city’s recreation commission. ∞

District leaders talk classroom technology, strategic vision, busing by Tess WolfeJan. 26 work session and regular meeting

Board President Mark Jantzen turned the f loor over to Superintendent Scot Prebles to introduce strategic vision pro-

posals for the 2015-2016 academic year. If approved by the board in coming months, the proposed changes would result in $312,000 in expenses and $242,000 in reductions, leaving a total cost to the district

of $70,000. Among the elements Prebles covered were

proposed changes in media and technology for students. He suggested that software for internal, longitudinal tracking of students’ academic progress was merited. Prebles also proposed that, starting with the 2015-2016 academic year, each sixth-grade student be assigned his or her own laptop device, encouraging student accountability and responsibility, which would also result in the eventual integration of assigned laptops from sixth through twelfth grades. Paired with reducing computer lab use in the schools, this would not result in increased cost to the district. It could potentially involve an increase in specialists and a de-crease in assistants at the media center.

“Technology integration is extremely important,” Prebles said. “This is a move toward more personalization, more respon-sibility for [students’] own equipment and learning.”

regarding the use of the media center, staff-ing and coordination of the equipment and computer labs. Several board members em-phasized that further discussion would be required prior to any action on the matter.

Prebles agreed that these proposals were for further board consideration, but added, “We believe this is the future… What we want to do is make it consistent across the entire school district.”

At the regular meeting, board members voted unanimously to no longer provide district school bus transportation to Brecksville and Broadview Heights stu-dents attending St. Ignatius High School. That would save the district $33,000 annually. According to the Jan. 14 let-ter Prebles sent to St. Ignatius Principal Dan Bradesca, six factors identified by the Ohio Revised Code were considered, including transportation costs, mileage and ridership. Morning ridership to the Cleveland private school averaged four to eight students, while the afternoon return trip averaged one to three students. The BBHCSD will reimburse parents of St. Ignatius students for transportation begin-ning with the next academic year.

Among the staff recommendations ap-

proved unanimously by the board was the retirement of Carla Calevich. The direc-tor of curriculum and instruction for the school district will retire on June 30, after 36 years of service.

The position will be posted during the second week of February, she said.

Other retirements at the end of Febru-ary include those of BBHCSD bus drivers Sharon Robinson-Figueroa, after 30 years of service, and Ellen Sanzo, after 28 years with the district.

Prior to adjournment, the board unani-mously voted to go into executive session. ∞

Longtime educator/administrator retires by Michele Collins

Carla Calevich got her first job in the Brecksville School District as a fourth-grade teacher in 1979. She was hired the Friday before school started and when asked if she could get her classroom ready over the weekend, she didn’t hesitate to say yes. Thirty-six years later, Calevich has that same sort of ready-to-go attitude as she enters a new phase in her life, that of retirement.

Effective June 30, Calevich will no

longer go to work in the same district she has worked in for her entire career. But she plans to stay active in education and to continue to help others in her community.

“It has been an honor and a privilege to have been at Brecksville-Broadview Heights for my career. Many people come to the district and don’t leave and that is a tribute to what kind of a district it is and what kind of people work here,” said Calevich.

“I guess what I will miss most, though, are the staff and the students. They are the ones that make it hard to leave.”

Calevich said she is already planning to stay involved during her retirement.

“I hope to volunteer in the Brecksville-Broadview Heights community and with my church. There are many ways to provide service to our community and I look forward to doing that,” she said. In addition, Calevich said she will continue to stay involved in education, perhaps

through consulting work. Calevich has a lot of experience to draw

from. In addition to teaching fourth-grade at Chippewa Elementary, she taught high school Spanish and reading at Brecksville Broadview Heights High School. She was then a principal at Chippewa Elementary and in 2003, took the position she cur-rently holds as Director of Curriculum and Instruction for the district.

A graduate of Villa Angela High School, Calevich obtained her undergraduate de-gree in education from John Carroll Uni-

versity. She received a master’s degree from John Carroll University and her principal certification from the University of Akron. She obtained her doctorate in curriculum and instruction from Kent State University.

Being in education for 36 years, gave her a unique perspective. She said she has seen an entire shift in the way students learn over her three decades in education. When she started teaching, she said education centered on students listening to facts the teacher would review. Today, she said edu-cation is a collaborative system where tech-nology goes hand-in-hand with instruction and where students are encouraged to find the answers themselves in real time.

She added that one of the positives of

today’s education system is that it encour-ages lifelong learning–something Calevich herself has embraced during her time at BBH school district.

“Being a teacher was my dream since I was a small child. I had an aunt that was a teacher and she became a mentor for me. As young as second or third grade, I would help my teachers grade papers or put up bulletin boards. I just knew that I wanted to be a teacher and that has never changed,” she said.

And even after 36 years, Calevich, the teacher, the principal and the administra-tor, will continue her quest for lifelong learning as she moves into this new phase in her life. ∞

Electrify Your Strings concert benefits orchestra studentsby Kay Kerezy

Although the Brecksville-Broadview Heights orchestras have branched out from a traditional, all classical-music style from time to time, a unique experience is coming. Middle School Orchestra Di-rector Jennifer O’Neal is bringing Mark Wood and Bridgid Bibbens, from Trans-Siberian Orchestra fame, to the middle school for two concerts.

The Electrify Your Strings (EYS) pro-gram, created by Wood, has Wood and Bibbens facilitating workshops with the middle school and high school orchestra students. On Saturday, March 7, at 6

p.m., the middle school orchestra will per-form in concert, with Wood and Bibbens. The high school students will perform with Wood and Bibbens at 8 p.m. The concerts give the students an opportunity to showcase their newly acquired talents from the EYS program.

O’Neal wanted to bring something dif-ferent to the students, because, she said, “Music is, and should be, an extension of ourselves that not only expresses who we are but can also express the current world we live in. EYS gives our students an opportunity to share 21st century ideas in music education and they will have a

blast being a part of it.”A supporter of public education, Wood

created the EYS program because, he said, “We saw an important opportunity as professional musicians to give back, that’s our initial instinct.”

The program has many goals; one is to introduce technology and incorporate a wide variety of styles. Wood said he does not want to replace classical music but augment it. His style, he said, compli-ments the curriculum that teachers have been using for 400 years.

Another goal is to elevate music pro-grams so they are equal with academic

and athletic programs. “Music stimulates brain activity and the grades of a child in school,” he said. We try to send messages out to the communities, parents, and administrators that music programs are critically important. Less than ten percent of public schools have string programs and it’s shrinking.”

A New York native, Wood’s mother graduated from Oberlin Conservatory. He said, “She had four boys in four years and was determined to have a string quartet.” The brothers performed in a quartet. Afterward, Wood said, he would go home and listen to Led Zeppelin and the Beatles. He said he did not initially understand that the music he loved could be fused with his classical training.

Wood was given a full viola scholarship to Juilliard at age 15. Instead of pursuing classical music in a traditional way he sought to try new things. He switched to the violin and in addition to being a founding member of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Wood said, “I invented the first electric violin. The violin, viola, and cello world had not changed in 400 years until I came along. I am still the only person in the world still pursing this. We are celebrating 25 years and all the famous electric violinists play our instruments.”

The EYS program also introduces new

concepts of expression and connecting with the kids of today who are completely connected to their technology. “Comput-ers, iPhones and iPads have changed our society in the world dramatically,” Wood said. “If we don’t incorporate new styles and new types of learning we will struggle with relevancy in our school programs.”

The workshops promote empowerment and support. “Since music is an elective, recruitment and retention is important to keep kids connected to musical instru-ments,” he stated. He said his belief is that the mind, body and soul are critically

important to creative expression and his students learn that message through the music.

At each concert a four-string Electric Stingray Violin, created by Mark Wood, will be raffled off. Raffle tickets are $3 each or four for $10. All proceeds from the concert and raffle benefit the middle school and high school orches-tras. Concert tickets, $15 each or $25 for both shows, can be purchased at bit.ly/BBHEYStickets.com or for will-call tickets, email O’Neal at [email protected]. ∞

Today’s Topic: Leg Pain

Do you feel burning, cramping numbness or aching in your leg(s)? Do cramps in your calves keep you awake at night? In many cases, leg pain is caused by subluxations in the spine. Subluxations are misalignments of the bones in the body, and referred pain can occur in the legs (or other extremities like wrists, hands and feet). In many cases, lower back subluxations are the cause of leg pain, such as with sciatica problems. The displaced or subluxated bones put pressure on nerves, causing muscle spasms or pain. To get rid of the pain naturally, we must remove the pressure on the nerves, not cover-up symptoms with drugs. Chiropractic adjustments can realign the bones of the spine to ease leg pain safely and effectively without the use of surgery or drugs. Call me today at 440-838-5755 if you want to have legs that are free of pain!

Heinen’s stays true to founder’s philosophyby Kristin Wedemeyer Goss

Joe Heinen likely would not believe his eyes if he stepped into the Ameritrust rotunda bui lding at East 9th Street and Euclid Avenue. In his day, it was the Cleveland Trust bank. Today, it is the latest store to bear his name. With three floors and four levels beneath the Ti f f any s t a ined -glass dome, the new Heinen’s is a far cry f rom the modest butcher shop Hein-en opened on Kins-man Road in 1929.

Heinen’s remains a family business now run by Joe’s grand-sons, Tom and Jeff, who became co-presidents in 1994 following the death of their father. Very few companies make it to third-generation ownership said Jeff Heinen, who commented, “We believe the reason we’ve beaten the odds so far is that Heinen’s has never deviated from the two principles our grandfather started with–believing in your people making the difference and providing exceptional service and quality.”

Heinen called the decision to open a downtown store “very risky,” but

The downtown store brings the number of Heinen’s to 22, including four recently opened in the Chicago area. The decision to open those stores was based on two

main factors, according to Heinen. “If we were going to attract and retain

The Fountain of Youth for Baby Boomers!

Throughout history, explorers have searched for the fabled Fountain of Youth. The promise of taking a simple drink to defy the aging process is certainly attractive! Un-fortunately, such a pool probably only exists in our childlike imaginations. That doesn’t mean we are doomed to fall apart. There are a few ways that we can instigate control to help our bodies age more gracefully.

STRENGTHEN YOUR MUSCLES AND BONESA resistance-training program can add precious muscle

back to your frame and increase overall strength. Strength training over a period of time can prevent bone loss, which helps conditions such as osteoporosis. Weight training also protects joints that are affected by arthritis.

EAT CLEAN FOR HEALTHMany ailments that are often attributed to “old age” are

actually the result of poor fitness. By making sound nutri-tious choices, you can ward off conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol. Fruits and vegetables contain many vitamins and minerals that our bodies need to function. They also contain powerful antioxi-dants, which boost your immune system and improve your memory!

KEEP UP WITH YOUR GRANDKIDSWe often hear that as we get older our metabolism slows

down, but what truly slows down? We do! As kids, we run around the yard and have endless amounts of energy. Then we get busy with a family and job where we sit for most of the day. By getting in planned, regular exercise you can increase your energy and improve your endurance so that you can actually keep up with the little bundles of joy when they’re around…at least until you have to give them back!

have here in Cleveland.” In addition to a top-notch staff, staying

current with trends is another factor in the company’s success, said Heinen.

“We are always working on staying rele-vant with our product selection. That’s an on-going challenge since something like 25 thousand new items get introduced each and every year. Suddenly gluten free, raw foods, probiotics–to mention a few–are becoming more and more main-stream. The challenge is meeting those new needs while still meeting the needs of long established eating habits,” he said.

Being a small com-pany with its own distribution enables it to offer products in a way that is not possible for larger chains.

“ We p u r c h a s e most of our produce direct from people we know, and they know who they are selling to,” Heinen said. “In the sum-mer, about 70 percent of the produce we sell is local produce and we carry 500 local

products that are in every department of the store.”

Finally, there is the meat and seafood. “We know the people who raise our beef. We know where it comes from, how it was fed and that it was humanely treated,” said Heinen.

Seafood comes via FedEx from Alaska, Hawaii and the East Coast six days a week.

Now that the downtown store is open, Heinen said it’s time to “take a deep breath” and let things settle. He added, “We are not about getting bigger, just better.” ∞

Rescued pup finds new life as therapy dogby Kimberly Bonvissuto

Willet Adornetto’s entrance into this world was anything but spectacular.

The 10-year-old Cairn terrier was born into a puppy mill in Georgia in 2005. His life looked bleak, until the California-based Col. Potter Cairn Res-cue Network (CPCRN) rescued Willet and 26 other dogs in 2008. The rescuers named all of the nameless dogs after birds because there were so many of them. Willet was named after a shorebird.

Back in Ohio, Belinda Adornetto was looking for a family pet. She and her husband, Robert, owned several dogs over the years, and Adornetto knew what she wanted – a calm, adult dog she could take anywhere. She turned to her veterinarian, Gretchen Zarle at Bartels Pet Hospital in Brecksville, who works with rescue groups.

Zarle directed Adornetto to the CPCRN website – and she discovered Willet. After speaking to the foster

family caring for Willet and filling out the paperwork through CPCRN, it was determined that Willet was the perfect fit for the Adornetto household.

There was only one problem – Willet was in New Mexico. While the rescue sometimes flew dogs to new owners, Wil-let’s small size –he was only 10 pounds – made everyone concerned that he would not survive the flight into Cleveland in the belly of a plane in January.

So Adornetto herself flew out of Cleveland on a Saturday and was head-ing home with Willet on Sunday. She had to switch planes in Houston on the return flight and found herself sprint-ing through the airport to meet her connecting flight, which the crew was holding when they heard she was trav-eling with her dog. She finally made it, out of breath, when a gentleman sitting near her called her “one of those kind of women who can’t fly anywhere without your pet.”

When Adornetto announced she had just rescued Willet from a puppy mill, the passengers cheered and a compas-sionate flight attendant ushered Ador-netto and Willet to their own row so Willet could have his own seat and look out the window.

“I did a lot of research. This group re-ally tries to fix you up with the correct dog for your lifestyle,” Adornetto said of the CPCRN. “Willet was a plug-and-play dog in our house. He fit right in.”

M11 RESCUED PUP FINDSChippewa Place resident Rick Kassel gets and gives some tender loving care from Willet.

M15 RESCUED PUP FINDSWillet is a rescue dog and a member of Therapy Dogs International, delivering smiles and good cheer.

About a year later, a photographer tak-ing Willet’s Christmas photo noted his relaxed nature and suggested Adornetto check out Therapy Dogs International to see if Willet had what it takes to be a therapy dog. He did, passing his test in 2010.

Willet’s career as a therapy dog began in the dental office of Adornetto’s hus-band, Robert.

“After he became certified as a therapy dog, I put a notice out that if patients were nervous they could request to have Willet sit with them,” she said. “The patients took us up on it. Some of them aren’t even dog lovers – he’s that good.”

Adornetto, who works in the infor-mation technology field, was familiar with Chippewa Place, a senior living community in Brecksville, after her mother-in-law moved into the facility. Through Therapy Dogs International, Adornetto arranged to bring Willet in for a monthly group visit. During one visit, Adornetto noticed a particu-larly grumpy gentleman. After Willet performed a few tricks, she asked the residents if they wanted to hold the dog.

“I was nervous about going to this gentleman because he looked so angry,” Adornetto said. But he shook his head “yes” and Adornetto placed Willet on his lap. “He started to pet him and started laughing. Everyone stopped for

Who is Toth Painting

Solutions?

–Paid Advertisement –

Any home or business owner who has ever attempted to paint the inside of a room or the outside of a storefront knows how difficult it can be and how much precision and time is involved.

So do the experienced painters at Toth Painting Solutions. This team of professionals takes every measure necessary and uses only the highest quality materials to ensure that each job is done correctly and with integrity.

“People call us because they expect that we’re going to do the best job,” said business owner and founder Kristopher Toth, who started the company in 2000. “We get the best painters we can find; we have quality craftsmen working for us.”

Toth and his staff of 10 painters, many of whom have been with Toth Painting Solutions for more than five years, serve clients throughout the Greater Cleveland area having completed jobs from Hinckley and Richfield, to Cleveland and Avon Lake.

“We don’t work for any specific area, and we don’t want to turn anyone away,” said Toth. “We just want to serve anyone who wants the job done right.”

Toth Painting Solutions paints interiors and exteriors of residences and light commercial and industrial businesses, such as offices, storefronts and funeral homes. The business has tenured workers who know how to repair water damage in drywall and ceilings, remove wallpaper, refinish aluminum and vinyl siding, and paint vaulted ceilings, among other crucial tasks.

The business’ office is in Parma, but Toth is a Brecksville resident and takes his time to become

as much a part of that city’s business community as possible, like giving 1% of Brecksville sales to the city food bank. Toth Painting Solutions is a member of the Brecksville Chamber of Commerce and regularly carries out jobs in Brecksville, Broadview Heights, North Royalton and Independence.

The company is also a four-time winner of the Angie’s List Super Service Award, most recently in 2014, and is a member of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI).

“Being involved in NARI not only keeps us in the loop as to what’s going on in the remodeling industry, but it holds us to a higher ethical standard as a business,” said Toth. “It’s an organization that makes us better overall.”

“We want to focus on our customers first,” said Toth. “We’re going to be the ones who call you back, show up on time and, most importantly, do a clean, quality job.”

Kristopher Toth is President Elect at NARI, is on the Board of Directors at Brecksville Chamber of Commerce, and on the board of directors at the Cleveland Better Business Bureau.

Toth Painting Solutions is located at 5530 State Rd., Unit 4, in Parma. Call 216-459-8684, email [email protected] or visit tothpainting.com for more information.

Relay for Life of Cuyahoga Valley

prepares for 2015 event

Relay For Life of Cuyahoga Valley is building momentum for their 2015 event to help the American Cancer Society. Relay For Life of Cuyahoga Valley includes participants from North Royalton, Broadview Heights and Brecksville.

The 2015 leadership team is an-nouncing a coffee and cookies night of fun and fellowship on Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 7-8:30 p.m. at the North Royalton City Hall meeting room, 14600 State Rd. Members of the leadership team and team captains will talk with attendees and answer questions.

The Relay For Life event is Friday, June 5, at the Broadview Heights Recreation Center fields, 9543 Broadview Rd., from 6 p.m. to midnight. Joelle Kluck of the Ameri-can Cancer Society is the Com-munity Manager for Relay For Life of Cuyahoga Valley. a moment and stared because he never smiles at anything. That was a major breakthrough for him to be laughing so much and holding and petting the dog.”

Paula Ligas, activity director at Chip-pewa Place, said Adornetto brings a Polaroid camera to give photographs of the residents holding the dog to them after their visit.

Rescued Pup continued “The dog is amazing. I’ve never seen a dog so calm. He’ll sit on everybody’s lap. Sometimes he just falls asleep,” Ligas said, adding that many of her residents had to give up their dogs when they moved into the facility. “You can see how calm it makes the residents.”

Willet also makes the rounds at the Oaks of Brecksville Health and Rehabili-tation Center. Activities Director Patty Germana said Willet has been a fixture

for about a year.“One of the things our dementia

residents enjoy is animals, children and music. They can really relate to them,” Germana said. “It really helps for resi-dents who tend not to come out of their rooms. It’s some kind of stimulation.”

Adornetto said there is a great deal of planning that goes into each visit, starting with limiting Willet’s diet the day before, bathing him that morning, providing sterilized blankets to place Willet on when he visits nursing home residents, and wiping him down between each visit.

“It’s a whole process,” she said. “The fun part for him is after he’s done with his work I take him to Lemonberry Fro-zen Yogurt for a vanilla frozen yogurt. That’s his reward for doing the work.” ∞

The Brecksville Magazine, March 201526

About Townby Linda Niro

The end of February brings visions of spring. After another snowy winter, it will be much deserved.

What did you do special this winter? Whether it involved cold weather or warm let About Town know.

The 19th Annual Tri-C High School Rock-Off finals were on Feb. 7, at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Area high school and middle school musicians com-peted, hoping to prove that they were the best around. One Brecksville singer had

to compete against herself. Jacqueline Ward, an eighth- grader at St. Michael School, is in the band Never Surrender with her bass-playing sister Marina, a junior at Walsh Jesuit High School, and other classmates from surrounding areas. They also made it to the finals last year. Drift, the other band Jackie sings in, competed for the first time this year and moved on to the finals. Greg Kondas, another Brecksville resident and school-mate of Jackie is a member of Drift. Eileen and Joe Ward, the girls’ parents, and many neighbors were on hand to cheer for the bands.

Congratulations to the Cheer World Omega team. At a recent competition, the Hard Rockin’ Nationals, the Omega team won a Grand Champion prize and received a partial payment award toward their bid to the national competition later this year. Cheer World is an offshoot of Gym World. The athletes on the Omega team are mainly high school students from Brecksville-Broadview Heights, and the surrounding area.

The city of Brecksville is putting its money where the snow is; the first major snowstorm of January used 600 tons of road salt in 16 hours. At $49 per ton, plus diesel fuel charges and employee overtime, it cost the city a cool $30,000. The storm also brought out all the big plows, 10 three-ton trucks and four tan-dem trucks.

Congratulations to Alecia Farina. The BBHHS junior won every event at the January Rock and Roll gymnastics clas-sic. She scored a perfect 10.0, just a wee bit higher than her state record of 9.9 for vault.

Congratulations to dean’s list stu-dents: Naomi Anderson, Ohio State University; Caitlin Joyce Leiby, Emily L. Myers, University of Kentucky; Em-ily Jean McArtor, Otterbein Univerity; Triantafyllos Krokos, Youngstown State University; Alyssa Carollo, Katherine

Adoptees allowed access to original birth certificatesBeginning March 20, 400,000 people

born in Ohio and adopted between 1964 and 1996 can request a copy of their original birth certificate. A 1963 Ohio law closed those records in 1964. A new law, advocated for by Adoption Network Cleveland, is opening them.

Ohio is the ninth state to change their laws and allow access to adoptee records from a previously closed period. Equal ac-cess to original birth certificates has been a public policy goal of Adoption Network Cleveland since 1988. ∞

ville Recreation Director, has transferred to Bowling Green State University from the U.S. Navel Academy. Dad Tom says being able to play wide receiver at Bowl-ing Green brought him back to Ohio. Following in his brother’s wide -receiv-ing footsteps is the youngest Tupa son, Tyler. Tyler is a BBHHS junior. Oldest son Tom is a red-shirted quarterback at Miami University. Let’s not forget the lady in the bunch: BBHHS freshman and varsity volleyball star Emma Tupa. No punters or kickers in the bunch.

Condolences are extended to the family of Ben Jeremiah, long -time chairman of the Human Services advisory board. Jeremiah, who died in January, was also a member of the city’s Telecommunica-tions Commission when cable came to town. A Purple Heart recipient as a WW II B-17 navigator, he and Homer Farr led the popular monthly WWII veterans meetings at the Human Services Center.

Condolences are also extended to the family of Charles Sifford, who died this month. Sifford was the first African-American to be admitted to the Profes-sional Golfers Association in 1960. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2004. Sifford was recognized for his determination and boundary breaking in November, when he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. ∞

Seal the dealby Arlene J. Coloma, D.D.S., M.S.

What are dental sealants? Why does my child need them? How long will they last? These are a few of the questions that parents ask about dental sealants.

Dental sealants are a thin plastic coating applied to the grooves of the chewing surfaces on permanent molars to help pro-tect them from decay. They act as a physical barrier to help seal out germs and bacteria. Dental sealants are commonly placed on the permanent molars. The first molars that erupt in a child’s mouth are commonly referred to as their six-year molars because they erupt around the age of 6 years. The second set of molars erupts in a child’s mouth around the age of 12 and are commonly referred to as the 12-year molars. All of these permanent

teeth are meant to remain in your child’s mouth for the remainder of his/her adult life.

The 6- and 12-year molars can sometimes be difficult to clean due to their position in the mouth. These molars tend to have many grooves and pits that can often be difficult to keep free from food, germs and bacteria. The majority of children’s cavities occur in these grooves and pits. Sealants are meant to cover these deeper areas and help make the surfaces smoother so bacteria have a more difficult time penetrating these surfaces.

Sealants are considered to be a preventative measure to help minimize the likelihood of cavities. Dental sealants are much less invasive than fillings. They protect the tooth and help to prevent needing dental treatment. They are placed in an attempt to avoid decay, therefore leaving the tooth in a much stronger position to fight off future unwanted bacteria and germs.

Sealants can last for many years and should be checked every six months at a routine dental check up. As long as the sealants remain intact, the tooth surface is protected from decay. Sealants hold up well under normal chewing conditions and are most important during the first years of the tooth’s existence in when the grooves and pits are most prominent. With the incorporation of sealants into your child’s preventative dental care, your child can be well on their way to eliminating future tooth decay.

Best Furnace Choiceby Tom Olecki

Furnaces built today basically come in two different efficiencies: 80% or 95%. Should you find yourself in need of a new furnace, an important question to address is how efficient a furnace should you invest in?

Today, the premium and most efficient gas furnaces are around 95-97% effi-cient. These furnaces will benefit you with

reduced gas bills, longer heat exchanger warranties and quieter operation. If your old furnace was manufactured approximately 20 years ago or more, its efficiency might be 70% or less. You could be saving 25% or more with this new furnace.

The 95% furnaces are installed a little differently than a typical standard effi-ciency furnace. For example, the exhaust

piping cannot go to your chimney. The 95% furnace is so efficient that we no longer need a high temperature vent system. These fur-naces are vented through the side-wall of your home using PVC plas-tic vent materials. A drain is usually required near the furnace as well.

In contrast, a basic, standard efficiency furnace manufactured to-day is 80 percent efficient. These fur-naces will save you around 10% over a typical furnace that is over 20 years old, and 80% furnaces are usually vented or exhausted to your chimney. A chimney liner may be required to prevent conden-sation in some instances. These furnaces install for about $1,000 less than a com-parably featured 95% furnace.

So which should you choose? Since we have found there is really no big dif-ference in reliability between furnaces, I suggest you base your choice on the following:

A 95% furnace costs more to buy and install than a standard furnace. Payback for the extra money you invest will be around 5-6 years. If you’re plans are to sell your home in less than that amount of time, you would be money ahead if you chose a standard furnace. Standard ef-ficiency furnaces are a good solution also for a rental property where your tenant is responsible for the gas bill.

Best value: If you plan to stay in your home, there is no reason not to get the most efficient furnace, if you can afford the initial extra cost. Selecting high ef-ficiency will benefit you in both comfort and savings and will pay for itself over and again during its life.

This Year stop worrying about your weight and focus on losing your FAT!

by Eric Schaefer, MPT Manager, Broadview Heights

Year round, day or night, awake or sleeping, many people believe that if they eat healthy, they will lose fat. And, almost anyone you ask claims they eat healthy.

I’ve had clients come into our studios that we igh 100 pounds and you’d think they were healthy because they look skinny, but 50 pounds of that scale weight was fat. It’s the unwanted ac-cess pounds of fat that cause so many of our country’s current

health problems. Looking at the facts, the only way to lose fat is to consume fewer calories than your body burns daily. Yet, more than two-thirds of the U.S. popula-tion is overweight or obese, so there is an obvious discrepancy here.

The easy explanation for this is that most people overestimate the healthful-ness of their diet, which is usually true. However, the more important distinction is that “healthy” eating and fat-loss eating are not the same things. If you are eating healthy, you are not necessarily going to be burning fat. There are several foods and food groups that are healthy – meaning they contain high amounts of vitamins and minerals, as well as healthy fiber or good fats – but will do very little to help burn fat.

Research over the past several years has really revolutionized the way we look at how we can effectively burn fat. Not only has it been proven that traditional aerobic exercise is one of the least effective forms of exercise, it’s also one of the most time consuming and could even be counter-productive. You’re really getting the least amount of bang for your buck when you spend extended amounts of time running on a treadmill.

High-intensity interval training, on the other hand, has consistently risen to the top as the most effective and efficient form of exercise. You’re actually getting MORE benefits from high-intensity training than

you do from aerobic/cardio in a fraction of the time – all because you’re utilizing your body as it was designed to be used. You can literally be done in about 20 minutes, compared to spending an hour running on the treadmill. And, for the record, strength training is not just for men, women have reportedly started weight training in record numbers!

When you focus solely on diet you’re not addressing the aging process of losing muscle yearly, which lowers your metabo-lism. So, truly, if you’ve struggled finding time for an effective exercise routine, this could be the solution you’ve been looking for. The key to make it work is intensity. The intensity needs to be high enough that you reach muscle fatigue.

Prepare Your Child for Future Careers This Summer

By Nanci Coleman, CVCC Community Liaison

Many of the high-demand jobs of the future do not even exist today. Many yet-to-be-discovered products and services will be at the forefront of our economy in years to come. So…how do parents and educators prepare students for future careers, using technologies that haven’t been invented, to solve problems we don’t yet have?

One of the best things we can do to prepare students for their future is to expose them to a variety of experi-ences that will develop their self awareness. The more students know about themselves, the better prepared they will be to connect with careers that match who they are. Summer Career Camps provide students multiple opportunities to engage in activities that will unleash their innate skills and intensify their interests.

CVCC Summer Career Camps provide campers with the opportunity to “try on” a career for a week. While they acquire new skills, they also learn about themselves, their interests, values, character traits and skills. This enhanced self-awareness helps equip them to be able to make critical college and career decisions in high school and beyond.

Whether they are building a robot, filming a movie or creating a website, campers employ science, technol-ogy, engineering and math concepts and learn critical thinking and problem solving skills — all skills that will be required in future careers. Campers in every camp collaborate and work in teams, which develop their com-munication and interpersonal skills. As they participate in new experiences, they find out what they enjoy and find interesting.

CVCC will host Summer Career Camps in June for students who will be entering grades 5 to 10. For a complete list of camps offered or to register, visit www.cvccworks.edu/CAREERCAMPS.aspx, or contact Nanci Coleman at [email protected] or 440.838.8851. Online registration with payment by credit card is avail-able beginning February 9th.

Attorneys as Peacemakers

From the ProFeSSionaLS l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l

Laurie Malone

by Laurie Malone, Attorney and Mediator

Yes, that’s right, attorneys can be peacemakers. That may not be how you think of attorneys, but when an attorney like me wants to help clients in a constructive manner, we can bring peace to our clients’ lives, while obtaining the results the cli-ents think are fair. This is particularly important when people are dealing with divorce.

When a peacemaker at torney works with the family, he or she does not attack or make things ugly. The peacemaker attorney advocates and protects their clients interests in a productive manner.

Many peacemaker a t to rneys choose to become mediators or collaborative divorce at-torneys. With these options, relationships are strengthened. Parents are able to parent more effectively, and they have stronger relationships with their children, as well as with each other.

If you are contemplating divorce, think about how you want your life to be five years from now. If you want to be arguing with your ex, arguing your case in court will enhance the possibilities of that happening. If you want to be happy, financially secure, and at peace, consider retaining a peacemaker attorney; and consider the options of mediation or collaborative divorce.

As a peacemaker attorney, I am able to help my clients achieve the best results possible, and that’s why they are able to move on with the lives in a positive way. Contact me, and I will help you figure out what’s best for you..
